I stayed away this weekend, assuming the board would be loaded with doom and gloom and then a bunch of rationalization. After clicking around, it looks like things held together here somewhat nicely. That considered, now I'm worried about things here in the opposite direction. The general optimism towards the rest of the season across numerous threads creates the impression that a whole herd of you guys aren't prepared for what's actually going to unfold. That could lead to utter catastrophe when the inevitable happens, leading to numerous psychotic breaks for stunned denizens of this board and I'd hate to see it/hear about it. The reality is, Steve Sarklostagain still hasn't done a fucking thing in his career to merit receiving the benefit of the doubt from the fanbase and posters on this board. He's never won more than 9 games, he's been outcoached on numerous occasions, and he's a born loser at heart, reflected repeatedly in a career of inexplicable losses. Seven Loss Steve's entire head coaching history reflects a penchant for winning games that surprise people and then following that soon enough with an inexplicable loss or seven. 2009 - UW plays LSU close to open the season, then pulls a wild upset of USC in week 3 before going 5-7 with headscratching losses to a failing Weis-led ND program that went 6-6 and ended up firing their fat idiot head coach to end the year and then a loss to an eventual 4-8 ASU team that lost all 5 games they played after beating UW. "but closetojumping, UW was 0-11 in 2008! he can't be dinged for the turnaround in that season!" - wait, there's more. 2010 - After upsetting 18th ranked USC on the road in the Colesseum, Seven Win turns around the next week at home and shits the bed against an ASU that had lost 3 straight and went 6-6. 2011 - No real surprising wins this season, but ol'Seven Loss did find a way to climb into the dumpster and light his team on fire by losing to an Oregon State that was 2-8 at the time and finished 3-9. 2012 - a 3rd straight 7 win season. Steve Sarkloseian took some early losses against good teams and brought his team roaring back to a 7-4 record and 4 game winning streak before bending his Washington team over and letting a 3-9 Washington State team just buttfuck it into oblivion in the annual rivalry game. He had some big time "we're back!" wins this season, beating #7 Stanford and #Oregon State. 2013 - Finally, a retooled roster with all of Seven Loss' own players! UW marches out to a 4-0 record before getting buzzsawed by the #5 and then #2 teams in the country, the latter in blowout fashion. Not the end of the world. Then, they headed to Tempe, still ranked, and were beaten by 4 touchdowns via a Todd Graham-led ASU team on no one's radar. At 8-4, and showing an obvious trajectory towards titles, USC calls Seven Win Steve home! 2014 - Seven Win's best year to date, he takes a USC team, ranked 15th to open the year, and they finish ranked #20 with underdog wins against two ranked opponents while also inexplicably losing a slap fight to a Boston College team that would finish 7-6. 2015 - Uneven Steven had USC open at #8 and then plummet out of the top 25 at 3-2 when he was seen visibly drunk on the sidelines during a loss to an unranked UW team and eventually fired for repeating the behavior the following week at practices. 2021 - No valued win in this 5-7 season of rebuilding! a 7-3 roster, but Texas did have standout losses to eventual 7-6 Iowa State, 2-10 Kansas, and 6-7 West Virginia. 2022 - We can argue about Texas Tech but Texas should have won that fucking game. Seven Win Steve freezing up with his playcalling against Tech, TCU, and Okie State played critical roles in the eventual 8-5 season. 2023 - If you can't find the next headscratching loss, you're not alone. No one else seems to be able to on this board either. I'll help you out though. It is likely going to be among one of these opponents, and will likely be at least two of them, given history: @UH BYU KSU @TCU @ISU Tech I've bolded my best bets, but it could happen with any of them. Stop talking about the playoffs or rematching against OU. Texas doesn't have the coach for that. We're staring down the barrel of a 9-3 regular season. Sarkisian has said privately that he views bowl games as prep for the next season and the outcome doesn't concern him one way or the other. I'm assuming a banner year is in order here, and we see another career high 9 win season at 9-4. You can keep all of the receipts on this that you'd like, but you're not going to need them.24 points

I'm continually amazed at the ability of Americans to pick a side in this ongoing fiasco. I know people who are very pro-Israel and others who are very pro-Palestine. All I see is two bad guys fighting over a piece of land, and doing unspeakable things to each other, and justifying it because they each have a book written over a thousand years ago by goat herders that says god likes them better. Round and round we go.23 points

Nothing justifies what Hamas has done. Nothing could. But what they've done is the type of thing that tends to happen when you brutally oppress a population for too long. We've seen it happen literally every single place a colonial force has occupied an indigenous society. Even in a place like India where we typically associate resistance with nonviolence. Violence begets violence and Israel's far right and its campaign of oppression and violence against Palestinians was only ever going to empower Hamas or someone else like them. The far right in both Israel and Palestine have done a great job empowering each other and ensuring that no peaceful resolution is possible. Some assholes just love to fight and to kill and will drag millions along with them.19 points

Monotheism is the worst thing humanity ever invented. These 3 major religions have been a net negative for the human condition. It's all made up bullshit people. Get on with living your short life.18 points

Listened to some Texags radio and Billy on the Bama defense "This is the best defense in the conference, Georgia included. Texas only had 13 points entering the 4th while the aggies had 17 at half". Never a mention about Texas finishing with 34 and the aggies finishing with 20. That's the moral victory the ags needed to hang their hat on this year.17 points

i was ready to drag dead ou fans and dillon gabriel through the street naked and spit on him on saturday at 3pm so... look, this is about as impossible as it gets. it really is unfortunately and i hate it. i used to spend a lot of time involved in advocacy related to israel/palestine and doing economic work to try and move the stakeholders forward. everyone who believes that israel is pure or even superior on this should read "fallen pillars." anyone that thinks that the palestinians are purely victims in this thing is delusional and unfamiliar with how the biggest political benefactors were trading on others' suffering. this whole thing would require abating the worst and most natural instincts of humankind. people acting like they can't possibly contemplate being so animal as to parade dead israelis through the streets have also never had their loved ones mercilessly and needlessly murdered in front of their eyes. you might be surprised what you are capable of in that scenario. which, of course, does not excuse acting as extremists in palestine have. the cycle is so fucking wretched and there is empathy for both positions from the outside. but from the inside, it is about hate and survival every single day. and over one of the ugliest and shittiest places ever. that's what makes the irrational religious element of it so crazy to me. that this all-time dispute exists over fucking israel and not over san diego or french polynesia is bizarre.17 points

OU was always going to be a tough game. We should be a favorite in every remaining game. I’ll worry about additional losses if they occur, but it’s a miserable way to watch sports if you resign yourself to mediocrity in a year when you appear poised for success.16 points

at this point we are 7 years since he won 10 games. we are 10 years past him winning a national championship. We are 9 years past him winning a conf championship. he's finished unranked in the AP poll (3) more often than he has finished ranked (2) he constantly looks under prepared on the sideline his teams are now in year 3 of taking a step back every single year. he can't keep a QB healthy. percentage wise he has won fewer games than Sumlin (66.2% for Sumlin, 65.2% for Jimbo) and has somehow only won 4% more conf games than Sumlin (52.1% to 56.8%) - he's only ever had 2 winning conference seasons - Sumlin only had 1 losing conference season. dude went 4-4 a lot but still. %wise for him to tie Sumlin for win% he had to win 10 games I think (10-3) and he is 4-2. so 1 loss the rest of the way lol going 51-26 got Sumlin fired by the boosters. they may not be able to fire him $$ wise but they can turn off the spigots quickly and remind him who is really in charge. the issue they are going to have is that he is a very, very, very stubborn man and he is going to take that about as bad as any coach in the country - see how he handled that at FSU. either way they made their bed with this fucking guy and now have to live with it. i couldn't be happier16 points

It's also gross to see posters on this site sympathize with Hamas. When you look at an attack with genocidal intent AND effect, and say "well, this is the victim's fault," that's fucking bullshit. I say this as someone who has been plenty critical of Israel for a long-ass time. It's exactly how I would react if someone had an ultra shitty neighbor, who was widely criticized for years -- and I join in that criticism. Then the aggrieved party walks over there, shoots the neighbor in the head, rapes his wife, and kidnaps his kid. Nope. Not gonna respond with "well...he WAS a shitty neighbor." Not gonna do it. Line has been crossed. It cannot be uncrossed. Hamas has chosen the path. Now, the belligerents will follow that path. That's the way it goes.15 points

Additional update this morning - the principal has filed paperwork to take a leave of absence for the rest of the school year. I think he'll end up resigning or being fired, but this looks like an interim step. Assuming this is not the first time he's pulled something similar to this, but it does appear to be the first time it has gotten out to the general public. I still think there's something else to this story that just hasn't come out yet.15 points

What the actual fuck is wrong with some of you? We get it this is serious and a lot of people are going to die and it's a terrible situation that's been brewing for the better part of a century that is unfortunately coming to a head with no clean or really any resolution in sight except a lot of pain and suffering for a lot of people. Stop calling people genocidal maniacs and fucking throwing around hyperbolic nonsense labels at people who are just trying to fucking talk through the complicated situation and maybe learn a thing or two about what's going on. I don't care who you are no one is an expert in this, not even within the fucking governments and militaries that are involved. That's how convoluted and fucked up this is, so please for fucks sake just keep this thread to the news and stop with the armchair pretend like you are going to fix the fucking middle east on surly bullshit.13 points

At this point, the "he started it," or "he did some bad shit, too" is not a good conversation. Hamas just escalated shit, to start a brand new game. That game will now be played. It SHOULD now be played. What happened before is history. What is happening now is the new game. Again, a game that HAMAS CHOSE. When the primary noise is calls for restraint against a foe that just committed an act of genocide and is loudly threatening to do so again and again....that rings pretty shitty to me. Hamas fucked up. Now, they get what's coming to them.13 points

I am amazed at anyone who would equivocate between Palestinian/their elected government Hamas and Israel. Israel has showed remarkable restraint to repeated rocket attacks and acts of terror. Israel does not intentionally target civilians. If Palestinians had Israel's capabilities, Israel would not exist. There would be no roof knocks. Israel occupies land gained in a war started by the Palestinians. Palestinians lost and should move elsewhere. Just like most of the Jews who lived in Arab countries had to do.13 points

I mean, for the modern era, shouldn't we be naming warships things like "I Wish a Muthafucka Would," and the "SS Fuck Around and Find Out?" We live in a surreal simulation anyway, might as well embrace it.13 points

They came out wanting to destroy us, our season, and our lives. We came out "business-like". It amazes me to this day that Texas coaches take so long to figure out that this is no ordinary game and you'd better be shitting thunderbolts from the first kick. You could tell in the first 2 minutes that they got that and we didn't. Again.13 points

When Brisket is the voice of reason and calm on a thread…. Idk. The hyperbole is astounding. Power is cut - 2 million are going to die! Israel is committing genocide! The confirmation bias on here is strong. The 24/7 news cycle has so many of y’all fubar’d in the head. Facts are still coming in. Hand wringing and getting your menstrual cycle early isn’t helping Israel or the innocent Palestinians caught up in this. Post like an adult, especially one that graduated from UT Austin.12 points

The IDF has already begun broadcasting information to Gaza of where civilians should relocate to avoid air strikes and the coming ground operation. That is pretty much the opposite of what Hamas did on Saturday, which was a massive pogrom. Israel is not going to eliminate 2 million people and it’s not going to starve them all to death either.12 points

In a bit of a surprise to me - the principal has walked everything back, apologized to the student and her family and re-instated her scholarship. I live here, so to see this kind of a walk-back is uncommon, typically guys like this principal just double down and charge ahead. He must have received an immense amount of blowback from the school board, or more probably the school board attorneys as he was most likely going to get himself and the board sued into oblivion. May still happen as the student is not completely pleased with his apology.. https://www.wbrz.com/news/walker-high-school-principal-reverses-course-on-revoking-scholarship-student-government-position-from-student12 points

Who gives a fuck? If she's a teen, well, guess what, furries have been around for decades. If she's a little kid, my daughter likes to pretend she's a unicorn, witch, Bluey, Bluey as a witch, and various other characters. For fuck's sake, for years, right here in Austin, at the University of Texas, we had grown men who made millions of dollars for identifying as head football coaches.12 points

We are very much in two wrongs don’t make a right territory. Hamas is a terrorist organization and is doing unspeakable things. The Israeli government has been running an apartheid state in the West Bank and has done unspeakable things. Both of these things can be true at the same time. Seems like a lot of folks have a hard time getting their heads around that.11 points

Yeah, ability does limit aspiration . . . as evidenced by the fact that you didn't have a threesome with Sela Ward and Suzanna Hoffs last night. And by the way, if you think merely aspiring to commit genocide merits the intended victim wiping you out, then you ought to be real careful. By that formulation, Russia ought to have an FSB hit squad tracking you down. And by your formulation, they'd be justified in doing so. But even if they were justified in killing you--a point I do not for a minute concede--it would have very negative consequences for Russia. And so even aside from the moral and legal point, there is a practical point. And so from every standpoint--moral, legal, ethical, and practical--Israel needs to show a little restraint here and not follow the Brisketexan Guide to Justifying Genocide. Yeah--that's a war crime. And it's fucking gross. But beyond that, Israel's supporters in America don't do Israel any favors by loudly encouraging it to commit war crimes.11 points

The good thing is, there is a difference between what a staff is thinking and telling folks covering the sport and what reality looks like when it sets in. The buzz isn't good. One of the folks I know pretty well who has helped in recruiting that I've told stories about before isn't pumped about a close loss. They're convinced, this week, the guy is a loser who will never get him over the top. We'll see if a win in Rocky Top or some streak after that changes anything. These are aggies.11 points

Have you been to a college in the West recently? This is utterly unsurprising. And it tells everything you need to know that the "words are violence" crowd is cheering on and celebrating the kidnap, rape, torture, and murder of women and children as long as they are part of the other side. Anybody who is "both sidesing" this should beat their head against the wall until they see blood.10 points
