They really furked it on the 3-2-1 strategy. A petabyte is a shitload of data, but goddamn it's not THAT much. I've got 48TB of RAID storage, and that was just under a grand. A State could put together an offsite backup solution ricky-tick. Hell, get a Starcraft player on it to micromanage and it'll be done in record time

I've got a 24TB RAID setup in my house for stuff I give a shit about (I also have a 2x12TB RAID setup for basically scratch disks/downloads/etc. that I don't care about), but my most important stuff (family photos, work, etc.) are also backed up to a few different services.  And occasionally I back up my local data to a couple of large drives and store those elsewhere (away from my house).

It's pretty insane how much they are struggling to recover. I would also imagine that if they have over 900 people working to restore stuff, that they are getting in each other's way.

When we opened up the business, quite a few years ago - 1 guy made a backup every Friday and took it home.  Brought the previous week's to work on Monday and put it on top of the server.  Worst case, we'd lose a week of work.  Ah, the simple days.
