I like it. I’m tired of the “We’re Texas, we don’t do that” type attitude that’s infested this fan base and athletic department for too long. I want more of the “We’re Texas, we aren’t going to take your shit.” Beard walking away = Texas country club Beard coming back = We are Texas, and we are here to fuck you up. Don’t forget it. We won’t be punked, bitchass bitch.21 points

Is it possible that we stay the course on this discussion as we were doing for the past few weeks? I, for one, don’t want this going CR. Maybe folk can create a CR version in that space provided. Thanks in advance.18 points

As someone who flew enough last year to keep his 1k status with United, let me say I've yet to see any of these incidents in real life, which I'm grateful for. Maybe us United flyers are just better sheep, I dunno, but I'm grateful. And Fuck Cruz for this. Terrorists should be on the no fly list, and these people who are creating terror on airplanes, no matter the fucking reasons, shouldn't be on planes. If casinos can get together and blacklist unruly/cheating customers across all casinos, why shouldn't airlines be able to do the same thing? Fuck these people. Calm down and behave or learn the train schedules. Fucking Republicans are trying to remove all repercussions of asshole behavior because they know that they've cornered the market on assholes come election time.16 points

Trying to open the door of an airplane mid-flight to bring attention to a political cause seems like a textbook example of terrorism to me. It doesn’t really matter if your cause is removing the infidels from Mecca or removing a tiny cloth from your fat face. Being unruly and fighting beleaguered flight attendants because of your psychotic and unhinged political beliefs probably isn’t terrorism, but when your argument stands on whether or not violent, antisocial behavior is technically terrorism, you’re on pretty shaky ground.15 points

I don’t agree with this at all. Chris Beard is plenty quick witted. This wasn’t about showcasing his repartee. This was about confronting one individual who felt like he could say whatever he wanted without consequence. When confronted, the kid couldn’t back it up. He just got that deer in a headlights look cowards of all sorts get in that situation. All of you people chastising Beard, or saying he needs to talk to the PR department need to get over yourselves. Beard didn’t get involved in fisticuffs. As noted, he was direct and challenging, but he wasn’t bowing up. He wanted to see if that kid was willing to stand by his words when directly confronted about it. He got his answer. None of us are going to change the world in any kind of demonstrable way. Not you, me, or Chris Beard, even. But letting bad actors get away with shitty behavior allows them the feeling of more and more entitlement. I like that Beard held one person accountable for their behavior, even if it was in a small way, with a tiny gesture. If more of us were willing to stand up to bad actors the human race would be better off.15 points

And that’s it in a nutshell. They give a shit and do the right thing if it impacts them personally. But they don’t give a fuck about anyone else’s wife or baby. THEN politics are paramount. Fuck ‘em.15 points

I don't understand that take at all. The fundamental purpose--arguably the sole purpose (at least the Germans would certainly argue it's the sole purpose)--of Nato is the collective-security covenant set forth in Article V. An attack on one member is an attack on all other members. Ukraine isn't a member. So Nato isn't directly implicated. If anything, this has shown the value of Nato. I mean, there's a reason why membership is far more popular in Finland and Sweden than it has been since . . . maybe ever? I mean, there's a reason why Putin is about to invade Ukraine and not Estonia, and it has nothing to do with hot Ukrainian chicks (Estonian are hotter). It has everything to do with the fact that an attack on Estonia is the same as an attack on the United States, which would be met with "massive retaliation."12 points

Guy walks into the Dixie Chicken and orders a beer. Bartender turns around, sizes him up, and say, "You aren't from around here, are you?" Guy replies, "Nope!" "Well, what do you do?", asks the bartender. "I'm a taxidermist.", the man replies. "Taxidermist? What is that? You drive taxis?" the bartender asks. The man replies, "No, I mount animals." The bartender exclaims to the bar's regulars, "It's ok, fellas. He's one of us."12 points

It's just geography. Russia has large petroleum deposits. Central Europe has none. But it's not just petroleum and natural gas. Any modern manufacturer needs aluminum, titanium, nickel, and copper. Germany has none of that; Russia has it in abundance. This isn't a new state of affairs. It goes back about a century to the 1920s when the world's economies broadly began switching from coal-fired steam power to petroleum-fueled internal-combustion engines. This is the situation Germany faced in 1940. Embroiled in an ongoing war with the British Empire that, contrary to Hitler's expectations and fervent desires, seemed to have no end in sight, Germany was beholden to the Soviet Union for the raw materials necessary to prosecute the war. And it wasn't just petroleum. It was everything from aluminum to build Messerschmitts to ammonium nitrate to fertilize the Reich's fields. But above all, it was petroleum. German did have an alternative source for petroleum in 1940--Romania. And Romania was allied with Germany. But what happened in 1940? The Soviet Union put the screws to Romania. It conquered Bukovina and Bessarabia and began trying to foment a Communist insurrection. And there was really nothing Germany could do about it. And that led to the question, why would one be Germany's ally when Germany can't protect its allies? So Germany had a choice--it could either (1) continue the present state of affairs, in which the Soviet Union had a chokehold on its supply of raw materials, enabling Stalin to expand Soviet influence and territory through Eastern and Central Europe at Germany's expense (probably reaching a point at some point in the not distant future where the Soviet Union would be able to dictate policy to Germany or overthrow the Nazi government entirely and replace it with a puppet regime) or (2) go get those raw materials through an invasion of the Soviet Union. We know what choice the Germans took in 1941. And it's not a choice that is any longer on the table. But the state of affairs persists--Russia has a chokehold on Germany's supply of raw materials. There are choices that Germany could have made since 1949 that might reduce that chokehold. Perhaps it could have built more LNG terminals at Hamburg and Bremerhaven. Perhaps it could have invested in copper mines in Chile and built a logistics network to facilitate transit of Chilean copper to German factories. But Germany is a capitalist country, and capitalism just isn't good at sacrificing near- and medium-term profit for (speculative) long-term security.11 points

A couple of things that I have swirling through my head.... One of my big hang ups on going to AA is that my Dad was a regular attendee. He was always looking to help/fix someone else for the control and ego boost it gave him. He is not the only person in AA that I know like that. I know deep down that is not the case for all AA attendees but it's always left a bitter taste in my mouth. I also understand the strong spirituality (and not solely) religious aspect of it. I was raised in a very religious family. I shed being religious in college but still have a spiritual side. I have never fully been able to stop believing in something bigger than myself. I don't know what that is and I don't even particularly care. It brings me peace being on a hike and feel that serenity of being surrounded by beauty. Or when I am spending time with my family. We just got back from Disney World and even thought it was a beating we had fun and the Macanudo-ettes enjoyed themselves and we did it as a family. I guess just going to a meeting can't hurt but worry that my inner negativity about it will sabotage me. I try not to be judgmental of others because I don't know their circumstances but I do it all the same some times. I know that for a long time I justified my drinking because it wasn't as bad as someone else's (allegedly.) But really, it has been. Just because I've never wrecked a car or gotten a DUI doesn't mean I haven't gotten behind the wheel entirely too many times when I should not have. Hell, I can't count the number of times I've gotten a fountain drink and then poured liquor in it or grabbed a tall boy for the ride. Or that because I've never trashed a room or hurt someone physically doesn't mean that I wasn't hurtful in emotional ways. I work from home now (I have been since March 2020) and really enjoy that because I get so much more time back rather than spending 90-120 minutes commuting every day. But it has also allowed me to have A LOT of alone time. I'm not even at double digit days or even more than 100 hours since my last drink. As of now it's only been 3 full days. I absolutely can not deny that the thought of "just one" has crept into my head. One of the things I have to remember is how I feel in the morning waking up sober. I don't usually get big hangovers but would feel emotionally drained and then have to worry about what I might have said or done the day before. And even if I had not said anything particularly stupid, dumb or hurtful, I have definitely stumbled around the house and slurred words or been incomprehensible. That has take a toll on everyone around me and affected all of my relationships. I appreciate the space to come over here and just spew. I'm an open book in some ways to my friends and family. I am very outgoing and have never met a stranger but my inner thoughts aren't always as easy to share with even my closest friends or family members.10 points

Dude. I am going to challenge you to do something. And that is, quit citing the usual right-wing sources for your material. You may find it there, but if you can, find another source for the information like AP or Reuters, or even fucking CNN or MSNBC and see how the information is reported and see whether the right wing spin is accurate or proper. Here, for example, is a rational conservative libertarian site that explains that the incident in question had nothing to do with transgenders. https://reason.com/2021/11/01/conservatives-wrongly-portrayed-the-loudoun-county-sexual-assault-as-a-transgender-bathroom-issue/ In fact, the victim and assaulter had a prior relationship and had fucked in the bathrooms at school before. It wasn't some random "tranny" going into the girls room to tear off a piece. Also, the father was arrested at a school board meeting for being a jackass. Perhaps understandably, somewhat, but he was subsequently convicted of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, so he wasn't "silenced" by the school board as many right wing sites would have you believe. Now, it does appear that the school district initially tried to treat this sexual assault as an internal discipline matter. That's not good, but it isn't the first time that's happened in a school. And, it's not a cover-up. Schools and the juvenile court system operate differently than the adult systems, with confidentiality of the indentity of even the perpetrator as a priority.9 points

ok i am just catching up on this thread, and really can't get past this section. i love it when he plays his hits. so let's break it down. -everyone is coming after me and those who do work for me -every accusation is a confession, as he loves to threaten, harass, and insult others -exaggeration, hyperbole, etc -according to trump, they were involved in a decades-long audit, but because it's associated with trump, it is obviously great -anyone coming after him (or doing their job) is obviously crooked and not playing by the rules (accusation, confession) -everyone is political except him, he's just an honest, hard working businessman -if you've ever lost an election, you're a failure, and that's the lowest on the trump rating scale, and therefore this person cannot be trusted -hillary clinton name-check, everybody drink -lock her up -hillary controls the da's office in manhattan because she must because why else would anyone come after trump? -it's always about crime (scare tactics) -again, the hyperbole. there can't just be crime, it has to go beyond to "levels not even thought possible" -i've seen batman movies, lots of crime levels have been contemplated -most killings are probably vicious, but ok -super relevant to an accounting firm -china is bad -those dems love to release criminals out onto the streets where they will undoubtedly commit more vicious crimes shortly -murder is bad, other crimes are also bad, and there's only crime in big cities run by dems -"through the roof" is vague but i'll allow it -i don't even need him to show his work because 100 is such a nice round number so i'm good here, no hyperbole -democrats are bad and if they're in office, they cannot be trusted to do their jobs honestly, this one is easy -it's always about wasting the taxpayers time and money - witch hunts are so exhausting, and should not be allowed to happen -it's always about him -"get trump" in quotes suggests an actual quote, but attributable to nobody in particular -hillary clinton, drink -these attorneys are so devoted to getting trump that they have left their cushy jobs to assist the political loser da -viciously, seems like a weird characteristic of this situation, but ok -i'm starting to think he doesn't understand how quotation marks work -if someone is against him, they are not only left, but radical left -they would only go after him if they hated him already, clearly -media is the enemy of the people -he only knows about 8 adjectives and he's already used 4, so the rant must be almost over -insults, threats, accusations, confessions -everybody is out to get me, which means they hate me, which means they are not credible -things takes time when there's significant stalling and pushback and obfuscation -so wait, are you following the rules, or did they wait too long to find the infractions? because those are two different things -if she got elected, she must've been doing something bad -referring to himself in the 3rd person -quotation marks, sigh9 points

do y'all know how high Beard's adrenaline was running in that moment, *before* the OU dork popped off at him? i think he handled it just about perfectly all things considered. he calmly walked over, looked the kid in the eyes, made his point, then turned around and rejoined his team and forgot all about it within five seconds. i love seeing that, and i'm certain that his players and recruits do too. he's not acting like a half cocked dickhead who is untethered, but he's also not going to let you just run your mouth to him with zero consequences and repercussions. you not just gone take Chris Beard's cornbread.9 points

Spend one month only using AP, Reuters, BBC, and the PBS News Hour for your news. Then go back to whatever sources you used before and see how absurd they look. CNN is a few rungs below the Craig Kilborn-era Daily Show; Fox aspires to be at the top of NowThis’ bookmarks. The daily-whatevers, Oanns, etc. look like the Onion writers turned to meth. News should be boring because most of it is. If it isn’t boring or is constantly making you angry, it isn’t news.8 points

Hey, remember the bullshit story about “countermeasures” and the U.S. submarine that @FartingMonk called out as bullshit? Yeah, it’s bullshit. One of my persistent bugbears is the way the Western press reports on things the Russians say in the old-school journalist neutrality style. “The Russian MOD says X, a Pentagon spokesperson says Y.” It’s really high time to stop reporting on things Russians say— particularly anything defense related— until there is some sort of independent confirmation. Otherwise, you’re just a conduit for weaponized information.8 points

Racism aside, 4th gen nuclear reactors have much better safety mechanisms and passive safety than Fukushima's gen II reactor. We just haven't built any new reactors in meaningful numbers since Chernobyl. I'm really optimistic for modern nuclear tech, it's our best carbon-neutral/negative energy source available. It's still just fucking nuts to me how opposed the German people (apparently) are to nuclear power. It's an unusually emotional position for them to stake out8 points

It's useful to recall that the real catalyst that started all this was when the people of Ukraine rioted and eventually deposed their corrupt, Russia-backed oligarch of a president who refused to sign the European Union–Ukraine Association Agreement, whose purpose was to bring the country's economics and politics in-line with EU standards and eventually lead them to be a fully "Westernized" country. That, I think, is what Putin fears more: a free and prosperous Slavic country on his nation's border that could serve as an inspiration for the Russian people. What's going on now is just a continuation of that struggle. There was no recent, sudden movement on Ukrainian joining NATO culminating in this crisis. It's just a flimsy excuse, because he's already got two NATO-backed Baltic neighbors on his border and he knows full-well there's no way they are a threat of military invasion. This whole thing is just a continuation of Putin's ongoing efforts to fuck with Ukraine, which includes his previous annexation of Crimea and ongoing military support of separatists in the two eastern oblasts. The bottom line is he wants to further destabilize the country and is weighing whether it's worth it to invade. If Putin ends up truly backing off, it's because he'll have learned that if he fucks around too much, he'll certainly find out.8 points

Sure. So it's groovy to needlessly pay for well over $100k of healthcare for someone who could have avoided it with a shot that costs around $35.
