  1. I snapped this photo about a month ago of our family cabin my dad and his carpenter buddy built circa 1965. The owners weren’t there, so this is the best shot I could get. It’s on a hill/cliff overlooking a lake in South Dakota. It has a deck and big picture windows on the two sides overlooking the lake. It also had a 60s style free-standing fireplace in the middle of the living room that appears to no longer exist. Imagine Dean Martin walking in stirring a martini.04-D2-F615-4624-489-C-92-D2-CC525-E99-B4-E6.jpg
My dad purchased the lot for cash from a friend who was a local mayor. It bordered a SD Game, Fish & Parks wildlife refuge, but my dad - not wanting to pay for a proper survey - relied of the mayor’s recollection of the property line.  My dad sold it to his carpenter friend when we moved to San Antonio in 1974, and the bank-ordered survey showed that it encroached on the GFP land. Oops! My dad had to pay to remove a nicely terraced grass patio on the downhill side that had a wall and crescent fire pit and grill made with huge sandstone rocks that he scavenged from God knows where.
That refuge along the shoreline was like heaven for me as a kid. I had it to myself to fish and (illegally) hunt frogs that I would use as bait (or sell to a bait shop for 10 cents until I found out that the bastards sold them for over a dollar).

    Great looking cabin.
Some of those MCM Preway and Malm fireplaces can go for a few thousand bucks.

  2. My dad made something he called “dad sandwiches” which was just American cheese slices, sliced hot dogs, put on top of white bread and slid under a broiler. Not bad at all.

We did one like that we called Burnt Weenie Sandwich.

Slice the weenies and fold them open
In the folds insert slivers of cheese and chopped onions

    Add Worcestershire Sauce and Tabasco

Broil until the edges are burnt and crispy and the cheese is melted. Make a sandwich with available bread with Mustard.

I’m a modern architecture fan so the FW Modern may be my favorite in D/FW. Love this Tadeo Ando building.
    Also love The Nasher.
Underrated is The Crow Museum of Asian art across from the Nasher.

My highlight was a Wassily Kandinsky exhibit at The Guggenheim.

  4. Lemons are one of those things I never let myself run out of. I always have to have on hand onions, lemons, limes, garlic, and olive oil. With those, you can make a meal out of damn near anything else you have on hand.

Oh, also, underage escorts. I make sure I never run out of those, either. That’s important.

Tried to find a lime in Frisco when a Jimmy Buffett concert was down the street. No luck.
  5. LMAO.  I try to like Blind Faith because I'm a huge fan of Steve Winwood, but I hate Ginger Baker and am ambivalent to Eric Clapton.

Not a big fan of either Winwood or Clapton solo stuff.

Seen both and in my experience you are much more likely to get laid if you escort a lady to a Winwood show.

  6. You have the right plan for a Gatlinburg / Pigeon Forge trip. Day or two of hiking and seeing Cades Cove and a day or two of doing stuff that kids have fun with.

Pretty much what we did. Cabin outside Gatlinburg and one day Gatlinburg/Pigeon Cove. No desire to go back there. Rest of the time exploring The Smokies. Enjoyed that time. Cades Cove was just beautiful.

  7. I just started Sons of Sam. Now that's the New York where I grew up - filthy and crime ridden - not the shiney yuppie playground people think of today.

Finished it last night. Interesting, but it’s more about the journalist Maury Terry than Berkowitz.
