It's not really a knock on ex-military. It's a knock on ex-military that go on to be cops. I'm sure there are tons of ex-military who are completely done with anything miltary/paramilitary when they complete their service. It's the ones that want to go on to what they believe is a paramilitary organization that cause all the trouble. And, of course, they don't have to be ex-military to be that kind of aggro-psycho. The psychological testing employed by PDs would seem to be working.
FIFY. Because...
QuoteCan a person actually be “too smart” to be a cop in America?
A federal court’s decision back in 2000 suggests that, yes, you actually can be.
Robert Jordan, a 49-year-old college graduate, scored a 33 on an intelligence test he took as part of the application process to become a police officer in the town of New London, Connecticut. The score meant Jordan had an IQ of 125.
The average score for police officers was a 21-22, or an IQ of 104. New London would only interview candidates who scored between 20 and 27.
Jordan sued the city alleging discrimination, but the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York upheld that it wasn’t discrimination. “Why?” you might ask. Because New London Police Department applied the same standard to everyone who applied to be a cop there.
And the theory behind it?
“Those who scored too high could get bored with police work and leave soon after undergoing costly training,” ABC News reported back then. While at least acknowledging the basic fact that such a policy might be “unwise,” the court deemed it had a “rational basis” because it was put in place to lower cop turnover.
The police department went on to continue automatically disqualifying anyone whose IQ was “too high.” Jordan went on to become a prison guard instead.
And there you have it.

Yeah....that's an argument angle that fucking pisses me off to no end. So, let's be clear, we can't sound the alarm till we actually BUILD gas chambers? Naah, they'll move the goalposts again....quit you're bitching until we're actually USING the gas chambers....then move the goalposts again....we're only using the gas chambers to protect us from really bad hombres.....
We used to live in shame of just what we did regarding Japanese Internment. Now, we've lost even that sense of shame.
Fuck these fuckers. For decades, we said "never again." And now, we're running headlong along the path of "again." Fuck them. Not on my watch, not in my name.

What evidence? He's aware - the US simply wants it both ways.
Same with Trump and arms to Ukraine. We have to be Putin's bitch, but a piddly $250 million arms sale to Ukraine (which does effectively nothing to shift any balance of power) let's us tout some regional bonafides. That, and Trump probably has no idea we're even doing the arms deal.

Qanon is one of the more disturbing political movements I’ve seen. It’s has the grift level of Scientology and the ideology of a borderline terrorist organization.
The Qanon utopia is a single party Trump controlled fascist government where dissenters/political enemies are arrested and executed via military tribunals. Lots of ancient anti-Semitic tropes run through the Qanon conspiracy theory too. (Like the pedovore cabal of globalists that run an underground sex trafficking ring.)
Not exactly your local Rotary club or fraternal organization.
But simpering quislings like @TahoeHorn will still fetch the donuts for them.

well I disagree with the assertion that he "has a point" (he doesn't)
Well, let me modify what I said, because that's fair -- the point he's making is one that does need to be stated. It's not a good one for HIM, but we do need to think about how we approach forgiveness and redemption. In the social media age, we're really good at being all torch and pitchfork-y, not so good at being thoughtful and allowing for the fact that everyone has something shameful in their past.
But also understand that the label of "shameful" covers a LOT of ground....and some shameful stuff is more redeemable than others.

And this. He has given us no indication of how he thinks of the place that minorities and women have in the world today. "I'm sorry I said the N-word when I was a kid" sure as hell doesn't equal "I'm sorry I ever talked about or thought of black people in that way."

It's amazing how kindly Kashuv is being treated by basically everyone. People are trying to play it off like he was just typing the n-word, but... no, that's not all!
- He said he was going to make a map of the high school in CS:GO for "practice"
- He typed "kill all fucking Jews"In addition to all the n-word stuff and being a repugnant little misogynist shit
And that's just what we know.
And no, he doesn't have a point. Not even a little bit. Redemption and forgiveness are not Harvard's to give in this case, it is nothing but a privileged little shit crying because his privilege wasn't eternally maintained.
Agreed.
This isn't a case where a smartass kid being edgy dropped an N-bomb or two. What he wrote is profoundly disturbing in its entire theme, and what it says about how he processes and looks at the entire world around him. Yeah, people change....but when the issue is that you are a sociopath, a written apology ain't evidence of shit. A decade or better of living your life right shows the truth.
What do y'all wanna bet that within the next two years, private messages etc. from him leak that reveal that he still thinks of others in such offensive and sociopathic ways?

If Trump gets the GOP Senate to ratify a war in the MidEast, there should be public hangings. No, tarring, feathering, then public hangings.
This would be mass murder.
I'm not shy about using military force to smash any actual threat to the US. I don't say the above from a naive world view.
I hate to believe that the electorate would support such a criminal endeavor. Hating to believe it doesn't meant I won't believe it when it happens.
He will. There won't be.
But for the first time in my life, I will absolutely take to the streets to be visible in protest. This would be a completely unnecessary war entirely of our own making.

Do y'all think that when Yang was about the close the deal with a ladyfriend, he ever busted out with "so, I presume you're here for the Yangbang?" Because...ummm...I totally would have. Because I have poor impulse control.

I've known of a handful of moms that have done it, and I can't get that, either. Just doesn't compute.
Shit, I've said before that I think the saddest place in the world is the airport late on a Sunday afternoon. It's full of divorced dads, putting their kids on a plane back home to mom after their custodial weekend with dad. That very sight is one of the reasons that no matter how challenging things got with me and the missus from time to time, I did all I could to fight off divorce. I didn't want to say goodbye to my kids on a Sunday afternoon.
But for some folks, that's not as much of an issue. I don't get it, but that doesn't make it any less true. For those of you who experienced that....shit, I'm sorry. To go all Good Will Hunting, you know it's not your fault. All you can do is to try to be a good man. Be a good father. And, if the opportunity is right, to forgive. You gotta walk your own path, but experience tells me it's best walked looking forward, not backwards. In any case, I sure do wish you all peace.

Who would have thought that calling your black classmates the N word, telling other students you want them to fuck your ass, saying you want to kill all the jews, and making comments about turning your school into a csgo map so you can "practice" would cause a university to second guess their decision to let you attend?
On one hand, Kashuv DOES have a point. I am concerned about our trend to not allow for any forgiveness, growth, etc., particularly with respect to things said and done when young. There was no internet or social media when I was that age, but I assure you, I said and did stuff - being an asinine 14-16 yr old boy - that wouldn't play well. But, that said.....none of it was super-shitty super-racist shit like Kashuv spewed.
So, maybe the takeaway should be yes, we need to allow for forgiveness and growth....but some things said and done demonstrate such a deep defect in one's character that we can't credibly believe you've "grown past that." Demonstrate that you're a mouthy kid? Sure, you can grow past that -- most folks do. Demonstrate that you're a repeatedly, consistent racist shitbag? Yeah, not so much.

Tried to hit Hut's today. Has a paper posted on the door that said they were closed today, need to take a day to restock and regroup, thanks for the outpouring of support.
So, we went and got Whataburger instead, on our "memorial tour of screwed Texas burger places."

Yeah, that's the middle of the paper at the gun range. That's dead-on. And, umm, looks like whatever his body armor was....it wasn't enough to stop whatever the Feds were shooting.

This is mostly pure speculation, but it's not uncommon for Fed Sniper teams to use SoCom equipment.
If so, they would be using a FN 17 also know as SCAR heavy. A 308 caliber carbine that has been proven very reliable out to 500 yards and beyond.
Using the appropriate suppressor unit, at x distance you wouldn't even hear the rapport nor see the flash until threat was stopped.
Could have also been a Barrett 50 but those are typically for over 500 and only a rare few train with those rifles. You would have heard it.
2 minutes ago, HouTex said:You can see the puffs of smoke in the bottom left of the video. They seem to have engaged him from just down (west?) the same block. I'm surprised he didn't drop like a sack of potatoes.
Yeah, lots to figure out there. I've seen the US Marshals at many a Federal courthouse. They have sidearms. I've never seen anyone -- even in a guard booth or whatnot -- with a long gun. That said, there are clearly shots coming from the left (seeing the impacts on the courthouse, although man, those shots are WAY WIDE of the target). So, I'm not even sure if the shots that got him were from shooters inside the courthouse or shooters outside of the courthouse, stationed to the left.
Whatever the case.....the reaction time is incredible. From the beginning of the incident to the end is maybe a minute?

I like dumbasses who spend a lotta time and money ordering stuff from "TACTICALBADASS.COM," but no time or money learning how to shoot or actually scoping out their target. I like those dumbasses a lot. Because they get taken out without doing any damage.

My daughter got recruited heavily by Oberlin. This is a girl who recently told me "there's no way in my lifetime I'll ever vote for a Republican." When I asked her a coupla years ago if she was considering Oberlin, she said "nope, everyone I know who went there is SUPER liberal, and a pain in the ass to be around."
Not commenting on the judgment here -- seems a stretch to hold the institution specifically liable (the individuals involved, absolutely). I'd need to see specific evidence and briefing, but at first glance, I wouldn't be shocked to see that part of it overturned on appeal. Will be interesting to read and watch at some point.

I'd like to know what the Feds were shooting, because I can't even see them in the video -- they hit him from some distance. Nice work.
