  1. One of the best guitarists I know still takes lessons from someone who isn't as good of a guitarist as he is.  He says it helps stimulate creativity, especially when he gets in a rut.  Plus, it gives you someone else to play along with.  I always like playing with someone who is better than me so I can learn from them and it encourages me to practice more.  Mainly so I don't embarrass myself.  Keep it up!

  2. I'm looking for a cheap way to get an organ should out of pedal(s).  Mooer made a cheap one a few years ago, but they only made one run of them before they got sued.  The single-use pedals are good,  (EHX B9 or C9) but if I can do it with pedal combos I already have, I can spend money elsewhere.  The B9 and C9 are around $220.

I saw a dude use a Mooer Octave pedal in combination with some kind of rotary pedal to make a believable enough sound.  I have a Boss Harmonizer and a couple of modulation type pedals that might work.    I've seen a couple of demos on youtube, but curious if anyone else has spent any time with this.

  3. Years ago, I was at my parents house and was watching some music show with Chet and Suzy.  He said, "I didn't know you liked country music so much".  Then he got a closer look at her and said, "Never mind.   I see why you are watching it".

  4. I can't wait to mess around with NoteFlight.  I just ordered one of those small, handheld Tascam DR-05 units to take to band practice.  It is just a bass, drums guitar but I really need to see how my guitar sounds in the mix and listen to see if I need to be playing any differently.  Plus, I can use it to practice guitar parts/solos and hopefully harmony.

Anyone use one of these?  Also, I know it will vary but how much run time can I get on a 32 GB card?  Will probably be recording the highest quality MP3 format versus WAV to save space.

  5. I was perplexed when a poster had Todd on their death pool list in a different thread. Is he not still clean and sober? Have seen him several times. Was first introduced to his music when he used to open for John Prine on Oh Boy records.
He hasn't been sober in a long time.....maybe stretches. I don't think he drinks any more but smokes a ton of weed and way more acid...... especially when he is with HWA and Great American Taxi. When he is just the singer, he is usually really stoned. Look up the Todd Snider Banana story on YouTube

  6. Along those lines, we had our first practice yesterday.  I only knew the bass player.  Had never met the drummer or the singer.  Singer ended up getting the flu, so he bailed, but the 3 of us got together for about 3 hours...it felt like 10 minutes.  Honestly, it couldn't have gone better.   I am easily the weak link this group, but I can follow along with just about anything and given time, I can get the solos down.   At the end, I thanked them for inviting me to sit in with them.  They both said, "Are you kidding?  Your in the band".

We are starting out kind of focusing on Elvis/Jazz/Blues stuff, but we nailed the song in the youtube clip on the first try, so that gives you an idea of what we are trying to do.

Other songs we worked up all went well except for one.  (Stray Cat Strut....gotta lot of work on the solo parts)

Ain't No Sunshine (Bill Withers)  - We nailed this as well.
    All of Me (Willie's Version)
    Burning Love (Jazzing Elvis)
    You Got It (Orbison)
Suspicious Minds (Elvis/Fine Young Cannibals mix)
The Way You Look Tonight (see below)
    Stray Cat Strut

Right now, our goal is to play a few open mic places to see where that takes us.  We are going out this week to check out a couple of places to see how we stack up.  The bass player said, "I always bitch about getting older, but the one thing I love about being my age is my 'Give A Fuck' is broken.  I'm just here to have fun".

  7. I've been putting off putting putting strap locks on my guitars...especially the LP.  Something about replacing the original equipment on that guitar freaks me out.  Until now, I've just been using the Grolsch type washers over the strap.  This worked fine as long as I could just leave the strap on the guitar in the rack but I have to put it in the case to take to practice, I have to take the strap off.  Pain in the ass.  So.....I'm looking for strap lock recommendations.

Anyone use them?  Is one better than the others?  Any to definitely stay away from?  I want to put the same brand on my Tele and the LP.

A buddy had a party last night. Roger Clyne (of the Peacemakers, and formerly of The Refreshments) played. Him and his guitar player signed a new Seagull and it was auctioned for charity. I bought it.
    Pretty nice guitar.

    Love Roger.
  9. Hulla - I don’t know shit about jazz. But if you just use a lot of 6th and 9th chords you should be good. And wear a beret.
Baboso has already threatened to kick my ass if I bought a beret or fedora.
  10. I know the next guitar....... So I'm out of the contest. Can't wait.

Anyone have a suggestion on jazz books? I know very little about jazz guitar but I found out my new group I'm playing in is interested in jazzy stuff Things like everything off of Willie's "Stardust" to start with. And also Elvis stuff... Just more jazzy versions. First practice is Sunday.

I also need to buy a small, portable, handheld recording unit.

I completely agree.  For one thing, it's known that the average listener can't discern sharp as much as flat, so when I work with singers I encourage them to aim for the top side of the pitch, especially on intervals.  But also, your point about timing is absolutely true -- singing behind the beat, while appropriate in certain "artistic" situations, tends to make the listener think the singer lacks confidence.  Had this been a real effort, I would have pushed my daughter to get on top of the beat more, but the last thing I needed to do in that moment was crap all over her performance.  14, you know.

One daughter played violin and guitar.....didn't stick with either.

Next daughter played piano and clarinet....didn't stick with either.    So glad your daughter is keeping the music going in your family.  It is truly something you can do virtually your entire life.  Amazing.

  12. My little planned acoustic due has been put on hold. Was kinda bummed. Then today I get a text from a neighbor.

Hey Hulla. Let me know if you’d like to play guitar some time. I have a friend who plays drums, I play bass and we have a signer that does an incredible Elvis. We’d be playing mostly classics - for example We played American pie and Are you lonely tonight at practice today. I thought you might enjoy being a part of. We generally aim to meet on Sunday mornings but we are flexible. Let me know. Thanks.
So, without hearing me play, they asked for some suggestions. Mine was Willie's version of All of Me

  14. Hey you know what's fun about having two telecasters?  When you make a resolution to learn some Rolling Stones in 2019 and realize it's in open G and then walla - you have a keef guitar.
If been looking for an extra tele for this very reason.
