  1. Interesting discussion especially with me still being drunk and all. That said, it all depends on what UT is willing to do. From a Pac-12 perspective, Cristobal is a solid choice - IF you're willing to go all SEC. Oregon gives no fucks and has long since decided to go down the SEC path of "I might stop with the dirty shit, if you catch me." Petersen likely hung it up at UW because that's not how he works.  UW and UO, maybe Utah (USC when they're good) are the only schools in the Pac-12 that a Big 12 or SEC fan would recognize as a college football game day if they visited. The other schools have good history and traditions but just aren't that into it, or are smaller schools like WSU.

Petersen would be a great fit at UT if he wanted to coach again - UW like UT is a serious academic institution and Petersen's style, both coaching and recruiting, is perfect for that sort of school. I'm just not sure he wants to - he's happy at UW as an associate AD and he teaches leadership courses at UW's business school. If he would take the job at UT, I'd root for him and you forever. He's what college football should be about - top APR scores, very good football, and kids set up to succeed when they leave the program. I'm just not sure he's in to what CFB really requires to be at the very top of the heap.

If you take Cristobal, you will succeed, and I'll be happy that UO (you also can't spell "c_cks_cker" without "UO") has to find another coach. I'm just not sure - to your credit - that that's what UT wants.

  2. So, I'm not from 'round here, but I root for the 'Horns too (or why else would I be here?). Plus I'm drunk.  At any rate, although I thought Texas should have gone for 2 at the end of regulation - having all the momentum - I did somewhat understand why Herman went for OT. That said, at the end of the second OT I was screaming at the TV "go for two!". It made absolutely no sense to me that when you have a chance to win right there you don't take it. You'd have to go for two after that anyway, so go with the momentum and FINISH THEM.  It just seemed to me that y'all were playing with house money at that point. Once he played to go to the 3rd OT I felt an impending sense of doom.

From an outsider's perspective it just seems that he has that binder that tells him what to do, but there's no understanding of the human side of what's actually taking place on the field.

Oh well, at least y'all are playing. We'll be there in 4 weeks. 😂 OU sucks, UO sucks, same thing. Hook 'em!

  3. Nice bit on Jack Trice on Gameday - thanks to Al and his Surly Cyclone brethren I knew the story, but it was nice to see the images and hear from some of the people that made the stadium renaming possible. I'm glad his story has now reached a wider audience.

Al, I hope that your day on the grain cart has a Cyclone win as part of it.

The pirate vs coach o is an underrated storyline for the first week back in the sec.

    Go bulldogs.

Pirate can't beat teams wearing purple and gold.

(Still should be fun - but would be even better to try and decipher a conversation between those two.)

There is some interesting info in here on what went into the P12 thinking.  Brings up some good points, but also finishes by saying that Bruin fans should just get used to the fact that UCLA will never prioritize football over academics or other institutional missions (primarily medical where Geffen alone has donated over $450 million over the last coupe of decades).  I guess there's pride ot be found elsewhere other than the football field.  But the football field would be nice too.

Good stuff, SB. Washington is in the same boat as the three California schools discussed, not only in regards to the UW medical center being a world leader, but as to how the university perceives itself and it's place in the world. The place will never be an SEC-level athletic program because we do not place importance on things the same way those schools do, much as Cal, UCLA, and Stanford (and, to a large extent, Texas as well). We're fortunate that we have an outstanding president who happens to be a sports fan and is popular both on the academic and the athletic side of things, but there was never any doubt which way we would end up going.  Even Coach Lake has been adamant about backing the conference's decision.

The UW hasn't played a home game in over 40 years where I wasn't in attendance. Like a lot of you, football season for us is when friends and family get together for tailgating and good old-fashioned hatred of our quacking compatriots to the south.  I'm pissed and at a loss as August turns into September and there's no football on our horizon here for the first time since 1891. Yet my faith is - and has to be - in the amazing medical professionals at UW Medicine and at the other top schools in the conference.

I hope we were wrong; that the three remaining conferences hold a successful and healthy season even if that will hurt my school and probably destroy the Washington States and Oregon States of the conference - because that will mean that y'all were able to keep your players, staffs, and their families safe. Godspeed to you.

  6. The logo and uniforms turned out really well. Wasn't my first choice for the name but it's grown on me. Clearly they will play in the Krakhouse (sorry Lemon Climate Pledge Arena) and we fans will be Krakheads.  Plus there'll be plenty of rum drinks, one would assume....

All in all, I'm just excited that we're finally getting an NHL team in what will be an amazing arena five minutes' walk from me. Release the giant squids!

Voted Ribeye, but I love some Brazilian picanha.

I voted other specifically to choose picanha. That's become our tailgate beef o' choice. A little coarse salt and some pepper and onto the grill. Eat it with molho da campanha (Brazilian "salsa" but with vinegar) and some farofa to soak up the juices. Damn. Muito bom!

  8. Sitting here watching this mess... at least prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is decent.  The Dragons' offense is simply a beating to watch. They are doing a decent job of explaining the rule differences, etc.  Would be more fun if the game had any offense whatsoever.

But then I realize that Johnny Manziel wasn't good enough for this league, and I laugh.

  9. Got damn. You're all overthinking the hell out of this. The smartest thing here is to leave the Big XII and Pac-12 conferences alone (Big XII to add two teams if desired) and form a media partnership with guaranteed cross-conference OOC games. Football only - there is no reason to mess with any other sport. UW cross-country doesn't need to travel to Lubbock nor does Texas VB need to travel to Corvallis.

All this stuff about "move UA and CU to the Big XII" ignores the fact that the two most successful football programs both financially and in terms of fan support outside of LA are UW and UO.

Stop overthinking this. Keep the regional conferences and work together. Take that to Disney or Apple or Amazon and see what they throw at it.

  10. Should indeed be low scoring but I expect the Seahawks' O line to be shredded by the Packers' D. Russell will be running for his life; fortunately (I guess) he's gotten used to that.

Would love to see a rubber match with SF next weekend but I think it'll be the Packers going to Santa Clara.

OU DC Alex Grinch appears to be one of the favorites for the job. Not sure how I feel about that. He had success at WSU, but if you want to go with a DC I would include Andy Avalos to the list as well.

I've heard from Coug friends that Mrs Grinch absolutely hated Pullman and didn't hide it much - have no idea if that's the case but if so might make that a difficult pull.

    Avalos is solid.
