I recently had a very nice watch stolen. Details aren’t important but it fucking sucks (stolen out of a car). I’m working with my insurers and have reported the incident to police - I’ve also had a jeweler contact post on the local and national Jewelers Helping Jewelers Facebook pages.

How else would y’all go about trying to recover? Are any of the watch databases like this one legit? I am fucking sick right now.

Honestly - your best bet is going to be checking ebay for a listing or call every pawn broker in a 50 mile radius.

US Marshals must have had a hell of a seizure.  The company in Pflugerville that handles their auctions (also did the Madoff auctions for them) has an auction going with probably more than 20 watches going over $10K right now (a lot of blinged out Rolex) including two Richard Mille that are at $211K and $227K respectively.

Must have. Most of the Rolex's are going at or near market rate.  If they had more info posted on those daytonas might be able to trip into a gem there depending which iteration they are.

Wrong. I’ve bought many grey market watches and never had an issue. No worries with buying something from DavidSW or Takuya.  if you buy on EBay, you as the buyer are going to pay the seller’s commission to a eBay which is ridiculously high.

Why does the sellers commission matter if I get the piece for 50% of retail with full third party authentication?  I don’t give a shit what the seller or eBay nets if I get the right deal.

How do you figure that?  That doesn’t even make sense.

Nothing any invoice has ever said I paid the sellers fees.  I don’t even think EBay presents that as an option.

New semester and some interesting observations on the analytics front at a PhD granting business school.

What I was teaching to my undergrad Analytics majors 5 years ago is now being taught in a lesser dumbed down manner to business students as their second semester stat course. Old format of stat up to central limit theorem first semester and through high end regression and modeling has been replaced with combine everything up to regression in one class and then do reg, time series, descriptive data mining, Simple linear programming, simulation, and decision theory instead. Makes a stronger overall student profile for employment.

Grad students all want to take analytics courses, but most can’t really hack the math/logic. Lots of growth in applied modeling logic, not a ton of students really interested in the DB side of big data. May be we have shitty DB faculty, but the students are gravitating to learning some form of query language and then moving on  into analytics roles.

Doc students are now all actively observing any class that teaches analytics to help prepare them for the new sets of standard interview questions that are now coming up regularly in faculty interviews. This is true for both the applied quant and Information Systems doc students.

Everyone wants to learn text mining, but most can only grasp sentiment drive  approaches. Text topic extraction concepts seem to still blow most students away. Lots of interest in internal mining of corporate reporting for new populism concepts (things that are ground up concerns, not top down ideas) and they are willing or pay top dollar.

Not a ton of issues with placement for any student level as long as they can actually “talk” what analytics is and what it does. I see a major difference in placement rates vs comp Sci or data science/engineering and the main answer from recruiters is they want people that understand it and can explain it to those outside of their department.

Lets see how this semester goes and see what other new weird things pop up.

If they want to be "ahead" of the curve, they should be checking out Network Reinforcement Learning and Graph Theory.

So, does anyone watch any of those grey market watch seller videos on youtube?  There are a couple of different one channels that looks like they move a shit ton of watches but it seems like a real slimy business.

Avoid them like the plague.  If you're going to venture in the grey market, I'd suggest EBay and look for pieces that come with an authenticity guarantee.  EBay holds the funds in escrow until the watch can be validated.

I was looking a Mad Paris Explorer II and agreed to a price with a seller - seller shipped it to the verifications group at EBay and didn't pass muster.  EBay sent me my funds back that day and booted the seller.

I think Norwich in two weeks is make or break for Arteta.

There's been chatter that he's been given 5 matches to get it sorted out before a move is made.  Not tracking well for him.

Dortmund can charge whatever they like in that scenario and they should. If PSG wants to splash the cash, make them pay a record amount. Haaland will be sold in January for a summer debut regardless and it will be a lot less than what they could get for him right now.

Pay them 150mm-160mm and Dortmund has to take it.  Haaland + 20mm for Mbappe who no longer has a natural fit in the attack?  I’d take that all fucking day and twice on Sundays.

"[Matt Law] Paris Saint-Germain are attempting to make an incredible last-minute swoop to replace Kylian Mbappe with Erling Haaland in what could complete one of the most remarkable ends to a transfer window in history."

I'd link it but it's paywalled.

    What the fuck.

Oh fuck.  Makes a lot of sense.  Haaland up the middle with Neymar & Messi playing wide of him?  Fuck that’s scarier than trying to force fit Mbappe into that spot.

If they pull it off, PSG might have had the best summer window in football history.

But he said "Nike needs a superstar in Madrid". While Mbappe being the star of the show at a big team is a good thing generally, I'm not sure they'd have a specific yen for an Adidias team. If anything they probably wish Barca hadn't shot their own dick off financially.

Nike does need him there.  Specifically on one of the worlds most recognized, followed, and branded clubs.  Regardless of who manufactures their kits.

La Liga needs him the most considering there is no star attraction there now that Messi has left.  Nobody is tuning into Spanish matches to watch “insert any La Liga player” here and they just got a fat new tv contract.

Imagine being Nike and not having a global star playing in globally televised league.

so those guys are all going to willingly hop on board the Kroenke Train, taking over a subpar squad that was just hand selected to be coached by Arteta, knowing full well that they have an uphill battle to get us back into the CL, that Wenger, Emery, and Arteta all failed to do so, and that Emery and Arteta were given only a couple of seasons (less than two seasons for Arteta) before they were fired. buddy, i don't think you have a clue what you're talking about. why in the fuck would any of those coaches want to step into that situation? "we just bought a bunch of players for Mikel Arteta and then we immediately fired him. please come take this job, and get us back into the CL next year, or you're fired too." yeah that sounds doable. 🙄

the manager is not the problem. the problem is and always has been KSE. now that KSE has *finally* spent competitive money, you want to sack the guy who they just bought all the players for, immediately after buying them that is some completely nonsensical, short sighted, irrational, know-nothing fanboy shit. but uh, keep yelling and cussing and believing that the magical formula is to simply can the manager and suddenly everything is all better. clearly i can't stop you.

They’re not working.  Why the fuck would they not.?

the fact of the matter is is that arteta is getting out coached.  Bottom line.  He’s done by week 4.

If I’m the owner, and he trots out that dogshit after what they invested, questionable or not, youre goddamn right I’d be asking “what’s up” to the manager.

so, you're not going to answer my question, you can't name a viable replacement, and you're going to insult me in the process. yup. this is why i said that arsenal fans are by and large a buncha retards who are only happy when they're miserable.

Valverde, Setien, Pirlo, etc.  Do I need to keep going?

You are flat fucking wrong dude.

ok, so let's fire him. then what? what top flight manager is going to join this club and fix everything? when Wenger left we had an incredibly attractive job opening and we got Emery; then Freddie; now a rookie manager; so let's fire our third manager in five years, moments after we've just signed a whole bunch of young players whom he personally recruited, players selected to play his style. explain to me what happens after we fire Arteta, and how it does anything to improve the state of the club.

Dude, you’re literally identifying all the reasons he shouldn’t be the coach.  He’s literally getting coached out of the box.  It doesn’t matter who is on the pitch.  You cannot be this fucking dense.

And no.  You don’t get another fucking rookie manager.  You go get one that knows what he’s doing.  We drop $150mm this summer and we can’t pay a top flight manager?  Get the fuck out of here with that bullshit.

sigh. y'all act like we're fielding a really good team with lots of balance and depth and experience together. we aren't. no Auba, no Laca, no Odegaard, no Partey, no White, no Bellerin. our captain is Granit Xhaka. we have a team full of young, inexperienced players, many of whom are either getting real minutes for the first time, playing a new position, or both, and y'all act we're supposed to be some well oiled machine. i have no idea what you expected from today, but i'm actually pleasantly surprised that it wasn't 4-0. Chelsea's bench could have beaten our starting lineup today. this is still a work in progress.

this summer is the first summer since i became a fan over a decade ago where we've actually gone out and spent big money/initiated a total squad overhaul, and yet you guys want to fire the manager who just selected and brought in all of these players. i'm sorry, but y'all are tripping with no map.

do you want Arsenal to be good or not? because firing the manager who just now brought in all of this young talent isn't going to do it. we've spent the money; we've secured the core of the team for the next 3+ years. how about we give the guys at least a season to see if they can jell and find some chemistry.in my opinion, firing Arteta now would be the stupidest possible move, and it pains me that y'all can't see that.

and FTR, i don't support Arteta any more than i did Ljungberg or Emery- this isn't about him. this about doing a team overhaul the right way. give the manager an actual chance with all of the players he just brought in. and temper your expectations for the time being. you don't have to be a football savant to look at our current lineup and know that we're going to suck for a minute, just like you don't need to be a football savant to know that these players have had zero time to play together, learn and earn their roles, and then bring it all together out on the pitch. if we don't show real improvement by next spring then sure, fire Arteta and being in one of those young German coaches to build up this young core. but get rid of any ideas you have about firing Arteta now. that would be insanity.

You are wholesale wrong.  The tactics the last two matches showed how out classed Arteta is as a manager.

It took him 45 minutes to realize he left the entire left side exposed.  We’re losing out of the tunnel because he’s bad at his job.

He has a ton of great, young talent on hand.  He just doesn’t know how to fucking use them.

Martinelli was a non-factor and half the players you cited as the “core” didn’t play.  You said it yourself, there is no map.
