Always a sellout, need to order Tuesday to be safe. Though we play them at the Disch the following night, San Marcos trip is good trip, great venue, ballpark, Texas St does a great job of hosting. And always a great game. Texas St is 13-6 this year.

[SWEET SIXTEEN BOUND] Texas vs Penn State - NCAA Tourney round of 32
torre replied to shadow_operative's topic in Basketball
Quotes: “This whole game and our game plan offensively was to really own the paint,” Terry said. “It was a paint game for us on the offensive end of the floor. We didn't want to settle. We knew (Penn State) was a really good offensive team, we had to try to make them work on defense and we wanted to attack the paint all night long. “We knew we had a size advantage; we knew we had a guy (Disu) that could score the ball that's playing at a very high level.” “I said, ‘guys, we've been here before, it's nothing we haven't faced this year,’” Terry said. "I said we've played the toughest league in the country, let's go out right now. We've got to put it on our defense. We've done it all year long. We've got to get a stop and score and put some stops together here and try to finish this game out. And I thought our guys went out and did that at a very high level.” “We know some nights you know we're not going to shoot as well as we want to shoot, but our defense travels,” Terry said. “We've been battle-tested time and time again. This was nothing new,” Allen said. “When we got down there, there was no shake, no bend. We just went back to what we do, what we prepped for. We knew it wasn't going to be easy. We knew there was going to be a time today where we would have to go through adversity and get over that hump, and we did that. A ton of guys stepped up, a complete total group effort. And Dylan had a special night. Another special night, I should probably say.” https://www.statesman.com/story/sports/college/longhorns/mens-basketball/2023/03/18/dylan-disu-texas-men-edge-penn-state-to-reach-sweet-16-in-ncaa-tournament/70024808007/ -
https://texassports.com/sports/softball/stats/2023 I love Czech, but that is the 7th HR she has given up this year (Simpson 2, Morgan, Gutierrez 3) Which gets us back to the convo of using Simpson only in relief. Two out error by Goode in the 3rd which led to 2 unearned was key.

Do you know why Watts-Brown did not start, he is the Friday guy ? TCU 13 OU 5 Tech 8 Ok St 7 (10 inn) Game winning double by Kash

https://texassports.com/sports/softball/stats/2023/marist/boxscore/15405 Not a good start for Simpson, 3 BB and 1 WP vs a 7-16 team.

If you did not see, Vic threw out the first pitch of the baseball game vs NDSU last night. He then went to the dugout and fist bumped each of the players including the managers. Very nice gesture not always done by the honoree who throws the first pitch. Shows his respect for the student athletes. That said, the players seemed more enamored with Rori, Shay, and Taylor who accompanied Vic and looked super sharp in their just above knee dresses.

Thanks for sharing. Hopefully, an isolated incident. Before there were at least 3 students who do the in game promotions plus a supervisor. The supervisor directed the different promotions and the students. The students appeared to be chosen and normally have a great personality and a "fans first" attitude. Perhaps that has changed and now promotions are administered by a third party vendor in lieu of UT Students.

Texas needs to remove the name from the back of the uniform like the great ones (Texas Baseball, Yankees, Alabama softball, OUsux softball, etc) We're that good, fans will know your name.
-
What happened to the free OkSt fan forum (can't recall name) ? Still active, can't find it ? Visited some, especially during baseball season. Seemed to have knowledgeable fans.

Was it you that made the comment about Brown not being aggressive "He is used to having a SS or 3B make that play" ? (excellent comment) 11 games in, all new infield, still learning each other. I will be the optimist and say we revisit in a couple of weeks. Perhaps J. Duplantier will be the next Trey Faltine tonight. I really thought Flores would be the answer at SS but after checking seems he projects better at 3B or 2B where according to this Prospect Live report he played alot in HS. 90 Jalin Flores SS Brandeis Helotes, TX Flores is a tall, high-waisted, long-levered infielder with present bat speed and all-fields juice. There's some noise in the loading phase of his swing, but he's often on-time to drive the ball with authority into the gaps. Flores really hit a growth spurt in 2021 and now figures to likely shift to third base at the pro level, possibly even second base where he's played a good amount of his ball of late with Brandies. The bat is the calling card here. https://www.prospectslive.com/prospects-live/2021/12/29/2022-mlb-draft-top-300-prospects

Note the way Jaycee is holding up her left arm getting ready for the future. 🙂 Very happy for Cat and her Family.

Sry to hear. Many local teams probably bought all the tickets. If you haven't, may want to call SHSU ticket office to see if they are arranging for temporary extra bleacher seats or if lawn chair seating is available.

RIP, Jeff. Luv ya ! Jeff Ontiveros, who set home run records at Texas and still holds the mark for games played in a Longhorns uniform, died this week, the school acknowledged Saturday. A tweet from the Texas baseball program said: "We are saddened to hear of the passing of Jeff Ontiveros, ’02 national champion and the Longhorns’ all-time leader in games played. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones." The Twitter account belonging to the baseball team at Round Rock High School, where Ontiveros won a state championship in 1997, said he died Friday morning. No cause of death has been announced. Ontiveros, 43, played at Texas from 1999 to 2002. The first baseman is still the Longhorns' all-time leader in games played (260), starts (253), at-bats (922) and total bases (510). He also left Texas as the Longhorns' home run king, though his 55 career homers were surpassed by Kyle Russell's 57. The 20 home runs he hit in 2002 were bested by Ivan Melendez (32 in 2022), Russell (28 in 2007) and Kody Clemens (24 in 2018). While Melendez was resetting the school standard last season, Ontiveros told the American-Statesman: "Kid's a phenomenal player. It's fun to watch him compete at that kind of level." On his final play in a UT uniform, Ontiveros scooped up a grounder hit by a South Carolina batter and stepped on first base to secure the 2002 College World Series title. "Jeff was someone I grew up idolizing as a high school standout, then a college leader, then a teammate who provided all of us with his blend of absolute toughness and beautiful love for the game," former UT teammate Huston Street tweeted Saturday. "He is a Longhorn Legend, Champion, and made all those around him better." After he left Texas, Ontiveros played for a few years in Boston's farm system. https://www.statesman.com/story/sports/college/longhorns/baseball/2023/03/04/former-texas-baseball-slugger-jeff-ontiveros-passes-away/69971648007/

Did you post in the baseball forum, or are you referring to the softball game @ Huntsville on the 14th ? Seems many are having to go StubHub.

Sinton's Blake Mitchell, highly rated HS prospect. '23 grad, committed to LSU if he doesn't go pro. Current ('22) photo of Adrian Alaniz. Staying in shape. Will be 39 on 12 March. 10. Blake Mitchell Catcher, Sinton Mitchell is a do-it-all player and the epitome of a high school star. On the mound, he's been up to 97 with a promising slider. Some think he's got a home on the mound. But his actions behind the plate have many believing he's a prototype backstop of the future. Mitchell, a left-handed hitting thumper, has significant raw power and feel for driving the baseball without selling out for the juice. He can get pull-happy, but has shown a willingness to use the left-center field gap. Behind the plate, Mitchell has plus arm strength with upper-tier athleticism for the position. His receiving skills are impressive considering his age. Mitchell has some similarities to Tyler Soderstrom from 2020 with more pure ability behind the plate at this same stage https://www.prospectslive.com/prospects-live/2022/1/15/2023-mlb-draft-prospects-38awn

Quotes: "At the end of the day, you walk two guys and had to groove a pitch and that's the bottom line," UT coach David Pierce said. "So we didn't make them earn the three runs in the ninth." So, it is too early to start asking if Johnson could contend for a spot in UT's weekend rotation? "No, it's not too early to say that," Pierce said. "It's electric. It's real stuff. That's Friday night stuff for anybody in the country. I think for him it's just repeatability and being able to just feel more and more comfort." Down by three runs, Texas was retired in order in the ninth inning. Facing LSU hurlers Thatcher Hurd, Nate Ackenhausen and Christian Little, a trio that Pierce said could be "very potentially a big league staff," Texas mustered four hits on Tuesday. https://www.statesman.com/story/sports/college/longhorns/baseball/2023/02/28/lsu-bests-texas-in-ninth-inning-of-tight-baseball-game/69956279007/

I just think there is a learning curve for both Pierce and Woody. I am sure your points are correct.
-
Championship level baseball - Hurd (their starter) had a 1.06 era with 48K's in 34 innings last year at UCLA - Ackenhausen (reliever) had an era of under 2 while at juco (E. Okla). Don't care what level, era under 2.00... - LSU was hitting .328 before this game (though weaker teams) but limited to 4 hits - Hope Pierce develops full confidence in Woody and gives him control of staff tl;dr: Relax

I thought Atwood played well at 1B in Clearwater, since it has been mostly Day. She is tall, had good footwork, and probably an edge on Day with athleticism. I agree with @bschoolprof on her performance thus far at catcher. Seems to be not concentrating resulting in balls passing that can be blocked. Position stability is not a staple with Mike White, doubt it will ever be. Offense first or so it seems. But he is overall successful. But even in the outfield, would help with players playing same position even though they may rotate. I really hope MW is working with Day in the circle. When we get to a tournament setting, always good to have a 5th pitcher if nothing more than to "eat" some innings.
-
Well he should know, or is just trying to motivate this year's team. I do know he lost Claunch (catcher) Ore St transfer and Dylan Rock (OF, UTSA transfer) two very experienced players who were key last year. I did a cursory lineup review and seemed the outfield was different. Check the below site if you prefer a stream vs radio. Also has radio links. https://therealstreamhub.site/forumdisplay.php?fid=16

Watched the last 3 innings on a stream. Portland played relaxed and with alot of energy. West Coast team. Very early, but aggy lost alot from last year. Entire outfield including Dylan Rock, our nemesis, catcher (Claunch) and I think their shortstop, maybe others. They still haven't solved their bullpen issues, but again very early.
