  1. I haven't seen all the nominees, but American Fiction is the best movie I've seen this year. Definitely better than Oppenheimer or KOTFM.

The commercial made it seem like something fresh back in the 90’s
  2. if instead of Randi Trew and Chris Beard it was Randy Trew and Kris Beard then ESPN would probably be producing a 30 for 30 on Kris Beard, the women’s basketball coach who had the courage to finally fight back. that’s how stupid all of this is.

Bullshit. In reality, women who “fight back” are more likely to be murdered. Women who arm themselves, are more likely to have their abuser use that gun.

The problem we have is not equal between men and women. The hospitalized and deceased are few and far between battered men. Its an epidemic.

With exceptions, men cannot engage in fair physical confrontations with women. If you want to see how it plays out when women FAFO, watch the Joe Mixon video again.

At no point was Mixon, a large man with years of strength training in danger of being hurt. But he fucked that chick up. Mixon deserved more.

  3. But he does bankroll it. And his state department has done nothing but furrow its brow (on its best days)

That would be something. The ignominy of abandoning Israel after a major terrorist attack, siding with the terror faction Hamas and Iran, and reversing a half century of policy would be massive.

One big problem is that Netanyahu has meddled in US politics at the local, state, and federal levels. And has plenty of media support and experience manipulating social media.

The US is deeply divided on the issue largely on age. Older Americans side with Israel, remembering their plight and a Cold War ally who never funded terror attacks against Americans. Younger Americans side with Palestinians, and even Hamas, due to current events and dissonance about Israel’s rights there in the first place.

It’s a quagmire. I think if Biden took your advice, it would be followed by “…and I will be resigning” as he’d have no hope for re-election and he’d be turning over the White House back to dotard.

And middle ground is not helpful either. There are plenty of misguided people who will stay away from voting due to this issue, which has no easy answers and only more and more problems.
  4. I mean, kinda. I felt that the book was more objective. It presented the Comanches as human beings living in a culture that, albeit alien and hostile to Anglos, had its own internal logic and was understandable given its roots and context. Comanches lived like pretty much any plains tribe had been for centuries (millennia?). They were just doing it more effectively than their competitors.

Like I said, from our perspective, they were evil bastards. But they took care of their own and I agree they had their own logic. There were other tribes that werent nomads and they were shit out of luck unless they could trade something of value.

  5. That 26,000 rape related pregnancy number seems high. Is that high? I live in a non rape related pregnancy bubble.

That seems like a shit ton. Wonder if they count all unmarried minors as rape (statutory). It’s fucked up regardless.
  6. What struck me about the book was how deep it cut at Old West and Native portrayals in pop culture.

You’d both sympathize and be revolted by how Comanches operated as a warrior tribe. They were like apex predators and if couldnt provide them value they saw you as lesser beings. They cared only about taking care of their own people.

I’d like to see a fair depiction of their strength and rejection of western culture’s morality. Which might upset people.

I do expect the same old wise Indian monologues over peace pipes talking about the white men.

What was depicted in the book was these evil bastards (from our perspective) were terrorizing whites and natives alike. They’d get paid to stop raiding, then break treaties, only to have the ignorant US government terrorize other, more peaceful tribes confused it was Comanches.

We’ll see. Think Sheridan would be best outsourcing some of this work to others to make it fresh.

Did I spell all the words correctly? @slorch

  7. He was worse outside of the courtroom in the grand meeting scene. He and Leo were in different movies.

Digging in on your opinion? I’ll have to watch it again.

One of things that made KOTFM notable is the depiction of the banality and grotesque nature of evil. Having Leo and DeNiro be the two lead villains would not have been my choice because they seem cool and are legends on and off the screen.

But they both did well. I usually appreciate Leo’s performances after time and rewatches. Think they needed to be in it for box office.
  8. It was clear that he was doing what Marty asked of him, which was a directorial mistake. KOTFM was my favorite movie of the year and a modern master piece, but the Fraser stuff is just tonally off and disjointing.
I was at the NBR awards the other night, and Marty started talking about the scene where the Osage gather in a circle to talk about the ongoing travesty. He said they needed some audience reaction shots, so he asked one of the loquacious Osage actors to rile the folks up. The resulting off the cuff monologue was so great Marty decided to leave it in, and, in my opinion, is one of the best scenes of the movie.
    What a picture

The court room scene was a farce and demonstrated a miscarriage of justice was occurring. Therefore it was on point and (probably) historically accurate.

I dont doubt the Freemason’s spanking scene was also based on real stuff but that was weird too. The whole movie is filled with weird, evil and unbelievable shit that actually happened.

Regarding 1920’s lawyering, I read a book about the infamous lawyer turned Gatsbying bootlegger - George Remus - who got away with murder. He did theatrics similar to what Fraser was doing. The book covered this part in great detail. Dude was crying and yelling - I think in his own defense. Jury ate it up back then because they were rubes. Now juries eat up DNA evidence and crying blondes.

  9. Fantastic book but I wish someone else was doing the movie. Sheridan is becoming the Tyler Perry of this genre.

I am related to Cynthia Ann Parker and hence, the white side of Quanah Parker. Eager to see how the movie goes. The Comanche were fascinating and the greatest horse cavalry the world ever saw. Chased the Apache out of Texas and nearly pushed the frontier back to the Gulf.

The Comanche’s impact on world history is dwarfed by the Mongol Empire, who ended civilizations with their horse calvary.

  10. Funny, I tend to agree about Gangs of New York but see KOTFM completely differently. Generally thought the cast and performances were great (aside from whatever Brendon Fraser was doing) and the pacing wasn’t a problem. I felt the 3.5 hrs, but not in a bad way if that makes sense.
More so, I really push back that it was a poorly directed movie when there are a few sequences that were so well done and memorable that only a handful of people could have pulled them off. Specifically the ending, which was incredible. I don’t know if anyone else alive could have made it work.

1920’s lawyers acted that way and did so effectively.

  11. This was an absolutely fantastic role for DDL, however. I watch it just for his scenes.

Then you can excuse yourself from further discussions about Scorsese. Do you fast forward thru Breaking Bad for just the good parts?
  12. I finally saw this on Apple
In my opinion, it wasn’t particularly noteworthy. It felt hollow. More so, it felt like a vehicle propped up for Leo and Dinero to walk around a bit, sacrificing suspense of the investigation

Much like criticism of Oppenheimer of what wasn’t in the movie, sometimes people miss what was in the movie.

Lily Gladstone rightfully was nominated for her powerful performance that spent a great deal of time covering her family’s story, why it happened, and how it happened.

Scorsese did not make this into an FBI thriller. They intentionally avoided making this Mississippi Burning.

  13. They were raped during the Obama era, why didn't they blame him?  It's just a BS argument to blame the Chief because of some inept departments so far downstream.  Don't get me wrong, I'm no Art fan, but for other reasons he was more directly involved in.  Dude spent more time trying to whore his way on camera than actually doing his job.

Unless this is a parody, this is a pathetic opinion.

    Let’s break it down:

    1) Start off with a huge leap off False Comp Mountain. Reminds me of the Otter Defense.
    2) Describing the Crime Lab as a “department” “far downstream” is also a massive departure from norms. Perhaps this is our cue to know that you’re joking. Because when the average person watches a police procedural on tv, analyzing semen is like 1/4 of each show.
    3) Putting violent offenders who shoot off semen into or onto unwilling and/or dead victims behind bars seems like a big deal and probably should be something a Chief should be on top of.

Saw the news interviews of survivor groups dismay with Art and they expressed concerns of his seriousness with solving the crime lab issues and lodged an accusation that he retaliated against those critical of the crime lab issues.

My conclusion is that you were either joking or you’re a “I like rape” twice kind of guy.

  14. I believe Trump had a decent IQ ,but is very ignorant of a great many things even going back to the 80’s. In the Roy Cohn doc and from his biographer, he was portrayed as an empty suit who bullshitted and bullied his way thru business, but had limited attention span and no interest in reading.

His current intelligence is now deteriorated and he relies upon past phrases and word salads his way. He can turn a phrase still, and his instinct and savagery are in tact.

That the GOP has successfully pushed two incurious men into office, gravytraining on their way there based on their last name, is more reason to relegate the GOP as a viable party in our system of democracy.

  15. 1. Open ChatGPT and type "Write a MAGA book. 10 chapters. Use 8th grade grammar"
    2. Find some shady outfit to publish the book and pay you a 50% royalty.
    3. Have your campaign buy all copies of the book with campaign funds and give them away to doners.
    4. Use your "royalties" to pay the sanctions.

    8th grade grammar?

  16. This was a pretty good movie but that scene always kind of bugged me.   No NFL fan is wearing gear from two different teams especially when they were (sort of) rivals.  I don't care how much state pride you have.

She suffered mental illness, so that was kind of the point

  17. His criminal trial for fraud is when he lied (allegedly) to Republicans about investments and his benefit from their participation. I assume there are rooms of Republicans that hate Paxton more than even Democrats hate him.

That seems like a long time ago. Was that part of the Teapot Dome scandal?
