There's been a bit of chatter on social media lately about this look. I fuckin HATED these jerseys and can't believe the incredibly outsized positive reception for this look in the last week since LMJ tweeted at Correa about throwback unis.

    What says the surl?

I like them but concede is it primarily sentimental as a 10-15 year old playing little league and buying every baseball card I could find during those days. I hate the red/pinstripes. My favorite are the rainbows on the shoulder from the late 80s/early nineties.

I drove it again today and couldn't remember, but one little stretch of Congress Avenue had a lane leftover after the two lane closures for bike lanes.  And for one block, there's a turn-lane now.  But it's going to be a complete cluster-fuck from the Capitol all the way down to Riverside Drive.  Just two lanes now in each direction, a car turning left will now effectively backup morning north-bound/afternoon south-bound traffic for 2-3 light cycles at a time.

They should have taken one lane (probably southbound) and made it a two-lane bikeway.  I think you can probably have two mountain bikes or scooters pass each other safely with a 10' wide lane).  Repainted the whole thing then to have two soutbound, two northbound, and one dedicated turn lane the length of Congress from 12th to Riverside (bridge aside).  Bikes can easily turn at E/W streets to get over to the other side if need be.  But that way you'd at least not have the inevitable clustercuss when somebody decides to turn left 6 months from now when downtown is back to being all abuzz with activity.

Or you know, if the goal is to get fewer people to drive their cars downtown, rip out one side of the diagonal parking spaces on one side of the street and turn that into the 2-way bike lane.  The length of that road has maybe...what?........80 parking spaces on either side?  We just fucked over the commute of everybody that works/lives/plays downtown for 80 cars and 80 cyclists?  Great job.  Congress Avenue wasn't the most effective use of space and there are great ways to reduce congestion on it.  But you literally took the two worst ideas on how to go about that.  Leave antiquated parking in place and completely fuck up the opportunity to alleviate turn congestion while still being able to accomodate bikes safely.

When we're back to peak work/peak festivals/peak UT/peak etc.  Can you imagine pulling out of one of those parking spaces while people are trying to get around the guy taking a left and you're both competing to squeeze into that one operable lane?  We should make Adler come stand in those lanes each day and attempt to direct traffic while we shit on his head.

As soon as they put up those cones because "COVID," I knew they would never come down. It's the very definition of "don't let a good crisis go to waste."

You are dead on about how f*cked this will be under normal traffic conditions. Cars turning left, cars turning right held up by pedestrian traffic, rideshares that will stop on Congress, etc will all destroy traffic flow and are things that happen constantly.

I truly do not understand how anyone can defend, much less support, the CoA government. Mind boggling they continue to be overwhelmingly elected.

  3. I'm kicking around the idea of a nice (~$5k) watch. Right now I have a Hamilton Pan Europ.

I have had my eye on a Zenith El Primero (38mm 1969 version), which I can get under $6000. I like that it's a chronograph with some history and it works in a casual or suit environment. I would get it on a SS bracelet and buy a couple different leather straps for different looks.

Does anyone have any experience with an El Primero? It is reliable enough to handle the abuse of a daily wearer? Does it have any chance of holding its value?

I also like the Rolex GMT II but at $10k+ they are too spendy for me.

  4. Good point on LC. I am under 40 so I pay a different rate. I have the ONE membership which gives me access to the club corp network nationwide. My basic dues are around $450/mo and I joined a couple years ago for $1500 initiation. Message me if you want more info on Lost Creek.

In my experience, Great Hills keeps their greens in nice shape and they have some good golfers out there.

If you are willing to drive to Twin Creeks, look at UT Golf Club. It's the same distance, if not a little closer.

Onion Creek is semi-private so it's not apples to apples comparison and the location is less than ideal.

Another factor could be whether you want to walk or ride. Great Hills has a lot of elevation change and some tee boxes are a hike from the previous green.

What about Austin Golf Club and ACC?  I know, I know...if you have to ask...

    Why not both?

Of those options, I would join Great Hills. The member I play with there said their initiation is going up to $20k due to the new clubhouse they're building. I'm a member of Lost Creek (and live in the neighborhood). It's super cheap to join (<$2k I think) and we use it for tennis, golf and the pool several days a week. In my experience, prioritize location and convenience then get the best option that works with your budget.

How much would you put on the business card? Spark card seems like a great if you put a lot of money. The $95 annual fee means that your first $5000 spent is basically breaking even on the annual fee and cash rewards. The sign up bonus of  $500 isn’t bad.

amex blue business card is similar with no annual fee, 2% cash back on the first $50k and then 1% after that. I don’t think there is a promo bonus.

It varies, low six figures on average. So a few thousand in cash back vs whatever the point equivalent is for that amount. I would rarely use some of the "perks" of the high fee cards like airport lounges. All of my work travel is domestic, mostly to Dallas and Houston.

  7. This is timely since I was looking for the other credit card rewards thread.

I need to get a business credit card. I currently use one of my personal cards for all my business purchases.

What should I get? The card I use for business expenses is a SWA visa and I already have companion pass. If I get another travel card, I want flexibility to use it for hotels or for airfare to destinations that SWA doesn’t go. Or I could also get a simple cash back card. Capital one spark offers a flat 2% cash back. My personal cards are 2% flat benefits, a fidelity card and capital one venture card.

    Thoughts?

    35. This all just feels like way too much way too soon, and I felt the market was overheated pre covid.

I think I’m going to roll a decent chunk of it over into Exxon for the dividend factor. Worth noting I work at a big 4 so I have to be careful of what I get into regarding audit independence, most etfs/mutual funds are permissible.

(Again, idk shit, just being semi conservative. I still have over half my Roth rolling along.)

I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure moving from a broadly diversified portfolio to a single stock is the opposite of being conservative.

  9. The pandemic has been pretty good for my golf game. Playing once a week on average, I've knocked a few strokes off my handicap and am playing consistently in the 80s lately.

I struggle with GIR and I think alignment may be a contributor. Sometimes I think I block it out to the right but my playing partners say I just aimed out there. I feel dumb typing this question, but does anyone have advice on proper aim? Spend time on the range with alignment sticks and get used to the look of the flag? I try picking a spot on my line in front of the ball with mixed results.

  10. I'm self employed and paying $820/mo for my wife, 1 year old and myself on a dog shit HSA plan with a $13.8k family deductible and OOP max (half that per individual). I was paying $1400/mo last year for "better" coverage on my wife's COBRA plan. Then they stiffed us on the hospital bill for our daughters birth.

I have regularly been denied coverage on medical bills, so now I go for the cheapest premium possible to protect against a catastrophic event and save for everything else out of pocket.

I have never had time to really practice my short game (or practice in general).  Now I am playing a lot more since I can't travel and trying to improve but the range and practice facility at my club is closed due to Covid.  Yeah, my putting is basically guessing.  Sometimes long, sometimes short.  No idea where its going.

If only you could practice putting inside your home on some type of a mat.

  12. Sorry everyone. I finally won tickets in the lottery this year, so this whole thing is probably my fault. Planned to go to the Monday practice round then spend a few days golfing and eating in Charleston. Now trying to decide if I want to still go to Charleston.

The driveability of the small displacement turbo fours is pretty amazing.  The numbers support it, but it's something to experience.  At least it was for me.

Agree. Regrettably, I left the fanatics community two weeks ago when I was given a strong offer for my 6MT e90 335i. Now I'm in a 2.0T Accord. It's not amazing, but it is better than I expected. It handles my commute well and I like having CarPlay and adaptive cruise. I'm in my mid 30s with a young kid, so I consider it a downpayment on a 911 or AMG in my 40s.

Alright... taking some clients to Scottsdale in a week.  What should we play monday?

    Troon North

    GrayHawk (specify Talon or Raptor)

    Boulders

    Other (please specify)

I've played all but boulders.  Quintero is too far away for me to have a monday meeting and then make an 11:30am tee time.  Not worried about price at all.  Clients have played all courses listed.  Please help.

I've only been to Scottsdale once, but I enjoyed We-Ko-Pa Saguaro more than the Troon course I played. I haven't played the others.

  15. Curious what folks budget for their Bandon trips. Is there a time of year that’s better than another? I want to do the trip in the next few years. I will bring the wife who also plays. My parents are in seattle in the summer so I’ve thought about dropping the kid off there and making a road trip out of it.

To make this relevant to 2020 golf, I played Friday, had a good back nine, then died afterwords from cedar. Haven’t left the house since. I hear it’s nice out though.
