  1. Thomas, Flores, Belyeu, Powell, Galvan, Schuessler, Whitehead, Grubbs. All dudes playing as well or better than ever.

Brown, Jack and LBJ (one real bad start) I suppose are the regressions.

Freshmen that we can’t say they regressed. Gasparino, Kennedy. Borba and Farmer you can’t tell because they haven’t played much.

Witt and Shaw have jacked up arms.

Then the rest are largely just some guys that fit certain roles.

Maybe Hornsby is on it. They’re just losers.

  2. I think it may be time to accept the fact that this isn't all Pierce.  We have players with a lot of talent who have no balls.  They dont crave coming in with the sacs juiced...they are terrified of it.  This staff is gutless, save a few players and there is no way to teach someone how not to be a gutless pussy.  Throwing 95 doesn't change who you are internally.  You will cower and fail to performs when the chips are down.

It’s not all Pierce. It’s not a lack of talent. It’s not that our pitching is terrible or that we can’t hit.

LBJ was terrible tonight. But he’s the same guy that went into Miami and shut them down last year. Did he go from balls of steel to gutless? I’m not sure what it is.

There’s a lot of theories thrown out here that there are reasons to question the accuracy of those theories. That doesn’t mean there is not some truth there either.

The whole Witt situation brings up a number of questions. It wouldn’t surprise me if it had a significant impact on the entire team. From energy to confidence to strategy to roster composition.

You can’t really point to one thing with this team. Tuesdays hitting was surprising. LBJs performance tonight was surprising. So the next disappointment will probably be something else.

  3. Witt has hurt Texas baseball over the last going on now 3 seasons more than he has helped Texas baseball. Pretty much just a wasted roster spot, that being said I don’t blame Pierce for keeping him and respect the hell out of Witt for trying to give Texas whatever he had left in the tank. Unfortunately not every story has a happy ending

As it turns this is true. I don’t recall reading anything indicating leading into the season that his arm was shot. I’d assume that all parties were operating based on available medical information. And the tone was that the fans were happy to have him back. Not for what we got but what we’d reasonably hoped he could provide.

  4. The teams upside depended on an 0-1 pitcher who gave an occasional inning or two at a 5.8 ERA clip? Okay.

So you’re saying losing a guy that has performed at a somewhat high level, performed well at the CWS, that MLB teams viewed as a high level prospect doesn’t have the potential to take this team a step higher? Okay.
  5. The concept of being "more about Texas than a coach" should be an absolute given. I didn't even realize that there was a scenario in which the opposite could be the case.

Yes, it should be a given. But on these boards, I’m never certain.

Suppose I said that as I’d be considered pro-DP. I see positives with him but it’s as much pro-Texas as anything. I’m almost always pro player so I’ll be positive on that front even though my opinions/views have no impact on the actual season.

Mix in a little homerism and we’re finishing strong. As annoying as that hope may be to some. Not the “finishing strong” but my optimism for the finish.
  6. Come on. We all know baseball isn’t linear like that. There are going to be years the ball doesn’t bounce your way and it’s Michigan, not exactly a powerhouse. Bakich is a top 10 coach. Him, Link Jarrett at FSU and Rob Vaughn at Bama are right up there on my list.
There is no slam dunk. No Augie out there waiting to be poached. Jay Johnson and Tim Corbin aren’t coming here. Just like with most hiring processes, you have to look heavily at traits and what translates well to a place like Texas.

Are you saying those statements are false?

My comment was just stirring the pot. Honestly I have no idea who would be the top 5/10 coaches. They’ll all have flaws. And it would be like Sark - right place, right time as to which guy would be best.

I don’t give up on the season until it’s over. That’s where I am. I see the upside to this team although that takes a hit with the Witt news. I’m more a DP fan than ever just cause all the shit talkin but that’s my mentality - right or wrong. But I’m more about Texas succeeding than any coach. I’ll worry about next year after this year.
  7. We all fucking hope so but at this point they’re all 1 melt down inning away from a massive demotion. We don’t have anyone with “stuff” good enough to overcome defensive miscues and weak ass run support so they’re all walking right ropes. Ace has been sharp as hell for 2 weeks though

Outside of the first weekend, we’ve been competitive save a blow up or two. We have enough parts on the mound to compete. We’ve yet to see LBJs best. I’m still confident in Witt being able to do some things.

Baylor lacks offensive firepower so I wouldn’t put much stock into today. But there may be something to hard throwing righty then sod tossing lefty then a righty. Very different arm types for the opponent to prepare for.

  8. Schuessler has been swinging it well enough to where he should be DH'ing (probably permanently now that Galvan is back) when he isn't catching.

Garret G finished the season like 6-39. Silas 9-45.

They played a lot of catcher. When they didn’t, they DHd a lot. Seemed as though GGs defense got shittier as the season progressed too.

A break, even from DHing, is reasonable for the most taxing physically and mentally position on the field.

Even in the short term, Kimbles defense was significantly better when he got a break.

It’s a little different with Galvan there (or maybe his defense is not there). Oddly enough, you’re not advocating Kimble at C today even though Galvan’s performance at the plate last night was probably the worst of the season.

You gotta work your bench. You will likely need them.
  9. That scheduling makes sense. There’s too many games for anyone to track in their head. Then you look up and see FSU is undefeated and think wow. Nevermind their schedule to date is poor. We could have easily scheduled a half dozen more wins.

Georgia, Kentucky haven’t played much but the perception is positive.

It’d be interesting to see a midweek games only RPI. Chances are you won’t bludgeon A&M or Sam Houston or Texas State. Pitching depth can be tested mid-week in those type games but ICW and Houston Christian it does not matter because your scoring double digits and maybe high double digits.

  10. Just to get a little different discussion out there. I’ll attempt to turn it into a little more college and less Texas sucks.

    FSU is #1 in RPI. 4-0 in quadrant 1. No games in Q2. 8-0 in Q3. 7-0 in Q4.

    Baylor is 0-8 in Q1. 4-4 in Q2. 0-1 in Q3. 4-0 in Q4.

OU is #4 in RPI with a 14-7 record. Only 1 Q4 game. UCF is #11 with a 2-5 conference record. Only 2 Q4 games. Then you have TCU with their 2-5 conference record. TCU is undefeated in non-conference but is 9-0 in Q4 games.

Quick count had 5 SEC with 9 or more Q4 games. The Big 12 had Tech and WVU with 9 or more.

Texas is #54. Only 2 Q4 games. OU is the only team with 1 Q4 game in the top 54. There are only 3 others with 2 Q4 games. Only 5 others with less than 5 Q4 games.

The Big 12 is 3rd in RPI and currently closer to 2nd (ACC) than 4th (PAC). The Big 12 isn’t weak but some do not play the Q4 teams that other conferences have loaded up on.
