  1. Finally hit 245, lowest weight since I was in college.  I feel like I should be able to do everything I want now, and feel better than I have in forever.  I can do pull-ups, bench my own body weight, and my resting HR is around  50 bpm, which isn’t where it was in college (mid 30s) but pretty good.

The final push was going right off sugar after new years.  That shit is worse than anything else including alcohol.

I have noticed, when I drink a glass of wine, I tend to sleep a lot worse.  Maybe I’ll stick to day drinking only, or just skip the wine except for special occasions.

I saw my GP a couple of weeks ago and she was pretty happy with me, she said she doesn’t have many 50 yo patients on no medications at all.

  2. Glad to see the tilting at windmills of covid denial is still there.  Look, for some reason this virus has the added benefit of breaking people’s brains, but I don’t think any rational person thinks it’s a bigger deal than the flu or RSV right now.  It’s anecdotal but in the groups that I’m in contact with, those two are much worse for two reasons.  One the symptoms are hitting harder, and two, people seem to think they should be careful if they pop for covid, but don’t think twice about going to work and mingling if they’re under the weather.

As a result my office (I’m remote, fuck that) has had a wave of respiratory illness come through about a quarter of the dummies because they thought it was “allergies”.  These are college educated people.

    Our public health messaging sucks.

I have a long term commitment locally until summer of 2025. I'm going to look in earnest this fall about moving to D.C. or Minneapolis, maybe central coast California. This shit is too far and there's no signs of sanity returning to Texoma anytime soon.

  4. Thanks for the shout out… I’m starting to feel like a local after two years of carpet bagging.  I’ll definitely share my opinions, in no particular order.  First off, Carmel by the Sea is very different than the other side of the peninsula - PG and New Monterey.  I have only eaten at a couple of Carmel restaurants in this whole time.  Because of that, I’d go with @We’reTexas recommendations there, but I’ll list my thoughts.

Tommy’s Wok behind Wells Fargo in downtown is just barely ok Chinese.  I really like the Treehouse Cafe for its outdoor deck, every visitor I’ve taken there has really enjoyed it.

In Monterey, I love Sea Harvest to buy my fish, but they also sell it prepared and it’s really good and reasonably priced.

In PG, my favorite fish place is Wild Fish.  It’s new, it’s expensive, and really excellent.  Live jazz with dinner.   Worth a visit no matter what.  We’ve eaten at Passionfish and I must be one of the few who wasn’t impressed.  Their wine list is great and pretty reasonably priced, but my entree and my wife’s weren’t any thing special.

Folktale is really fun, and a short drive into the valley from Hwy 1.  There is also a good little restaurant that direction named the Corkscrew Cafe, which several friends in the valley love.  I’ve eaten there twice and definitely enjoyed it.

For activities, it depends how physically capable everyone is but there are dozens of beautiful hikes:  Jacks Peak (best view of the bay), Garland Park in Carmel Valley, any number in Big Sur from Pfeiffer to Garrapata to the previously mentioned Point Lobos.  I’ll be a little contrarian and say Point Lobos, while beautiful and interesting, is not the best experience because it gets pretty packed in on weekends.

If you want beaches, it’s not for swimsuits.  You’re going to wear a jacket or a wetsuit.  Surf spots are mainly Asilomar in PG (my favorite place in the world) and occasionally Carmel, but besides that you’re going to Santa Cruz.  For walking beaches though, Carmel, Carmel River, and Julia Pfeiffer in Big Sur are probably the other highlights.

We’re members of the aquarium and it deserves all the accolades it gets - really spectacular place for the whole family.  The rest of Cannery Row is meh as is the Wharf in Monterey.  The whale watching  is awesome if you don’t get seasick.  Ocean is flattest before noon, so take an early tour.  It’s expensive though…

Lovers Point in PG has kayak rentals and usually is easy to paddle out and see otters frolicking in the kelp.  Moss Landing has calmer water and equal amounts of cool wildlife but is not nearly as beautiful a setting.

Last, if you are looking for a Sunday brunch or a place to stay, Mission Ranch (Clint’s place) is so cool.  Views of point lobos, sheep in the tidal river flat behind the hotel, and beautiful huge trees all around.

I’ve probably forgotten something blindingly obvious so I may hop back in if it comes to me.

  5. What a comeback.  Sinner just dominated that final set and hardly put a foot wrong.  Well deserved win and I think he and Alcaraz seem destined to be the next big thing on the men’s tour.

  6. Posting on surly is my post retirement gig.

Seriously, if you can leverage what you did full time into part time consulting adjacent to that role, that seems like the easiest step unless you hated what you did.

My two options are to consult part time or to try and teach engineering basics as an adjunct at community college.  Which is interesting but I have never taught formally, so maybe not.

  7. Her issue was always between her ears.  Her physical tools are spectacular.  She’s fun to watch and I’m happy she seems to have gotten over her slam jitters in a big way.

Djoker becoming mortal gruntles me too.

  8. Yeah season 2 was pretty bad after one.  The whole team thing didn’t work well and the bad guy was really stupid throughout.  Reacher looks like he’s about to cry half the time.  I’ll watch season 3 but not expecting much.
