The sun looks like a black hole, at least to me. It just looks completely wrong and impossible. The brightness of everything is just broken. It is hard to explain until you see it yourself.

Bingo.  I was in one of the longest totality zones and the sun/moon seemed incredibly close but I was staring at a giant black disk in the sky.  Maybe the sun/moon have varying sizes depending on where you're at but it looked like a huge black hole.

We listened to The Daily on the way out there and "Mr Eclipse" was talking about how impactful his first total eclipse was on the rest of his life. I honestly thought it was a little much and maybe he was just a wackadoodle. Nope. I get it now. All three of my kids really enjoyed it too. My middle son is skeptical of pretty much everything and I could tell leading up to today that he was happy to get out of school and was humoring me with his interest, but that shit went out the window the moment totality hit.

I see that now.  This was my first and it was breathtaking.  The crowd audibly gasped.  Some cheered.  A woman next to me "My God.  Look at it.  It's awesome."

Easily one of my top 5 experiences ever.

you could pick any team in the league, get rid of all five starters, and the remaining bench players would beat uconn like red headed step children.

A G league team would beat UConn by at least 25.

She's nothing new. Back when I had a buzz-cut from OCS, randos would see me in civilian dress and assume I was a skinhead. They'd talk, oh how they'd talk.

tldr/ your local locksmith thinks Hitler had no choice. Get a buzzcut, he'll tell you about it.

I had a plumber like that.  While I don't have a buzzcut, he became comfortable enough to tell me about how the Holocaust was faked and "the blacks" were taking over the country.  Seemed like a nice guy before that.  Great plumber.  I thought about kicking him out but he had my sink in pieces.  Then I pondered the odds of getting a non racist plumber in Arkansas and then I let it go.

At least the temperature varies a little here and there in TX. I’m not saying it’s great, because it most definitely sucks, but there’s a smidge of variety.

Which JW Marriott? Desert Ridge or Camelback Inn? I ask because Desert Ridge has a big water park and can be overrun with kids. Cool if you have kids, but not so cool if you don’t.

Also, small warning, summer rates at the resorts can have a side effect of bringing out a different clientele than you see during the season. The wife and I were at the Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain one summer 5-6 years ago sitting by the pool when a group rolled in a cooler full of glass bottles and a boombox. The GM admitted to me that they had overshot the discounts that summer and lo and behold the next summer the rates were substantially higher.

JW at Camelback.  Did not think about lower rates and the riff raff.  Saw some rates there for $300/night in July.  I wonder if that would still weed them out?

The monotony wears on you after three months of stifling heat. It’s the same day after day after day. I loved living in AZ and would move back (my wife might disagree), but I find the TX summers to be slightly less taxing since there’s a little bit of variety. That said, unless you’re in someplace like Montana or the PNW, summers at this point suck in the sunbelt.

Texas has variety in the summer?  Are you talking about the two days where it might rain?

But yes, summers seem to suck everywhere now.

We’re thinking about going out there in the summer and staying at the JW Marriott or something on the summer rates and see how bad it is.

I’ll check in with you September 1st.

    About that.....

We know some people that live in Scottsdale.  They said the summer really isn't that bad.  Wake up early, do whatever, nap in the afternoon, and then go back out at night.  (They're 55 and retired so there's that.)

    How true is that?

It’s Scottsdale and not fucking close. I don’t understand a lot of the previous answers.

I dont know who these bored married Mormons are that keep trying to make Chandler a thing unless you are a pool parts manufacturer that keep you close to them, but you’ll end up in a throuple where the kid calls you “buddy”.

Gilbert is fun in a “once a month” kind of way as a change up. Married people love Dierks Bentley bars.

This seems oddly specific with the details.

    Go on....

Today's generation of students are simply apt pupils.

    • Many of the adults around them view public schools as fatally flawed guvment bullshit
    • Those adults elect other adults who view public schools similarly
    • Those elected officials hire other adults to administer schools from a pool of people who view public schools similarly
    • Those administrators ensure the school lives up to their expectation of being fatally flawed guvment bullshit

How are kids supposed to take school seriously when the adults around them don't?

The kids can just stay at home and "do their own research."

I think he also had another -56 or something.  Granted, that's a team effort but jeez.  I wasn't a huge fan of his in the draft.  Undersized but athletic PG who can't shoot very well.  Granted, he could get better but still....

One of the other issues that hasn't been as covered is that you have to go to the gym while taking them as it is not just fat you are losing but muscle. So you may find yourself down 20lbs but also super weak etc due to muscle loss. I am seeing some studies finally coming out that highlight how problematic this is.

That's my understanding.  (I'm not a doctor or a trainer but I've read some articles and listened to a few podcasts.)

The initial weight loss is both fat and muscle but when you stop taking it, you almost instantly gain the weight back but all in fat.  That's problematic because as you get older (think 40's and 50's, not 70's and 80's), you start to lose muscle mass anyway and you need to work to maintain for old age.  You can say while on the drugs, you could hit the gym and lift but I'd say 99% of the people on the drug aren't exactly hitting the gym.
