oh yeah, to add on to this point, i am friends on instagram with a ton of my former students who are now adults, and you can actually see the divide between those kids whose parents worked their asses off and/or got scholarships in order to attend our school, vs those who just come from wealth and would never consider going to a lesser school, despite paying anywhere from $20-$35k per year per student (lots of families with 3-4 kids at the school) over the years.
for example, you’ll see kids who graduated and went off to UT, Oregon, or Cal, and they will post about the current events and the political atmosphere, eg supporting trans rights or disavowing donald trump. meanwhile, the super wealthy kids they went to school with for 12 years are posting photos on their yachts in greece, or at the taylor swift concert in london, or on a girl’s trip (so, four 20 year old girls from four different wealthy families) to italy, spain, and portugal. ghey may have gone to school together for 12 years, but they come from and live in different worlds.
the truly wealthy folks can be “the best people you know” (seriously, it’s been heartbreaking for my mom and me to have so many close relationships with these types of people from our school), but they will still vote republican every time, and they will always be so disconnected from the world that the rest of us live in that they’ll never come close to being able to empathize or commiserate.
