He didn't have to hire Rodney Terry.

PR people are pretty clueless these days. We are assaulted with bad news every day in this modern world. They are so afraid of people getting offended. But everyone is so offended by everything these days, that a news cycle doesn't last nearly as long.

I understand firing Beard. His indiscretions would linger for longer and be used against Texas in recruiting, etc. Clearly no one gives a fuck anymore with a fresh start at Ole Miss.

Whatever "bad press" Texas would have received for not hiring Rodney Terry would have lasted only as long as the day a potential new coach would have been hired. And then the Terry story would have completely gone away.

I think it’s cute that people think CDC made any of these decisions.
You are right, that folks attention span these days is short. Any blowback would have lasted maybe a week. I’m my view they made one mistake and then compounded it by making another.

The optics of only giving Terry 2 years are going to be too much for our leaders.  they will succumb to the pressure, guaranteed.

Yes, because Eltife will have to acknowledge he was wrong.

I was only partially paying attention, but I honestly thought the talk on here about Bjork going to tOSU was a joke.

I didn't know why it was being brought up because I couldn't comprehend any one actually hiring him after the Jimbo, Stoops, to Elko debacle.

I take his hire as tOSU buying his explanation that no one was letting him do his job and all the dysfunction was caused by other stupid people making these stupid decisions.  Think about it. They would have to believe that these weren’t actions initiated or carried out by him.
But the best part is that obviously they found it in character for A&M and totally believable.

Beard fucked it for everyone. He had to go.

the optics of an interim well like coach going to the elite 8 coaching the majority of the season and then being unceremoniously told to kick rocks is a bad look and worth seeing through/the buyout if it doesn’t work out. It was absolutely the right thing to do. Let’s not all pile on and act like a tournament miss is a sure thing just yet, but if it does then I think it’s pretty much over for him.

Not arguing with you but the same argument will be made if we fire him before three losing seasons. We could miss the tournament, fire him and then be criticized for not giving him a chance. He’s probably here for three years no matter what.

Nah,  you have that wrong on Beard.  At least half the board wanted him fired (including me, and I stand by that opinion).

I think you are right about that but I also think a lot of people didn’t want to express an opinion as several posters (not you to my recollection) were pretty aggressive about calling those who would have kept him as being pro domestic violence.

1989 made in Japan hard tail strat with a motivated seller.  The pickguard and pickups are not original.  Has some fender custom shop pups in it that I can’t fully identify.  It’s been knocked around a bit and has an all natural relic job but the neck/frets are in good shape.  Plays and sounds great.  Deciding if I want to keep it for awhile or just re-list on reverb.  If I keep it, I’ll probably swap the pickguard and knobs for parchment.

In 1985 or so I went into a music store that was going out of business and used $225 that had saved from cutting grass to buy a brand new sunburst MIJ E-Serial Number Strat. I had no idea how to play guitar at that point nor what it was I was buying. I just thought it looked good.
I hauled that guitar around with me for the next thirty years. It was beautiful and really well made. The neck and rosewood board was perfect.  I think it was called something like a Contemporary Strat.
When I finally learned how to play I ended up getting rid of it because it had a locking string thing above the nut and one of those 1980 dive bomber trem/bridge things that screamed hair metal.
But, the quality of that guitar was great in every respect and would buy another one from that period with a traditional set up in a heartbeat.

This is a legitimately stupid comment. Beard was the answer and he completely fucked it. Everything was trending the right way. Moody center is easily the nicest venue in the country to watch a basketball game in. The fans were stoked. Everything was ready to blow and then he had to seriously flush it all down the toilet and now the sport is stuck with a HC who deserved to get a shot but has quickly proven this is too big a job for him.

He's a great support guy and can make the minor adjustments through the course of a season or game but he can’t overall talent and game plan year over year like the best in the business and that’s what Texas requires for success in todays landscape.

I agree except with the “deserved to get a shot part”. Anyone else with the exact same resume and circumstances from another school would have never been considered for our vacancy.
I get that minds differ on this but it just grates me that we had to settle for such a predictably terrible hire because of PR and outside pressure.

Other than UK, KU, UNC and Duke, I think we can beat out any program when it comes to hiring the basketball HC. Instead we chose to settle for someone who no other top program would have wanted. Hope CDC learns from this mistake going forward.

Eltife is the one who needs to learn from his mistakes. He pretty much runs everything. CDC probably gets too much credit and too much blame when it comes to coaching hires in football and basketball.

Oh - by the fucking way - we aren't firing him until likely the end of next season at the least.

So anyone commenting "he probably doesn't get fired this season" - yeah no fucking shit.

Y'all realize the dipshit before him went six fucking full seasons at Texas without winning a tournament game.

Not without making a nice run - without winning a damn game.

Terry was at the helm when we won the B12 tourney and made the EE and should have went further.

Dude gets 2 full seasons no fucking question.

(That said I will be here with the rest of you demanding he resigns 12 games into his 2nd season)

Yeah, I don’t see them letting him go after only one year. Part of the pressure they caved to was from the former players.
But, I do know that there is some concern about what’s going on with the Moody crowd. There was apparently some heartburn about how many Tech fans were able to get tickets. They are worried about it becoming the Erwin Center.

That doesn't mean anything. Have you watched this team play basketball? You haven't noticed the glaring holes?

This isn't me defending Terry, by the way. He's responsible for the team that takes the floor either way. But these guys are in serious need of a B12 caliber starting PG because right now they have 0. And that's a bad recipe for winning in this league.

Both can be true. I think that with better coaching this team should be performing better despite not having a point guard.

I think they did the best they could under the circumstances.

The fallout from letting him go after an Elite Eight appearance might have been worse.

Worse than the team he’s putting out there?  Worse than the team will be next year?  No thanks. I get what you are saying but it’s a trade off I would not make.

I'll largely give RT a pass for this season because I think this roster is actually really bad and no one here predicted that.

But part of being the HC is assembling a competent roster. He will at least get another year here, and maybe after this season he retools in a positive way.

I actually don't think we look particularly poorly coached - we just look completely inept at a key position in a way that we weren't last season. I mean fuck me Abmas plays zero D and Tyrese looks like he's never seen a basketball half the time. It's a horrendous combo and RT isn't coaching them out of it.

Yes we don’t have a true point guard but this group of players should be better than they are. Coaching is the problem.
Do you really think these guys would be playing as poorly on defense if Beard was still coach?  I don’t.

As I've stated before, I agree with one portion of the "Democrats are Pussies" narrative.  Most of them simply do not have the stones nor the horses for the Final Solution to the Maga Question.  It is genuinely difficult and gut-wrenching to have people killed.  But once you get over the first few, the next few million are merely a statistic.  This whole thing, it doesn't end in a courtroom or a ballot box.  It ends in a mass grave.

I’ve taken an interest in Huey T. Long. Really fascinating for those who might not know that he ran Louisiana as an authoritarian state. He actually held the office of Gov and Senator at the same time.
He was primed to run against FDR and by all accounts was on his way to having a significant chance of becoming president.
Essentially, maybe the only reason we aren’t already there is because he was gunned down.  What I found interesting is that the mass movement he mobilized fizzed out after his death.  It remained in Louisiana but this guy had expanded his movement nationwide.

i’m not talking about the university, just our fans and their expectations. you’ll see in my follow up post that i mentioned beard, bill self, and coach cal. these guys sign the best recruits, win the most games, and they hang banners. hell even coach k and john wooden did WAY more dirt than anything barnes ever did. so my point is just that it’s very very hard to find yourself a jay wright- that is, if you’re going to be a program that wins big, you’re probably going to have either an asshole or an unscrupulous bastard of a HC. empirically speaking anyway.

I contend that Barnes became too nice.  I preferred the guy who nearly got in a fistfight with Dean Smith.
