Totalitarianism is when someone gases his constituents so he can take a photo op in front of a church. When one tries to stay in power after losing a legitimate election by falsely alleging, ad nauseum, that said election was rigged, and then tries to exert political pressure on officials to give him the election, and when that doesn’t work, foments actual violence against those officials. Who has done that recently? Why is that not disturbing to you?21 points

Seriously. Every day, I wake up, sit down with a cup of coffee, come to Surly and read up on all the towed tanks and dead Russian's courtesy of @MillerEP. Dude needs a tip jar button on his posts.19 points

Why don't you get back to us when the leader of the left falls on the wrong side of an election and decides he/she doesn't really want to vacate the office, calls the election unfair and then directly fuels his backers to stage a violent insurrection with the aim of derailing forever the peaceful transfer of power in this country. Until then, you can kindly shut the fuck up with this "both sides are terrible" mealy-mouth bullshit. Pretty please. With sugar on top.18 points

Okay back on subject. Too many gaping vaginas in here right now…. This board needs a injection of sunshine. QB- Biggest QB recruit since VY. May bust out but every coach that has seen him play has drooled over him. If he busts, Sark’s career is basically done and we will probably be a laughing stock perception wise. Anyways, I will just go ahead and believe the these camp coaches and scouts that say he can make every throw and has been compared to Patrick Mahomes when it comes to arm talent. I’m going full blown drinking the koolaid that this kid is special like Bijan is special. RB: Best RB in the country and best RB room in the country. WR: We have 2 forsure NFL WRs 3 and done players in Neyor and Worthy. Worthy is a 4.4 guy at worst and most likely a 4.3 guy if my eyes aren’t lying to me. Neyor is a 4.4 guy. Apparently JWhit is back and better than ever and we’ve seen what he can do in the 2 games he playe a year. I’m going to keep drinking the koolaid and say he plays half a season this year. If Brennan Thompson can show up and run some routes and catch more than he drops…. This WR room is going to be a nightmare for defenses. Very good chance we’re looking at 3 future NFL WRs. How many teams can say their 3 starters are pro prospects right now with scouts? TE: J’Tavian Sanders is apparently focused and ready to kick some ass. Apparently he an athletic freak with strong hands. Let’s see if Banks can get this former 5 star player that dominated in high school in a competitive district live up to his potential. OL: my only kool aid here is I’m praying Kyle Flood can get these freshman ready and prove why he’s so highly regarded as an OL coach. There’s some serious talent coming in and if this OL can even get 25% better… this offense is probably going to be one of the best on the country. Ewers strength is his deep ball and we have two players in Neyor and Worthy to stretch the field. I imagine we’re going to be dead set on pounding the rock and going deep. So many times I saw players wide open only for Card/Thompson to whiff our terrible WRs like Marcus Washington and Josh Moore drop pass after pass. I’m pretty excited to watch this offense… the defense….. however…. Will be hot garbage. Not even going to bother discussing it.15 points

Reminders for practice reports today: 1) Omit any mentions of Card, @BurntOrange&White gets upset when he sees his name 2) Anything positive mentioned about a defensive player is sunshine and should not be believed 3) Anything positive mentioned about the offensive line is sunshine and should not be believed. Our 5 guys couldn't start at St. Edwards. 4) Anything positive mentioned about the defensive line is because of the offensive line 5) Anything positive mentioned about the punter or kicker is because they aren't in a live game environment and shouldn't be believed 6) Anything positive mentioned about the linebackers is because they know our offensive playbook and shouldn't be believed 7) Anything mentioned about Bijan or Worthy can be believed. Am I missing anything?14 points

Russia is losing their best people and machines, with limited ability to replace either. They are leveling cities in fits of impotence, since they cannot advance and take them. Russia cannot, in any meaningful way, win this war.14 points

Political and social action that opposes forms of facism doesn’t amount to totalitarianism. It just so happens the entirety of GOP governance and behavior is rooted in fascist thought and the furtherance of white supremacy. For that, each GOPer deserves scorn and ridicule for supporting (to whatever degree) these idealogical pathways. You sit back and cheerlead a despot that has given comfort to all the enemies of this nation, ginned up an attack on the seat of democracy during election certification, and overall just shat all over everything because he could. For that, you and your ilk should be cancelled, minimized, wokeified, or whatever synonym for victimization that you pussies are going with this week. I don’t give a dry camel fuck how it makes snowflakes like you feel. Fuck your feelings. Dems may be ineffective and infuriating at times, but at the very least they aren’t working toward rolling back every social advancement that has been pushed through for the last half century.12 points

Gerrymandering. It's gerrymandering that gets us worse and worse results because the districts are polarized into +23 point safe zones for both sides so we get more extremes. They need to go the other way to the +/-5% zone all the way around. Make the districts using population and geographic cohesiveness (compact, following rivers, major roads or political entity boundaries like city or county lines). Race, age, religion, education level, income, political bent, union membership, etc. are factors that should not be included in drawing the lines. Just population density and geographic cohesiveness. This is never going to happen now that the Supreme Court is throwing out any attempt to stop the Gerrymandering.12 points

Hell, I could have personally verified that if you asked. this here tank: which is an M4 that is on trophy display outside the 25th infrantry division Museum in Scoffied Barracks Hawaii had its underside hatch open my entire 4 years of being there in 84-88 I cant tell you how many times I snuck under the tank (dont remember the chains being there), slid along the concrete to get inside. I sat in that turret and drivers seat and played dead nazis pew pew pew a lot. they clearly restored it since the mid 80s because it was OD green and rusty as fuck when I played in it. And I wasnt the only kid that did that. I only found out about the secret hatch from another kid at some point.10 points

Poland hates Russia, mostly because Russia has crapped on them for 400 years. They're part of NATO now, and know they have the backing of the World's most powerful military (us). And now they see how weak Russia is and yeah, they wanna get in on that. Think of the dorky kid in HS who got picked on by everyone. 10 years later comes to the reunion. Spent the last decade lifting weights, banging 10's and taking his tech IPO public. He's gonna be looking for revenge.10 points

This. That said, I'd bet if you took care of the gerrymandering problem - pols getting to choose their own constituencies - you'd solve the term limits question.10 points

Ukrainian #1: Go home! You will die here, for this is our home, and we will kill you or die to protect it! Russian Mercenary: I cannot, for I am a mercenary -- a professional soldier whose allegiance is to the highest bidder. Ukrainian #2: Professional soldier, eh? Russian Mercenary: Yes. Ukrainian #3: You're a temp. Russian Mercenary (annoyed): I am a professional soldier whose allegiance is to the highest bidder! Ukrainian #4: Perhaps if you do a good job, Putin will hire you full time. Russian Mercenary: I SAID I AM NOT A TEMP! I... * The Russian's head explodes from a gunshot delivered from Ukrainian #5* Ukrainian #5: Shut the fuck up, temp.9 points

Yeah, there is a lot of ugly stuff surrounding this that has been a subject of a ton of controversy for years here. And it has gotten even worse over the past week, where almost every major daily has run stories about Azov and its less-than-savory elements. But for clarity, no one here outside of the extremist fringes on each side believes the problem is so bad in Ukraine that it justifies/mitigates the moral bankruptcy/criminality of Putin's invasion. However, I do think if Putin would have limited is actions to the Donbass it would not have triggered nearly the reaction that it has here, as the Germans essentially viewed the Donbass issue as an Azov vs. Separatist issue and were prepared to look the other way. Just another example of huge miscalculation on Putin's part. And as background, a lot of the attention to this issue within Germany over the past years has been self-inflicted by the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Andrij Melnyk, who has made Germany's support of Ukraine much more difficult politically. One of the first things he did when he became ambassador was to take a highly visible and highly promoted trip to the grave of Stepan Bandera here in Munich - over the very loud objections of the Merkel government - at which time he attempted to rehabilitate Bandera from Nazi-collaborator/antisemitic war criminal to "Hero of Ukraine" while standing in the middle of Munich, which of course has significance in German culture as the birthplace of the National Socialist movement. This infuriated the Bundestag, which then formally restated the genocidal acts of Bandera against Jews and Poles and reaffirmed the German position that Bandera was a war criminal who colluded with the Nazis to exterminate Poles and Jews. I remember when it happened and the entire political spectrum in Germany essentially, did a collective "What the fuck?" headscratch as to why he thought this was such a necessary move as ambassador to the country that was essentially bankrolling Ukraine's existence at the moment, particularly in light of the 2014-2015 events. It was really ugly. People here didn't (and still don't) really understand that that era for Ukrainians was complex, with Nazis on one side and Soviets on the other...so the nuance of "allies-by-convenience" re Ukrainian nationalism is easily lost for modern Germans, who are understandably trained to knee-jerk strongly against anything that could be seen as excusing/justifying Nazi atrocities. So this creates fertile ground for the Russians wrt Azov and the neonazi narrative. Ever since that time, the relationship between the German government and Melnyk - and therefore by extention Ukraine - has been absolutely terrible...and the stage was set for repeated public discussions about Azov and its ties with neonazi movements within Germany like Der III Weg and the NPD. Which did, in fact, occur regularly on public media...stories on the ZDF showing the Azov regalia, and quoting its founder, Biletsky, etc, which was pretty severe stuff, and documenting ties between the worst elements of German neonazism and Azov, etc. Melnyk through this and a variety of other regular invocations of Germans-as-Nazis helped inject the issue into the national discourse, which in a perverse way only resulted in amplifying the Russian propaganda narrative, which definitely caught on across party lines. This basically gave the Russian propaganda high-octane fuel to embed into German political coverage, which was then exploited by the Russians and by Putinverstehers in various parties. We are seeing the attempted unwinding of this phenomenon now. So that said, the information environment on this topic in Germany is very different than it is elsewhere, as the environment here is obviously quite different when it comes to Nazi-era topics. But again, no one here views this is as justification for what has gone on, and given the brutality of this war, most people now understand that less-than-desirable people are going to end up with German weapons, and that is a price that Putin's actions have caused. Melnyk's history as ambassador here was subject to a write-up on this yesterday in the Frankfurter Rundschau (which is an established paper traditionally associated with the SPD government), where you can get an idea of the tone of the debate:9 points

There's practical politics, and there's this. Whether Felito would have preferred a more high-minded approach to political power at some point is irrelevant. He has, in fact, willingly chosen to dance to the beat that he dances to. And he dances like a motherfucker. Politics is a nasty business in terms of pandering and other corruptions. I have always believed that and generally been repulsed by politicians. But what Cruz and his ilk are doing is absolutely beyond the pale. He could quit at any time, but he fucking loves it. I think he likes twattering and the power he gains from it more than being a lawyer. In my pollyannaish world, I wish more politicians would "do the right thing" and appeal to the higher nature of Americans. I get that the vast majority of them don't do that. But not all of them actively whip the absolute worst tendencies of the American public for their own personal gain. And that's why I don't fuck with the GOP anymore. ADDENDUM: I don't think you're a troll or a bad-faith poster. But a lot of your posts, like the above, have a tendency to try to normalize what the GQP and Trumpists are doing as "politics as usual." I don't think you're trying to be a dick about it, but I suspect you may be struggling to hold on to your "conservative" beliefs in the face of this dogshit.9 points
