Pretty great training op for surly too. We excelled under extreme pressure and a hellacious deadline. I'm proud of all of you.25 points

So, the youngest occupant was Suleman Dawood, a university student at Strathclyde, just up the road from where my son is in school in Glasgow. So last night, I came up with a pitch that I'm going to suggest to him. Head to a pub near the university. Sit at the bar, drinking, looking forlorn, periodically looking down with his head in his hands. Maybe even muster up some tears. He's a young, good looking guy....so when some girl decides to come over and ask "what's wrong?", you give her the spiel: "I'm sorry....I just....I can't believe he's gone. My friend Suleman was on the submersible that was lost over the Titanic. He was such a good guy, and now he's gone. I just...I can't...." and then when she interrupts to tell you how awful it is, you hit her with the "I came here to be alone with my thoughts....but now I'm thinking I shouldn't be alone right now." In other words....run the old Fawn Leibowitz on em! It's guaranteed to work!24 points

If we go directly from the billionaire sub follies straight into a Russian coup, this week will go down in the history books.18 points

Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, A tale of a tragic trip. that started from the Polar Prince onto this janky Titan shit. their pilot was a well known French dude. the owner was a foolhardy stooge. 5 mission experts went under Sunday for what was a four plus hour tour But one hour and forty five minutes in the tiny sub was lost. if not for the courage of the surly crew all gallows humor would be lost. All gallows humor would be lost. The sub imploded less than 2 hours in and no one but the Navy seemed to know. Now there’s nothing left of them but a small debris field of tiny junk. less one thousand yards away from the unsinkable Titanic they found their final resting place. In one catastrophic millisecond their bodies were squashed like grapes! Does that cover it?18 points

All you people talking about how many dives did it do, that's not really important. What's important is you keep your dive/surface ratio at 100%.17 points

He’s the only guy that has some folks scratching their heads in this cycle. Texas is swinging for the fences across the board and then they’re on an OKG like Livingstone. He’s hopefully not jagger level. My view of this weekend is that we’ll see something similar to last weekend. A few commits that will go public on Sunday-Tuesday. Both weekends have been set up in order to create an avalanche of momentum into the dead period. If the gamble pays off, I assume Texas will have 16-20 recruits by the end of July, and Texas will be trending towards a top 5 finish if Seven Loss Steve can stay home and Steve Sarkwinsagain shows up with 10+ wins. You took one poster’s fantasy of a future regarding LSU and decided to educate the board with platitudes about LSU’s desires and behaviors to win. You haven’t been around here long, at least in this incarnation, so maybe it would help to read and lurk for a bit. I say that because we all fucking know everything you wrote and you’re becoming a bandwidth drain while you also fail to pause and consider what other people are actually saying about the current state of affairs. I’ll be a little more specific and if it doesn’t help you, it’s at least illustrative to others who aren’t imbeciles. $250-$750k in the bag game was annually competitive. LSU was rarely on the high side of that. Bama, Georgia, Clemson, OSU, and occasional interlopers like Auburn could usually play to the higher side. Then the 2022 cycle happened. ATM went 4-5x high side of that. Hence the aftermath from all parties and angles, much to this board’s entertainment. Meanwhile, NIL unfolded and people with plans started going to work. The landscape today for a roster when playing poker at the big boy table is trending towards 8 figures. The ATM shit from the 2022 cycle is now what gets programs into the arena for a normal top 10 recruiting and portal cycle. Now if you think LSU is able to make that work, you do you. To everyone else, that isn’t what’s happening. What I said is happening is happening. They’re little better off than when the bag game was being played. So are others that I already mentioned. I asked a friend inside the inner circle at Bama if they could match $4-5M per cycle in recruiting against the market. They gave a long pause and then simply said “there’s no fucking way.” And then, time passes, and all Nick Saban does is beg and plead with authorities and the media about NIL. Tough luck, little man. Of course getting guys into the NFL matters. Of course conferences matter. Of course brand and tradition matter. Of course coaching brand and history matters. That’s why Bama isn’t in the toilet. That’s also why Oregon isn’t in danger of signing a top 3 class. But things are shifting, bit by little bit, against Bama, LSU and Clemson, among others. I think Bama fractures this season the way FSU suddenly did in early 2000’s but for more complicated reasons with Bama.17 points

If one Orca thinks you are an asshole, maybe the Orca is the asshole. If a whole pod of Orcas think you are an asshole, then you are the asshole.17 points

I find calling Les Miles and Ed Orgeron special needs extremely insulting to people with actual special needs. I don't mean that in a PC way. I mean it in the sense that both of them would have to exhibit several levels of higher functioning to be considered special needs.16 points

Hell, if I was Prighozin, stuck between fighting Ukrainians or fighting Russians, I'd choose the Russians also. Much easier fight.15 points

Sad news. We liked to make fun of him, but he seemed like a genuinely good dude.15 points

SydneyCarton: The game done changed. closetojumping: The game is the same. Just got more fierce. LSU can work the families for sure, and that will still work, sometimes. But now we have a machine gun too. Remember, other programs have been taking elite recruits out of Louisiana with impunity for decades. Texas has done some of that. The move to the SEC coupled with NIL makes Louisiana fertile ground. LSU has a fat stack in baseball. They are broke ass motherfuckers otherwise. Their bag game was always just okay. They aren’t keeping up in football and that shouldn’t surprise anyone. Bama had a great bag game. Now they still have the same bag game. Price of poker has gone up. All good for us.15 points

it's a strange fucking world we live in when Surly is legitimately a more effective news aggregation mechanism than ACTUAL FUCKING NEWS CHANNELS Seriously, this thread has been a fucking gem and a better way to stay up to date than most anything else you'd find13 points

There are no "good guys" in the fight between Wagner and Russia, but there is DEFINITELY a good outcome. Current main task of Ukrainian forces: attrit Russian forces. Guaranteed outcome of Wagner v. Russia fight: attrit Russian forces. Every dead Russian, every spent artillery round, every blown up APC....is one that Ukraine doesn't have to deal with in Ukraine. I don't think Pierogi is a serious threat to Putin, in and of himself. However, his relative power and success expose a weakness in Putin's judgment, and weakness = vulnerability. There are other rivals who may seek Putin's power. They may be much closer, and much more capable of seizing it. Let Pierogi show what an idiot Putin is, and how weak he may appear. Then, once Putin's forces manage to kill Pierogi....you take out Putin.13 points

I did like the broader Cameron take, and he explains that deep sea exploration is a mature technology and we know how to do it. There’s been an incredible safety record since the 1960s. And you can expand that even into Western militaries. In the 2000s, there hasn’t been a single USN fatality due to a technical failure of hulls or critical systems underwater. The submarines work. Collisions are another matter. So we know how to do this and certify this and build this. But it’s expensive and costly and hard. It turns out that moving fast and breaking things 2.5 miles underwater means that you…..break things fast. The mentality of this organization from the outset created this problem.13 points

The “Surly exceptionalism” theory is a new one for me. An unbiased party reading this site probably thinks we all type by slamming our heads on the keyboard.12 points
