  1. Update from Berlin: the boy and his friends delivered their food to the refugees at the Hbf today (they made the tacos last Friday, but because there’s a heavy volunteer presence on the weekend, thought that they’d wait to deliver food today when it was needed more. So, they kept the tacos in the fridge and heated them up today to take down there). There’s still a lot of refugees passing through there, day-in, day-out. They had about 100 tacos. He said they were all gone in less than 10 minutes. They walked in the door of the staging area, and were immediately approached by several families. He had written some Ukrainian on his arm so he could say “food,” “you’re welcome,” and to tell them whether the tacos were meat or vegetarian. He said the crowd was very excited to get something with meat. The German volunteer effort has picked up speed, and is now providing hot food, but it’s a simple vegetable soup, so folks wanting something more portable, or something with meat, and were excited to get the option. Here's his arm with the vocabulary he had handy: He told me about the crowd, said it was a lot of families. He kind of choked up a bit when he said “dad….it was a LOT of kids.” When they got there, they were so mobbed just distributing the food that he didn’t have time to capture what the scene was like. He did snap a picture of the reception area they have set up (one of the less crowded parts): And you can see some of the system behind his friends, carrying the now-empty trays and napkins they handed out: His friends came with him to the Hbf this time (he needed the extra hands to carry all the trays of food). He said they got a bit wide-eyed about how much it was appreciated, and on the way back they all concluded they want to do this some more, and scale up operations. Also, they’ll go heavy on tacos with meat, because those were a hot commodity. They all agreed that it’s fun to hang out in the kitchen together for a few hours cooking, and then it takes no time at all to give the food away. He’s only going to be in Berlin a few more weeks, but they expect to do this a few more times now. He asked, and I told him I’d set up some sort of fundraising mechanism so they can turn cash into tacos. At first he suggested a cap, and then said “you know what…..however much people give us, we can turn into hot meals, so we’ll take whatever we can get.” I’ll figure something out and share with anyone interested, probably tonight after I chat with the wife. Just to remind us about some “good stories about human beings,” there are a LOT of folks over there doing a lot of good. From World Central Kitchen, to the ad hoc German volunteers who have set up a whole system to greet and assist arriving refugees, the swell of good people doing good things is big, and real. So, as discouraging as shit is in this literal time of plagues, war, and famine, there’s some twinkling lights shining.

  7. So you know man, saying it once, getting corrected and not continuing to say it is the only thing I ask for, so I'm not going to rake you over the coals for word choice. I've been guilty of poor word choices plenty of times in my life so live and learn. And yes, I had girlfriends all the way up until I broke up with my last one at 24 years old. Up until I got to UT, I was sheltered enough that I thought that all gay people were flamboyant, and I wasn't, so I didn't think it applied to me. I grew up in a time where this don't say gay thing was the norm in all schools, and my friends at UT were just like my friends back home. Being gay was a really really bad thing to be. It was a fucking social death sentence to be out in high school. Hell it was a social death sentence to even be thought to be gay in high school. My experience at UT was the same. Having girlfriends helped to keep any suspicions at bay. Plus I like hanging out with women so aside from the sex part, which I wasn't into, it wasn't a super hardship. When you throw on parental expectations, well..... The reason I think this is so terrible is pretty simple. I already got to grow up in that environment. I already got to see what that environment looks like in practice. I saw that when it's a whispered about topic and never talked about out loud, it becomes a taboo topic that is weird or gross or scary, and things that are weird or gross or scary get separated out and ostracized by their peers. It's a very lonely place to be. For some kids, it's too lonely and will lead to all kinds of problems. Self abuse, self harm, destructive behavior, suicide are all things that are pretty common amongst that cohort. I do not want any future kids to be stuck in that rut because of their sexual orientation. I know that if this bill is effective in the way they want it to be, that will be the effect. And that, to me, is unconscionable. And yes, to be a gold star is to only have had sex with people with whom you are actually attracted. A gold star hetero has only had sex with the opposite sex. A gold star gay has only had sex with other males, and a gold star lesbian has only had sex with other females. I suspect a lot more young people are gold stars today because they don't have to worry about being ostracized to the extent that it was a worry for any kid who thought they might be gay back in the 80's. This law will have the effect of pushing a lot more kids right back into the closet for no good reason at all.

  15. ^I mean if even some of this is true, it's incredible how terrible and widespread morale amongst their forces must be. In the Marines, we always jokingly said stuff like "If a Marine isn't complaining then he's dead," but all in all we were always proud to be doing what we were doing, even when shit sucked a little. Widespread desertion etc. is absolutely unthinkable.

  20. Let me help you out, as this is a hard pill to swallow. The “extreme left” and the “extreme right” aren’t equivalent, at least in the online and IRL spaces you’re following. Let’s put them on a spectrum: 1. Most-extreme left= Stalinism. This does not exist in the United States. No one is calling for the liquidation of landowning peasants as a class or establishing vast networks of prisons for ideological enemies where they are worked to death or for shoving the My Pillow guy into a black panel van for summary execution in the basement of some DHS facility. 2. Most-extreme right= Nazis. My man— these people exist. They’re out there. They have rallies and shit where they shout about Jews. They think Hitler was cool, they want to commit violence against brown people and Jews. The whole fucking ball of wax. The most extreme left in this country is the DSA, which has some truly stupid views on economics and property rights. Or the dread AntiFa, which has done some pretty shitty property crimes (and it should and is illegal/restricted to advocate for that). Oh, and some diversity advocates who get super pissed at you on Twitter. It ain’t the same, the censorship seems one-sided because the extreme right is worse, and the mainstream right is simply chronically unable to stop lying about easily and demonstrably untrue stuff.

  22. Finland was rushing their application and then Sweden came around, so Finland slowed their application down a bit so that they are now doing them in sync, both to make it easier/faster for NATO, and also as a show of unity to Russia and a bit of a security pact on their own.

  29. Anyone who doubts the efficacy of Lend-Lease and tons of Allied materiel (most importantly- logistical, GMC and Studebaker trucks) for Soviet victory in WWII needs to look at this war with Ukraine. Basically, Ukraine is playing the role of USSR in 1941 and that’s why they’re hanging on. And Russia still hasn’t fucking learned their lessons.

  30. There's a lot of material to choose from, but I have to say this is his most hilarious bit. The fake dialogue with the doctors who are blown away by his performance reliably brings the lulz. I like that this time he mixed in the bit about his uncle being the smartest person in history and how that somehow says something about him. He's like one of those pull-string farm animal toys, just repeating the same handful of anecdotes that he can keep sort of straight in his mind. These are going to be truly epic after a couple more years of dementia and Rhonda fully supplanting him in the hearts of the deplorables (I'm sure he'll still be giving speeches to pathetically small crowds to try and keep the grift going).

  31. I don't think that's too uncommon, especially for posters of a certain age. I'm 50yo and one of my best friends from high school came out to me when we were in college. In hs, that guy was pretty popular and even dated the daughter of the preacher of the First Baptist Church which, along with First Methodist, was *the* church to go to. So...let's just say he was dating small West Texas town royalty. He explained it to me later that in high school, he just couldn't come to terms with how he felt internally nor how to reconcile it with our very conservative town. While I can't speak for the gay mafia on this board and realize it's not the exact same situation as to what was described by that poster, I think there's something to the whole "closeted" thing and how some people realize they're in it, some maybe quite don't, and some are just confused. It's been a while, but I've described before my own daughter's struggles with her identify starting from a very young age (4-5 years old). By the 2nd grade, she refused to wear girls clothes and kept her hair cut like a boy. My ex and I didn't make a big deal of it and just let her know that we loved her no matter what. By high school, she felt comfortable enough to tell me she thought she was gay, and that was that. No drama, no trauma. Everything's cool, and we're super close, and I love her, and she'll always know that.
