My first Jarmusch movie and I’ve loved him ever since. His movies aren’t always great but I always enjoy them.

I was sophomore at Austin High but a lot my friends had graduated and were freshmen at Texas. We all went to see it at the Dobie one night and as the “little kid” in the group, they all convinced me it was real. In my head I knew they were full of shit, but when the movie started I got completely immersed. I was just old enough to enjoy it but young enough to still be sucked in.

CTJ is right though, people who didn’t see it in the theater won’t understand the effect it had on people. In fact, with the ubiquity of found footage and prevalence of spoilers on the internet, I don’t think any movie will be able to catch people the way the BWP did ever again.

Maybe I was jaded having worked in the motion picture industry, but Blair Witch Project was a bore.  Woody Allen's Shadows and Fog was too.  Moving a film camera to create a sense of unease isn't special and requires no talent.  It's like getting sea sick.  The Blair Witch Project only provided interest in the final scene, which despite the many years I won't spoiler.  The Haunting is far scarier taking the opposite effect of the camera remaining on a single atmospheric shot and allowing the viewer's imagination to fill in the gaps.

Where was the on campus movie theater and what was it called? I never went there sober but I vaguely remember watching Eraserhead and Basket Case there.

I was a student from 1978-82.  There was the theatre in the student union, above the rec center.  Batts Hall used to show movies on weekends, as did Jester Auditorium semi-regularly.  Dobie during that period was two screens, larger than the screen after the renovation.  Even rarer was the movie screened in the Burdine Auditorium.  The Varsity Theatre was at 24th & Guadalupe, which later and sadder became a Tower Records.  On the Drag down between Wallace's Book Store and Quackenbush's (reference point, Quackenbush's wasn't there then) was the Texas Theatre, which showed porn films.

I fully expect the defense to be elite and have never said otherwise. I opted for brevity in my post above but I can go into detail.

I don’t think we’ll force as many turnovers. 22 INTs last year was the most we’ve had in 15 years (side note: 25 in 14 games in 2009 is absurd). We had 16 twice since then with a typical number being 10-15 (more games now means a slight uptick in expected number of course). Taaffe is the only DB that has shown similar to instincts to Barron and Mukuba, which can be developed but is also something that will often show immediately in the elite guys (like Barron in 2022).

Beyond our personnel, this defense could also be worse statistically without an actual drop in quality due to the step up in QB play we’re likely to see this year. And I don’t mean that to take away anything from last year’s defense. They were awesome. I can’t stress enough that this is not a ‘they ain’t played nobody’ post. We just might not get the same gifts from Sayin and Lagway that we got from literal walk-ons a year ago.

Of course there are reasons for optimism. Atticus mentioned McDonald and Williams. I really like both of them. Williams particularly seems like a guy that creates turnovers, including fumbles. I still remember Sark talking him up as a future first rounder in his ‘23 signing day press conference and he’s been great when he’s played. I’d add Hill and Lefau in there as well. Jaylan Ford led the team in INTs in 2022 because he was so good at pass drops. Hill and Lefau had 1 each last year and could easily combine for a couple more due to continued improvements in drops (Hill) and increased playing time (Lefau).

Point is, we’re going to develop guys and have an awesome defense but I’m expecting the INT number to drop a bit towards the 1/game number, which is still good.

And to the other end of the turnover and field position discussion, our defense stands to benefit from fewer short fields due to our own turnovers, missed field goals, and blocked/fake punts. It was pretty incredible how well the defense held up when put into bad situations last year.

We'll force more turnover because QBs are going to be getting rid of the ball before the play calls for it.  And because continued pressure and hits will force fumbles from said QBs.  Our DTs are going to be better than last year.  We don't have any questionable talents like we did going into last year.  Alex January is going to be better (before he's through) than Collins, Broughton and anyone not named Sweat and Murphy.  And I'm not positive on that.  I shit you not, we're going to terrify offenses this season.   The only game I think we might lose is at tOSU, just because it's the first game.  And we probably win that one.  And then Katie bar the door.

  4. People underestimated pretty much everything sans kickoff returns about Golden last year.  And to the Whittington work ethic and leadership, OTF has said that Moore is the first one at practice and the last to leave.  All I'm saying is, let's see.  Jackson seems pretty good at WR development.

Definitely, but don’t undersell how much it will help to have QB run option, in terms of opening up holes for our backs. There will be added hesitation on every handoff to make sure Arch isn’t about to do a 70 yard dash.

I don't think run blocking is the worry.

  6. Things have changed somewhat on the Arkie end.  Gone are the days of Hillbilly U.  They actively recruit good students now.  I was there as a 10 year-old in '69 and witness to horrors in addition to being accosted by a grown ass man who cussed me out.  That never happened at Kyle Field (the aggies were nice to kids) or even Jones Stadium.  But you're correct that Arkie was second in rivalry behind OU.  Hell, OU fans at the fair were nicer to me than fucking Arkies were.  I just don't think the new generation of Hogs feels the same hatred.

  7. You would think after all these years of SEC bagmen and their "Gentlemen's Agreement" (not to be confused with that imaginary covenant that aggies whine about) Georgia fans would have some insight or at least a pragmatic understanding of things, but apparently not.  I've never known or met a Georgia fan, unless you count the members of the B52s, whom I got to party with back around 1982.  None of them seemed interested in sports.

A good rule of thumb for qb recruits is that you are most likely to only sign an elite one every other year.  It will be 2028 for us because of Bell.  I think Sark talked to Phillip and they concluded our depth chart was a non-starter.

Gerry and Bobby have been saying for a while that they didn't think Philip Rivers would send his kid to a crowded qb room.
