either god hates me and i’m the unluckiest dude alive, or, there’s more people like me than some of y’all realize, and you’re painting with an overly broad brush without even realizing it.

i’ve had several. i’m on a cpap that’s covered by my medicaid. that’s the extent of what they can do. oh yeah, reminding you that i used to have my dream job at a place where i would have stayed for the rest of my working life- you wanna see what my monthly income is now? and that’s the max that they give. go ahead and explain to me how i’m not supposed to subsist off of the cheapest, most overly processed bullshit available when i make less in a month than many of you do in a day. some choice.

oh yeah, i meant to add that i’ve been seeing neurologists since i was in middle school. i’ve had (at least) four eeg’s done, and they’ve all been inconclusive. i was told that the eeg’s detected “seizure activity”, but seeing as ive never had an epileptic seizure i was never diagnosed with anything until the myoclonic epilepsy diagnosis in 2010. at the time i had a m-f job and a personal trainer at gold’s gym, and i was 1 year out of rehab/off all drugs. after the myoclonic epilepsy got so bad that my trainer dumped me and i got fired from my job (i had jerks every night of the week for hours on end until i eventually hallucinated that jesus christ, god, and my dead relatives all came and visited me) i got the diagnosis and was put back on clonazepam. i’ve never stopped taking it since then, and my list of rx drugs is now laughably long. every day for me: lithium baclofen nuedexta clonazepam lorqzepam lunesta sometimes: gabapentin yeah. my body has been ravaged. and it’s not because im lazy. it’s not by choice. i chose to keep taking risperidsl at 15-16 despite the insane weight gain because prior to taking that drug i was off the fucking chain, in and out of jail and mental hospitals, and headed for one short-ass, miserable life. that pill (and getting me off the other pills i was on) saved my life. these are my choices. and i am not alone. rx drugs can ravage your body, can destroy your sleep cycle, and can even make you binge eat while you’re still sleeping. and today in 2025, everyone is on rx drugs. which just reason no.1 billion why the, “yeah but it’s seriously your choice to be fat” rhetoric is so mind numbingly grating to hear repeated over and over and over again.

myoclonic epilepsy. it’s a sleep disorder where i have violent, painful muscle spasms as im trying to fall asleep. sometimes it’s one muscle or one muscle group, other times my entire body jolts and i become the human asterisk. sometimes i have one really bad episode and then i fall asleep, other times im up for hours/never fall asleep without getting up and having another “day” first. the cruelest part is that im so sleep deprived and dead-ass tired/half asleep that i’m essentially never able to just get out of bed and move around so that it will stop. it happens, i feel the pain, i groan, and the next thing i know its already happening again because i immediately started dozing off again after the previous “jerk” as they’re called. in fact myoclonic jerks is the term that i use when i tell people what i have, so that they don’t get confused and think i have epilepsy.

if you really believe that kids from westlake and kids from east 11th street have the same exact opportunity to be healthy/not fat and that it simply comes down to who wants it more, you are a moron. there’s just no way to be nice about this fact.

yeah that’s not at all what’s happened. the only people repeating the same thing over and over are the “being fat is a choice, calories in/calories out” crowd. i’ve given countless examples of why that’s just factually wrong, many of which have nothing to do with me or my own personal experience. my entire point is that all kinds of people everywhere have so so so many circumstances (life related, biology related, or otherwise) beyond mere willpower which make it hard- near impossible to be healthy and/or not fat. at the end of the day there simply always be people who believe that the earth is flat, that their god is the one true god, and that being fat is simply a matter of willpower.

for awhile now i’ve had a great idea for a reality tv show: i take a bunch of healthy, cocky people, force them to live through to closest approximation of my sleep schedule and sleep disorders (have fun spending 6 nights a week enjoying 4-5 hours of mini seizures, followed by a 30 hour day, followed by a 6 hour day, while never waking up or going to sleep at the same time), sprinkle in some sleep paralysis plus whatever we can to simulate the effects of my daily cocktail of benzos, and then have them compete in physical and memory related competitions, have them get jobs working 8-10 hours a day at a local restaurant, and only give them access to food from the local walmart on a limited budget. also, they’ll have a fake family to take care of and feed and cook for. just a very busy life with very little time to focus solely on your health. watching these formerly healthy people completely break down mentally and physically would be something that i think most of america would love to watch. i’ll make sure that the experts in this thread get first dibs on being cast. can’t wait to watch you guys suddenly “choose” to be fatter and less healthy.

so many responses, none of them actually proving that being fat is a choice. countless excuses as to why there are exceptions, but always falling back to the asinine idea that being fat is simply a choice.

also, i had a buddy who showed me this reality show a bunch of years back. it only lasted one season and was on some niche channel, so i doubt many here have seen it, but the premise of a show was that they were going to pair up a fatty with a personal trainer- but the PT had to gain 30-40 lbs beforehand and lose the weight with the fatty. i only watched one episode, but the PT was just a cockier version of everyone in this thread in the beginning. just talking shit about how “simple” it all is. then they made him gain weight. this dude’s life got turned upside down. his blood sugar was all fucked up, he was always either angry or sad, he had no energy to do the things he loved to do, and his actual marriage got seriously affected terribly because he was such a hormonal POS to be around. the dude was literally crying at the breakfast table, and he wasn’t even *that* obese, plus he still had his foundation to build off of. but that’s something we don’t talk about, or realize- once you get fat, there’s a whole host of issues that make it so much harder than “just watch your calories in/calories out”. it’s like sleep depriving yourself and then telling yourself to stay awake at the wheel during a cross country road trip. it’s not about will power, it’s about biology, physiology, science. you wouldn’t “choose” to fall asleep at the wheel any more than you’d “choose” to not lose weight. but hey and still, the armchair scientists in this thread will persist with their “it’s a choice” BS.

i have a friend who’s been an alcoholic since he was 15. he drinks every single day, often heavily, and eats nothing but garbage. he also takes pills recreationally, and has been known to binge eat. guy hasn’t gained a pond since he was 15. is he choosing to remain slim? does he have more will power than the fatty who doesn’t do any of those destructive behaviors but struggles to lose weight/fat? when we look at him and the menopausal woman who just can’t seem to slim down despite watching her diet, exercising, and never drinking alcohol, y’all are really gonna sit there and tell me we’re looking at a man with a will power and a weak minded fatty? the arm chair scientists and their self assuredness in this thread blows me away. as if every single person on earth has the exact same body that plays by the exact same rules. remarkable.
  11. zero votes for steph or larry. that’s surprising. last was my third behind mj and kd.

  16. i wish i still had the screenshot from TOS where i came home from a Texas game and i had 108 unread pm’s asking for a stream of the game.
  17. the broadcast map that showed abc squiggling down into bandera with some random big 10 game was one of the ~5 best posts from the HF era. also, i do miss tpe, and would love to know if he’s still as passionate about UT Hoops as he once was, and what he thinks about sean miller. he really was a great contributor to the HF Hoops board.
  18. holy shit, you just unearthed a memory for me. i can see the screenshot of it in my head perfectly. hilarious. thank you.

i’ve been on rx drugs where i chased that purple dragon all night long, but then ive also had drugs (benzos/anti anxiety) that seem to take me from “im totally full and satisfied, i just had a big meal”, to, “i think i should make some macaroni and cheese with pizza rolls in it” in about half an hour. rx drugs are some powerful shit.

i do not claim to know or understand the science behind this, but from talking to my dietician i’ve learned that beyond just the empty calories, there’s something in alcohol that has an effect on the calorie burning chain of events, and that imbibing more or less moves fat even further towards the back of the line when it comes to what the body will burn for energy. so, from my own anecdotal experience, i feel like there are people who drink whose metabolism is still pretty kickass, and when they quit drinking they just get back the empty calories. and then there are the people whose metabolism was affected by the drinking, and when they quit drinking they just shed pounds for 2-3 straight months because of the reduction in calories, the improved metabolism, and the assumed reduction in food calories/binge eating from no longer getting drunk.

this is such a huge deal. for me this is bacially the entire deal. every time i’ve turned my health around i’ve basically been a jolly, happy-go-lucky robot who lives every day by the same routine. if people who want to lose weight/get healthy have things preventing them from keeping a routine (unstable work hours, kids, in my case severe sleep issues) it makes the entire process almost undoable. there’s never been a time where i lost a significant amount of weight/improved my health without adhering to a daily routine. which again, is another example of losing weight not being as simple as, “just choose to do it.”
