1. Yeah gonna go ahead and disagree there. He’s got a good swing for Adam Dunn. He needs to flatten that shit out and go down and through the ball.

I’m speaking more in the sense of natural and fluid that lefties often have. To go along with the launch angle. Until DP tells me personally I believe he values the extra power. I’d say his swing is better than his discipline and approach at this point. But I’ll save my arguing for other points.
2. Ultimately going to agree to disagree here. Like Hobbes has already said, reasonable level isn’t what I’d describe O’Dowd as. Heck, I hope your last little paragraph isn’t true because O’Dowd would more than likely not fit Pierce’s definition of a capable hitter. I’m looking at O’Dowd holistically and not what he’s done against poor pitching the last couple of weekends. Again he’s had some nice, timely AB’s but then he’s also looked like a complete buffoon at the plate. Guessing will only get you so far and it never adds up to consistency. I’m not necessarily saying we have to drop him for the rest of season. I just would like to see a young kid with potential get a handful of games in a row against a soft part of the schedule to see what he’s got. Already we’ve seen Dee gives us more range, albeit with some freshmen wtf moments but that’s to expected and with more reps we could see that issue fade. At the plate it’s still up in the air imo. Dee has shown competitiveness at the plate and maybe that translates into more hits. I’d like to find out. If not then you know exactly what O’Dowd brings and Pierce can roll with the engagement/rotating between the two.

Define reasonable. Baseball is a numbers game so it shouldn’t be difficult.

A bit of randomness so I looked up 2021 Vandy. The top 8 Vandy hitters in terms of ABs from that season. Jacks 2023 season would have ranked 4th in average, 5th in slugging. Same for Mississippi State that year. 2021 Texas puts him 5th and 4th. All 3 teams were quite good.

Perfect Game had Jack O as the 96th ranked player. Vandy brought him on. He’s got a good swing so it shouldn’t be a surprise that DP has hopes for him. He certainly needs to be more disciplined but DP also values pop so aggression may be rewarded.

3. The thing with Dee is he has a ton of potential and could be a good player for us later in the year but the only way that can happen is if he gets plenty of reps. We know what O’Dowd brings to the table. Pedestrian defense and a very hot or cold bat. I mean at times it’s not even game to game but rather AB to AB. He could pull a double down the line and next AB look completely lost against the same pitcher.

Baseball players for over a century have run hot and cold. Even the very best. My point is that it does not have to be all or nothing. You don’t want Jack hitting.200, but you don’t want Kennedy hitting like Flores last year either. If you keep them both engaged, then you have an opportunity for them both to be productive. And we’re not playing for next year so you’re advocating dropping a guy that’s produced to a reasonable level for a full season and some in the postseason for what you hope might happen with a guy that’s never done it.

Like him or not Pierce has a baseline understanding of what a capable hitter looks like. We don’t have guys playing that don’t meet a certain minimum.

4. Something without O’Dowd. I think a closing of Gasparino and Dee is the best we can hope for.

Alright.

Guess a dude that hit around .300 last post season with some pop should not see the field. Got it.

I’m not sure Gasparino stays down there but who knows.

5. My point is more specific to our current team. The end of our lineup is fucking trash often times (looking at you O’Dowd). I’d rather see PP get more chances early in games with an extra runner on than counting on end of game situations.
I really like the Schuessler suggestion Hookem2147 said. That would be a great fit in that spot.

What does your ideal bottom of the order look like?
6. Farmer was 1-2 with a walk last night.  Got a solid hit last night his first at bat and played some solid left field.  He didn't drop any Porter Brown type balls.    Hopefully he can continue more of the same with more at bats.

Yeah not a knock on Farmer but more in relation to his production to date. Difficult to find consistency with sporadic play particularly at the plate.

DP hasn’t been a huge rotation guy so we’ll see if that changes a bit.

7. Marlin's best comp would probably have been Mart in how they should have performed.

Yeah maybe. Marlin was a classification or maybe two above Mart, but they did have similar type guys. Not sure when Marlin dropped down. We’re talking a span of 30 years or so in my mind so things are a bit distorted.
8. It's still insane how slow Atlanta made them look that year.

I can’t speak to that specifically.

If I had to label a program as underachieving through the years, Marlin would probably rank fairly high. Course part of my experience with that is from years ago. The smaller schools around Waco produce some good athletes.
9. Florida: took 2 of 3 from undefeated aggy,  2/3 from Miami
Texas: lost 2 of 3 to UW.... at home

They have a losing record against St John’s, Stetson, Jacksonville and UCF.

10. Where the haters at now? Scraped by 2 of the nastier teams in the country the last 2 games. Bet you mother fuckers didn’t see that coming.

Let’s look at it on a percentage basis. We outscored UW 33% and AF 20%. Is that really scraping by?

Pretty sure we all take that return on our investment portfolio for a days work.
11. It’s a midweek game in a week with 5 games. Brown and Belyeu got a rest. Farmer hasn’t shown any better. You would shit yourself if Jack was in the 2 hole. You drop Powell a spot. Add you a little speed at the top of the order and there you have your lineup.

12. Somebody else made the assessment my response was if you really believe that someone is much better than the starter than why would you leave spring practice having the better player think he is a backup. Read the post I responded too before making a comment that does not apply to the context of the conversation.

My initial comment wasn’t specific to you and only you but was in fact a response to the context of that conversation and not simply your post. I simply did not requote what you quoted. Apologies.

13. I rather they give the better projected starter the spring reps because the other side of the coin is that we lose a great player to the portal because the better player knows he should have overtaken the player in front of him on the depth chart. Just like losing coaches is a good thing losing players because they lost their starting position will be a good thing.  It will hurt depth but I rather not risk the better player.

Its thoughts like these that crack me up yet have me shaking my head.

First, I’d assume the spring will get lots of reps to lots of guys. I’m pretty certain we’ve read references that Flood will move guys around for those reps too.

Then we’re talking about a better projected starter. Based on what? Are we talking about Neto and/or Hudson that have never proven they are better in game? And they’re only one year apart, right? Here’s a thought - how about the incumbent up their level of play.

It’s also entirely possible the staff values a bit more reliability in pass protection at that spot since that’s where Campbell struggles. We’re playing to win so playing time will be made with that in mind whether that looks like you think it should or not.
14. ERA is 4.34 this year compared to 4.18 last year. No idea why I referred to the hits allowed increase as small. I just saw the WHIPs were almost identical and it made sense since we had decreased our walk rate but our hits allowed rate had increased.
I don't really have a strong preference for how a college baseball offense needs to operate. I do think with the wildness and inconsistencies on the mound at this level, it is smart to force pitchers and teams to prove they can throw the ball in the zone. But if you can hit the ball out of the ballpark, you can score runs in bunches, making life easier. Our 2022 offense walked 4.62 times per game, so less than last year. Not even sure what conclusions to draw from that other than it's an interesting data point and discussion.

That’s where hitting hasn’t changed. Make the pitcher bring it to you as the hitter. If you can make that happen, your success rate should go up. Obviously the reverse is true for a pitcher.

From what I’ve seen this far, it feels like last year our pitchers got ahead then struggled to finish batters. This year a bit more of getting behind.

Lots of runs scored in the SEC this weekend. Less so it seemed in the Big 12. May need to switch up philosophy based on opponent.
