  1. This morning I saw a Russian at HEB go into the 10-items-or-under self-checkout lane with 11 items. I killed him. Slava Ukraini.

  2. I’ll say it again, there’s no such thing as Russophobia and no one has proposed any systematic discrimination against Russians. There have been isolated anti-Russian incidents. That happened in Europe against Americans during the Iraq war, too. It’s a shitty way to behave, it’s also going to happen. Those assholes in Berlin were not protesting Russophobia. They’re showing their support for a country engaged in a horrific war of aggression and destruction against a peaceful neighbor. That’s a thinner veneer than “heritage not hate,” use your brains. Also, I’m Orthodox and go to church and celebrate Easter on the wrong day and everything. I won’t go to a parish that commemorates Kiril and plenty of Russian parishes in the U.S. and Europe have reached that conclusion. You can also, you know, just go to a Greek church.

  3. My Ukrainian coworker has been fucking stalwart thorugh this whole thing. She's from Bila Tserkva, which is 40 min SW of Kyiv.. lucky on the geographical scale that they're SW instead of NE. When I first started talking to her about this months ago I looked up the history of her town. They were sacked by Ghengis Khan in the 13th century. They lost 22k from Stalin's famine in 1932.. They had their entire Jewish population murdered by the Nazis in 1941. This is a town of 200k. That's a little bit smaller than Lubbock, a little bit bigger than Waco. This little city has a history that dwarfs anything we have. Right now they're lucky that they were on the west side of the Dneiper to get the treatment that Bucha had. Her whole family is still there. I want to chat with her every day about the shit I read here but I know she won't have the same enthusiasm I have about Bayraktar videos because she's probably just exhausted thinking about all of it. Anyways.. there were a few weeks there where I was gonna be asking you fucks for donations to help get her family out. Right now it looks like the orcs wont' be threatening her town for awhile. Let me tell you this. This chick has been through hell as far as worrying about her family for the last month, and she has never not showed up and busted her ass at work - even after we told her she could take as much time off as she needed.

  4. ^That was a whole lot of 3 tweet posts, if it still jacks your phone up let me know, that means it's not the tweets per post, but tweets per page, which means I need to space it out more. Or I can try quoting/spoilering/etc.

  16. Another trophy Russian Sturm-S Modern technical solutions in Orlan, namely: bottle and Canon camera Hatiko from Makarov. For almost a month, Rini, an Akita-inu dog, has been waiting for her owner on the doorstep of a house in Makarov. Volunteers tried to take the dog to the shelter, but she did not want to go there, just took food from them and waited for her family to return.

  17. That comment didn’t age well, did it! I’ve been following the thread, and of course the events outside of here. I had a long post planned referencing Gibbons’ The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, and how he identified one of the issues being that there wasn’t really room for great emperors and generals to coincide. One of the many issues with autocratic rule, regardless of its comparative efficiency in making decisions when compared to representative democracy. When there was a weak emperor and strong military leadership, the leadership would replace the emperor. When there was a strong emperor he made sure to eliminate strong generals who were potential threats. Only rarely could a strong emperor stomach potential rivalries from strong generals, which is when you get someone like Justinian. In any case, this is an issue with both the Russian and the Chinese militaries. Competency is not only not rewarded, it is often discouraged to the point of elimination. So even the most competent military leadership learn to hide their competency. In fairness I first read this in the Foundation trilogy by Asimov when I was a pre teen, but later realized he copied some of his ideas from Gibbons. Not in a bad way, The French election is interesting. I can’t imagine Le Pen winning, but she’s apparently very close. I’m not making the same mistakes I did with Trump and Brexit where I didn’t take seriously the votes going the way they did until they did. That would be a huge wrinkle, and not in a good way.

  18. Actually, a GOP POTUS had the best immigration reform plan of my lifetime: GWB. The GOP made sure it died before it ever got off the ground. That’s when I fully realized that immigration is 1000X more important to the GOP as a topic for demagoguery, vs an issue to actually try to solve. They haven’t sone anything to change that in 20+ years.

  19. Then perhaps they shouldn’t have paraded around Berlin last week flying Russian flags in support of the war. Quietly being an ethnic Russian? No sweat. Flying the flag of a country currently gleefully committing genocide? Not the BEST plan for garnering sympathy.

  20. Pro Demonstration Tip: Leave the fucking Russian flags at home if you don’t want people treating you like shitty Russians supporting the shitty things other Russians are doing under that same flag.

  21. In 3 years of Card being here, he’s never dominated a game or practice and a kid that should still be going to prom right now apparently lit up the scrimmage with the 2nd team OL. This is going to play out like last year but I hope Sark gives Ewers all the first team reps on August and looks for any transfer QB this summer so we can have a capable backup as pretty much everyone is certain Card will transfer. Card played completely scared last year and would just sulk on the bench by himself last season. I’ve watched enough football to know that guys don’t rally behind QBs like that. Start Ewers and let’s try to get him as many reps as possible before conference play.

  26. Except zero people have agreed with a straw man position of “oh, so we should just shit on Russians because they are Russian?” Instead, people had called for “fuck Russia” with respect to Russians that have paraded through Berlin flying Russian flags I support of them war, and are now whining about the consequences. Declare your allegiance to Putin and Russia as it wages a war of genocide….yeah, catch shit.

  28. Russophobia doesn’t exist, the Kremlin made it up to distract attention from their awful behavior. The people who organized the rally in Berlin run social media networks to spread Kremlin propaganda.

  29. I'm speaking about psychology here, something I've devoted my professional life towards. Humans as a species were designed in a fucked up way, or evolved in a fucked up way, most likely to achieve survival of the species in a world and environment that is hostile towards them. Things like rape, murder, and other horrific acts aren't the design or the desired traits of human evolution but are instead unwanted byproducts from traits necessary to survival of the species such as aggression. So no, I wasn't condoning the acts. I was explaining that they're not an issue of Russian genes as the poster I responded to asked. They're a byproduct of human evolution and have been present throughout every army in all of human history and require strong and moral leadership and harsh punishment to curtail. When moral leadership isn't present, as in the case with this Russian army, these atrocities will always occur.

  37. No. Been dealing with some pretty heavy family stuff. My uncle Bill (mentioned him a bunch in the football thread) is back in the hospital again. My cousin, Josh, Bill’s oldest son, killed himself over a week ago and just got back a few days ago from the funeral. Josh was only 35. then my uncle Bill collapsed and fell later that evening. He had just gotten out of the rehabbing place he was in about a week or so before Josh killed himself. We were very close growing up and spent a lot of time together every year until 2020 when Covid made things difficult to travel and see family. Just a gut punch. For everyone. I will never understand why Josh did what he did. None of us can ever wrap our minds around it. Just haven’t felt like posting much. Which I am sure is a relief to some posters. The Ukraine stuff is just painful to watch and read about and I don’t have any new takes. Plus we all pretty much follow all the same Twitter feeds so I don’t have anything helpful to add.
