  1. Kidding aside, I've watched more baseball in 6 weeks (and fallen in love again, as it were) than I have the past 6 years. I started the trial of FobuTV to watch and now I happily pay the monthly fee. I was excited and bought some new Rangers gear this weekend and am planning a trip to the ballpark with the family (something we haven't done in ages).

So yea, I guess I'm a front runner too-- like he said, it happens. Not being depressingly bad will do wonders for the turnout and interest of a team, who knew?

Roman will fail hugely. He always has, always will.

I’ve long thought we were headed towards Kendall Roy King of Ashes, but wondering if instead they have Roman force Ken out with the murder card. Nobody really wins is the only sure bet at this point.

My bet is Roman being the unlikely heir apparent and winner of the succession of thrones. We see his turn this season, he's firing people, he's getting a taste of pure power, and this week he was the most focused and clear on execution (and correct, in pursuit and to keep power).

The teaser next week shows him breaking out of the shell as the showman and charismatic face.

My bet is Roman is the Michael Corleone of the Roy family and we will see an ending that solidifies Roman's turn to baby Logan and the last episode will leave us with the assurance that the cutthroat empire is in good hands.

so how many people are clamoring for entry today?

cnn just said approximately 150k people in northern Mexico are waiting to enter. let's be dumb and multiply that by 10. Let's say about a million or million and a half are waiting to enter.

our population is around what 330 million?

i will ask again: so, what if we just say welcome and let them in? we could disperse them throughout the country. no one would even notice.

You are spot-on; if you could evenly distribute and thin it out, nary a soul would notice or care. The reality, not saying it's problematic, is that populations concentrate in small areas, stressing resources. It's understandable though, as there is safety and comfort in community.

gotta leave something for the inevitable movie.

I do want to hear Ted Crimm's assessment. Dude has been a fly on the wall, I want that payoff.

I wonder if you get him narrating some of it at the end of the movie like The Hobbit or the critic in Ratatouille as the show fades out to some interesting, obscure-yet-not song that is perfect for the ending.

  5. Sixty thousand people were waiting near the border to enter the US yesterday, though Border Patrol is already far beyond capacity with 25,000 migrants in custody, the BBC reported

It sucks, given how completely fucked up school policies are regarding situations like this, but the old-school ways are sometimes still the best ones.  Teach your boys how to break someone's nose.  If they are slight of frame or just can't throw a punch, they're likely carrying around steel water bottles which will do the trick just as nicely.  One time is all it will take, and no one will fuck with them again.  Should be the oldest boy and then make sure word is spread that if anyone fucks with his brother, they'll get the same treatment.   It's not pretty, it's not progressive, and it will come with consequences.  But those consequence might be worth it depending on how badly this is fucking up your kids' mental health.

This is really bad advice. Trying to break a nose and assaulting a kid with a metal water bottle for saying mean things will probably result in the kid "defending" himself to be in very big trouble.

Nevermind, looks like you were joking and the OP was joking.

i think it is more Rupert wanting Nate to be focused, ruthless, and miserable with a chip on his shoulder - not a satisfied, in love, complacent Nate.

I half expected West Ham to get a beat down in their game this episode to show Nate was getting soft, ie: less effective as a manager - but that didn't happen.

I thought the show tried to illustrate that he's still very focused on his job-- staying late and strategizing with the whiteboard, always focused and heads down in his office on plays and stratagem, etc.

The 2007 strike was mostly focused on DVD and syndication royalties. Internet streaming was not a major player.

This strike comes after the explosion of internet streaming and the 2020 repeal of the Paramount Decrees.

Movie studios now have the right to control the distribution of their produced content (whether it be theatrically or streaming).

This used to be a major obstacle for old studio systems like Paramount because they were constrained by rules not applicable to companies like Netflix and Amazon producing and releasing their own content.

A lot of these WGA negotiations used to hinge on royalties that were tied to profit sharing from box office numbers. When productions are shifted to streaming platforms, it can change how the viewership numbers are calculated to determine profit sharing. It is also up to the companies themselves to provide streaming numbers (which they do not like to share), which adds another layer to the negotiations because the formula to standardize this count needs to be negotiated as well.

I would not be surprised if streamers started vertically integrating and creating their own bubble of non-union productions and hyping up their own superstars similar to how the old studio system used to exist from the 20s-40s.

The bold is, from what I understand, the biggest problem the writers have with getting their deal done. They don't have the access to the data/numbers.

So was this "telegraphed" or did the contract just expire at a better time? The last strike happened midseason-mid filming. I mean so many shows were just destroyed by the last strike. Despite streaming, etc, network TV still exists. This will break something.

Per @henrygandorf, who is about as plugged in as anyone on here for this stuff, he said:

the weird lesson here, which i guess is unavoidable, is why announce and publicize the strike?  everyone knew the deal would lapse on may 1st, and as far back as november, people who knew said nothing would be resolved before now, so everyone saw this coming.  but a strike is supposed to cause turmoil through its unpredictability, and leave the higher-ups with no other option than to cave in to the demands.  there have been strikes before and everyone was ready for this one, so it's ho-hum, here we go again.

Someone joked the other day that that the last writer's strike caused Jesse Plemons to become a murderer, one of the dumbest ever story lines on a popular network tv show, and they hoped this new strike won't lead to such pitiful new scripts.

I think though a major difference between this strike and the one in 2007 is that nobody expects this one will be over anytime soon whereas the strike in 2007 lasted just 3 months. Also in 2007 there were still shows on network OTA that people cared about and the issues this time are much more complex.

Yea I think that's my point and the one Henry made earlier-- the strike was so telgraphed and known that everyone prepared for it. Studios and streamers and people all have a lot of dry powder and provisions to wait it out, and generally the everyday people and watcher of tv shows, aren't affected. Nobody is watching Channel 8 or Channel 5 at a specific time and date anymore for a show.
