Dick Butkus RIP

Dick Butkus and Bob Lilly were my childhood heroes. He was such a badass; it’s too bad his knees were subjected to the same barbaric surgeon as Gale Sayers.

The role of the middle LB was so different in the 4-3 of the 60’s vs from the 90’s onward. Your MLB had to be the defensive QB calling signals and the blitzes. They had to be a primary run stopper plus able to cover a TE and the middle zone. Butkus excelled at the mental element and the physical. Many played single platoon so had experience in high school and college on both sides.

There were so many great ones back then. Sam Huff, chuck Bednarik, Bill Bergen, Nobis, leeroy Jordan, Joe Schmidt, Jack lambert, Willie Lanier are just a few of them.

That explains the Bears win last night.

Damn. I just figured he would sack the Grim Reaper and live forever.

A lot of people have this confusion. It's Ditka that will outlive us all. His stare alone prevents the Reaper from getting too close.
