That Super Bowl performance? Meh... and I grew up with those songs.

Those songs seem very dated to me. Know how Beatles or Rolling Stones hold up? Those songs don't. As well, it's one thing for an old dude to rock behind a guitar. High-energy rapping when you're 60 and getting heavier just seems... weird.

I thought Snoop and Kendrick Lamar killed it. Eminem is Eminem.

Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, and Mary J. Blige? It just looked bad to me.

They were also really bad at lip syncing.  I realize all Super Bowl halftime performances are probably lip syncs, but at least try to sell it.  Dre standing up and walking away from a piano while it still plays, Eminem pulling the mic away from his mouth while he keeps rapping.  Lots of mess ups.

It would not have been tough to add a condition that medical guests with radical/extreme minority opinions must include equal time on the majority opinion. And that non-qualified guests are not allowed to air medical opinions.

This reminds me of a series he did on nutrition and diets I remember listening to a few years back and he had on two "experts" with opposing viewpoints.  Experts in quotes because for the life of me I can't remember who he had on.

Anyway, if I recall correctly one was a keto/carnivore diet advocate and the other was a plant based diet advocate.  The plant based guy cited scientific study after study throughout the entire three hour podcast showing where people who eat more plant based foods and less meat live longer, have higher bio markers of health, etc., etc., etc. and Rogan, who was supposed to be the middle guy or moderator of sorts in the debate, just constantly dismissed and dunked on him the entire time, saying the studies were flawed and so on.

Even as someone attracted to the keto diet and a fan of Rogan at the time it rubbed me the wrong way at how dismissive of peer reviewed studies and evidence Rogan was.  He is really just a conspiracy minded person who is always attracted to the outlier, non mainstream way of doing things.  I think it explains why he went from rooting for Bernie to rooting for Trump.  Both were the weird outlier non mainstream candidates compared to boring political old timer Joe Biden.

He can't give equal time to qualified majority opinions because he simply doesn't believe in experts unless they're spouting a minority opinion that goes against mainstream thought.  Everything is some sort of conspiracy.

It's frankly amazing how simple minded and easily manipulated into outrage they are over whatever twisted nonsense their choice of right-wing media outlet tells them to be outraged at.  Pretending CRT was being taught in elementary schools must have been milked for almost all it can, so they're moving on to Biden wants to give black people crack pipes.

This show is great for what it is. Concur on the opening credit sequence and Harcourt’s exceptional level of hotness.  Definitely entertaining.

Did you drive by him at first, have to slam on the brakes, reverse back to him and apologize because you couldn't see him?

These extra long hiatuses are murder. I lose interest even in very good shows if I've forgotten a lot of the prior season and don't feel like studying for the final.

Saw Odenkirk in Nobody on HBO. Pretty fun little actioner.

For sure.  And there's just way too much good content being produced all the time for me to go back and re-watch shows I've already seen.  I just don't have the time.  I loved Breaking Bad and have really liked this show as well, but my excitement for this final season is way more luke warm than it should be.  Maybe I'll skim through a few of the last episodes.

So Corolla is going the Kid Rock/Dennis Miller way?   Well, there's a market for that.  He'll turn a buck in that niche faster than in straight comedy.

Don't forget Jim Breuer and Dr. Drew.  I haven't even thought about Corolla since the Loveline/Man Show days. All of these 1990's entertainers have apparently spent the last two decades smoothing their brains out to Fox News propaganda and want to come back now to ruin their legacies.

Wish I did a S1 rewatch before this. I had a lot of feeling towards characters that I can't even remember what they're based on. Like Maddie is one of the chillest characters this season, and is shown multiple times being a good friend, but Cassie is still terrified that she will literally beat the shit out of her if she finds out (both can be true I guess). I remember hating her and her drama last season.

Also not seeing how Rue survives this season. She's pretty damn far gone. For some reason I didn't peg Elliot as just another addict, but when he "confessed" to Jules that Rue was relapsing, I viewed him in the same light. He talks deep and is open (or conniving), but he's also an addict.

I'm in the exact same boat.  I'm watching and enjoying season 2, but there's soooooo much I can't remember from season 1 and feel like I'm always confused on what certain characters' motivations are.  I'm sure there's a wikipedia page or online recap of everything that happened in season 1 if I stop being lazy and search for it before this next week's episode.

I don't think Cooter was really commenting on her appearance or talent, per se. Just observing that quite a few of these kid stars have "star power" based on that alone.

Also, I think the fact that she's bi- or multi-racial scores points with youth.  It's amazing how often multi-racial kids, even with fairly unattractive parents, turn out pretty attractive.  It will be nice in a lot of ways when the races get more mixed up.

And that's fair.  I had no idea she was bisexual either.  The only other thing I know her from is the Spiderman movies so I'm not really familiar with any of her Disney stuff or upbringing.

What’s funny about this show is that high school kids today are boring, sexless, straight edge prudes compared to their peers from the 90s or even 00s.  This show is an anachronism shot to look cutting edge.

What is this opinion based on?  Generally curious because I don't have high school kids nor do I personally know anyone in that age group anymore, but I don't think teen pregnancies have suddenly stopped being a thing, have they?  I have a hard time believing the above.

An entire generation grew up with her on the Disney Channel. Acting ability didn’t matter to the 5-14 year old set. She was the cool kid. They’re fans for life. Now that those kids are spending their own money, that alone will get her jobs.

Y'all need glasses.  She may not be a traditional Hollywood bombshell or as good looking as Cassie, but she's not even close to being considered unattractive.  She's very cute in a girl next door kind of way.

Okay but that’s only part of it, keep playing the song out to the end of the tape, if you will.

Now that person who benefitted has the ability to put $50k down to buy the starter house you wanted or to start the business that you had an idea for, but you’ve put your finite resource (money via income) into something that nobody else will have to so you don’t have the savings. Now they will have an exponential advantage on wealth building than you could ever have.

I guess you can argue the experience and discomfort and struggling and pain of being young and paying off a massive amount of student loans has its own intrinsic reward of character (e.g what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, learned that sacrifices are hard, learned how to struggle with grace or stoicism, etc.), but it would be hard to not see how resentment and bitterness would have to exist in a normal, average human condition. That is why I think there should be some program or rebate or enablement for those in the last 20 or 30 years who can prove by documentation that they paid off student loans that would otherwise have been forgiven. And if you are in default or not current on student loans you aren’t eligible for forgiveness.

I FINALLY paid off the last of my loans in 2021 from a school I graduated from in 2009 from a degree I don't even use directly anymore and no longer have anything to do with the field of study.  It took forever because I initially put off paying it seriously for a long time, plus after getting divorced with a lot of debt there was some struggle and deferments/forbearances along the way. I was fortunate enough to also have some help from my parents.  But it was finally all paid off in 2021.

I give zero shits if the government comes in and helps other people with these burdensome school loans even though I've now paid my own off.  I just don't get the mindset of "well, I suffered through it so everyone else has to suffer, too."

The only thing I really have against the blanket forgiveness of loans is that it does nothing to address why school is so expensive now in the first place. There's no good reason school needs to cost as much as it does today compared to three, four, five decades ago.   I think the potential downside is that banks and schools might be emboldened to increase prices and give out even bigger loans if they know the government will just come in and write a blank check to pay off debts.  I'd like to see legislation tied to school loan forgiveness that aims at reducing the cost of college whether it's by allowing loans to be written off through normal bankruptcy, price caps on what schools can charge, or whatever it takes.  We don't need to be having the conversation again every 10 years.

You can tell Gilded Age has been in purgatory and was originally written to be an NBC show.   It appears to be a homeless man’s version of Downton Abbey without the wit (which is probably to be expected) but also without the drama/tension and any examination of the lower classes’ and servants’ plight, which is pretty bizarre.

When the British show about tranquil countryside manors has way more exciting plot points and pays more attention to class inequality than an American show about rapidly industrializing New York City in the freaking gilded age, something has gone really wrong.  I was expecting Downton Abbey meets corruption, murder and mayhem, and exploitation of the underclasses, where the high society ladies looking down on the nouveau riche ladies was a small element as opposed to the entire show.

That's disappointing to hear.  I didn't realize this was already out, but I was hoping it would scratch that Downton Abbey itch.

You made a blanket statement that is verifiably untrue. Many felons get second chances. You also mentioned race, and it is also verifiably untrue that it means nothing in the realm of who gets a second chance. I am sorry to hear that story about your sister, I only browsed the last page or so.

This isn't really the thread to digress down this rabbit hole, but I think the truth is a little more nuanced.  Having a felony of any kind is automatically living life on hard mode though. People don't just overlook felonies because you're white.

Want a good job?  It's going to be at least 7 years before that felony stops showing up on most standard private corporation background checks.  Maybe at that point you can hide from it and it'll also be long enough that your name won't show up on the first couple of pages of a standard Google search.  But many HR departments at big companies will automatically throw out felony applicants without hesitation or second thought.  Many professional licenses you will be barred from permanently.

Need a place to live?  Most large leasing companies that own apartment complexes will throw your application in the trash the second they find out you have a felony.  There are some second chance complexes out there, but most of those require you to be 10 years removed from the end of your probation/parole/sentencing.  So if you got mixed up in something in 2004, served an eight year sentence or probation, you would only now this year in 2022 qualify for many of those places.  Otherwise I hope you either have family or friends that will help you out with a place to live or can find a unicorn rental property either on Craigslist or through word of mouth that either doesn't run background checks or is privately owned and will work with you.  Otherwise you're probably going to be living in a shithole somewhere that is highly unsafe surrounded by other felons.

Not to mention in the case of someone like Hayden's sister or any number of people that were likely intelligent, good-hearted people that got caught up in something bad, whatever underlying trauma or issues probably led to them using and getting caught with the drugs in the first place may be unresolved or still haunting them after the fact.  Pile on the enormous burden of new hoops you have to jump through just to try to build a normal, decent life along with having the label of a felon tethered like a weight to your ankles, and there's a reason why recidivism is so high and so many people don't make it.  So do felons get second chances?  Sure.  But at a huge cost and it's easy to see why rehabilitation is not common and why so many will ultimately fail.

Although I wouldn't really put Mulaney and Jeselnik in the same box.  Mulaney swears, but he's not dark or dirty at all.  He's fairly PG 13 with only a few extra allowances of the F word.
