  7. I have come to a few conclusions based on observations in this thread and elsewhere: 1. Russians are nothing but imbeciles and bullies as a result of purging generations of intellectuals from their population over the past few centuries. 2. Soviet Union wouldn't have been shit without its satellite states Ukraine, Poland, etc 3. They are more likely to nuke themselves than anyone else. I think many underestimate the resources it takes to maintain a functioning nuclear arsenal. From concept to production to maint. to delivery on target. Those idiots can't even maintain a functioning delivery truck. 4. Putin about to get his purge on 5. Georgia should be getting its freak on while it has the chance 6. When it's all said and done Ukraine will emerge as the dominant force, economy, and leader of Europe. 7. Fuck Russia in the babushka ass.

  10. We have two Australian Shepherds, so keeping the wood floors in the house clean is a constant battle. We have a robot vac which helps, but it only does so much. We both contribute to keeping it clean by using the rechargeable vacuum as needed for a couple of minutes a day. This plays out in two different scenarios. Scenario 1: I walk into the room and notice some little fur bunnies on the floor and in the corners of the room. I grab the rechargeable vacuum from the utility room, empty the dustbin into the trash, and proceed to quickly vacuum up the stray dog hairs and blades of dead grass that the dogs track in. I have to do this quickly because the rechargeable vacuum wasn't put back on the charger after the previous use and thus has a only couple of minutes of charge in the battery. I then empty the dustbin into the trash and place the vacuum back on the charger in the utility room. Scenario 2: My wife walks into the room and loudly exclaims "OH MY GOD, these floors are DISGUSTING!" She then proceeds to huff over to the utility room, grabs the rechargeable vacuum and then haphazardly runs it around the floor for 90 seconds. She then takes the vacuum with a partially full dustbin into the utility room and "puts it away" by leaning it against the wall in the general vicinity of the charger.

"Waaaah... there's no good live music anymore" "Waaah... these bands suck" "Waaaah... the Super Bowl commercials aren't funny anymore" "Did you see Rihanna grab her cootchie? Won't anyone think of the children?" "Boo hoo... Austin was so much better in 197x, 198x, 199x, 200x, etc. etc. (saw someone say four years ago)" Uggggggghhhh... bunch of people yelling at clouds. That's no way to go through life. Snap out of it. Enjoy life already. Bunch of fogeys... WTF.

  18. I've come to appreciate @TwiceHorn explaining all of this to us non-lawyers and as frustrating as it is, I know he's acting in good faith, so I've stopped getting upset about it. However, I think what all of his explaining has done is shown me how utterly fucked up and broken our justice system is. Aside from voting rights, I'd say the justice system is number 2 on the list of shit that needs to be absolutely scratched and started over from the beginning. But that will never happen, so onward we go, into oblivion.

  24. I think it was one of Perun's slideshows that talked about how we measure Shoigu with some of the wrong metrics. Since he's in charge of the military, we measure him by his effectiveness at running the military, when in many ways he should be measured by his effectiveness in staying in power with no real military experience while his rivals exit out windows. In other words, people keep screaming about his incompetence, but he's plenty competent. The problem is that the Russian system rewards competence in areas that are not actually reflected in productivity or effectiveness.

  25. It's still logistics and basic needs getting through. @MissingInAction says they can't keep a truck running And then @bolverk cited some anecdotal evidence. Then a quote about Wagner getting shorted on ammunition and I remembered that scene of the UKR guy in a trench standing on several inches of brass. Only one in ten tanks were ready to go from storage at the first call for back up. I don't expect it has gotten better.

  27. So i did a quick dive on this. They have 18 SEC Championships since joining (of course aggy being aggy, they listed SEC west championships and end of season tourneys that I had to back out of what they have listed). Over the same amount of time we have 83. However lets assume SEC is harder to win championships (Florida always in top 5 of Directors cup as an example). Aggy still only avg'd about 2.8/yr conference championships over their last 10 years of Big 12 play. They have always been under achievers. And 1/3 of their SEC championships are in Swimming/Diving and volleyball, and well.... we know how that is going to go.

  34. It really doesn’t matter who we vote for, for a few decades at least. Our gun laws are not representative of the governments we’ve had or public opinion. A reminder that your great-grandfather and grandfather had no issues with arms control. Mob-era Chicago was never as dangerous as made out to be in movies but because of public outcry, we implemented federal controls on automatic weapons. The men who shot their way across Europe and Guadalcanal came home to an NRA that promoted marksmanship and had supported federal gun control in the 1930s and would again in the 1960s. We are where we are because our federal courts have been packed with the looniest of judicial jihadists, a long campaign led by the most extreme nut-bars who have focused on this issue for decades with money and lobbying. There’s also some deeper rot going on here. Gun manufacturers can’t rely on sportsmen and outdoors types anymore. Hunting started going into a death spiral at the same time as tacticool black gun culture exploded. You can make a lot more money selling that bullshit to β€œenthusiasts” than you can by selling a few boxes of .30-30 a year to a person who actually uses his rifle for something.

  35. But that one person is the critical factor. He's using language and a message that is compelling enough he's not overthrown. There aren't mass protests. Protests, sure, but they're extremely isolated. Compare what is happening in Russia to what happened in Ukraine in 2004 or 2014. Compare it to what has happened in Iran that started with the hijab enforcement. Turkiye had bigger demonstrations regarding a park in Istanbul. The 2020-21 protests in Belarus were way larger than anything that's gone on in Russia, in a population 1/14th the size. Look at the surveys and watch the interviews. Listen to the audio recordings. This is not a people that think what they're doing is wrong. They think they're fully justified, and that the invasion and the subsequent battle for Ukraine is an existential battle against the West. Sure, the whole thing is being run incompetently because Russia. It's a kleptocracy with no value for competence on virtually any level. Survival and upward mobility is based on a tricky navigation between being important, but not too important, being loyal, being seen as not a threat, but still bringing value. None of that screams effective leadership. Oh, and a certain ruthlessness and a disregard for human life. You're talking about precision artillery and HIMARS, which Ukraine did not have prior to the invasion, and does not have the ability to produce themselves. You said: "Quantity no longer has a quality all its own if you are facing off against a modern army with masses of manpower or 1960s tanks." That's Iraq in the Iran-Iraq war. Quantity absolutely had a quality of its own in that war. If you mean the addition of precision artillery and HIMARS, and the ammunition to shoot them, that's a different story. As long as the West keeps supplying Ukraine, they'll be able to hold their own. My supposition - and I feel like I'm right - is that politically that won't last forever. In the US, not with an attritional war where another $100 billion is spent. If Ukraine gains the offensive like they did in the fall, that helps to change the narrative. To me personally the war and recovery is a bargain at $1 to 2 trillion. It sends a clear message to an evil empire and anyone who would emulate it, fuck around and find out. It helps a people I consider among the bravest on this planet to preserve their culture, their history, and their language, and to finally be integrated into the West in a way that very few countries have earned more. But there should still be a sense of urgency among the nations of the West in ways that representative governments aren't always terrific about.

  36. He most definitely DOES NOT need to resign. That would send a message that folks that battle depression are incapable of doing their jobs. He needs to get the immediate treatment that he needs, and follow-up on an outpatient basis. He's a big, tough, ugly motherfucker, and doing this publicly is a great, great thing. I wish him fabulous success.
