  1. Wendy's is in a weird position in the market. They're better than McDonald's, Burger King, Sonic and Jack in the Box, but not as good as Whataburger, In N Out, Shake Shack , or 5 Guys. They're neither really cheap like the shit chains, nor are their burgers "good" like the others. (I don't post this to argue whether any of the "better" chains deserve to be in that category.)

Spicy Chicken Sandwich slams and goes hard.

No it doesn't. Not when there's usually a Popeye's around much closer than a Wendy's.

Wendy's isn't nearly popular enough, nor do they have enough locations to do surge pricing. Chick-fil-a could get away with that shit. Wendy's can't.

  3. Gonna put all the stuff I normally do in the ground this week. I don't think it's gonna freeze again this year. I'll do 4 types of tomatoes, japs, serranoes, habaneros, and cayenne. I make fermented hot sauce from the peppers. I put two chili pequins in the garden last year and they got huge and killed off most of my peppers because they robbed all the light. I'll put one pequin in a large container this year instead. I put cukes directly into the lawn soil and run them up a trellis. These "winter" temps and lack of rain have me concerned about this summer.

  4. No one outside of Lake Travis would be talking about this if the kid wasn't a 4-star D1 football prospect. He's basically a public figure at this point, and he needs to learn to act accordingly. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes, you dipshit.

Also, his mom is on the board of some sort of OU athletics support/booster bullshit. Even if he hadn't almost killed a teammate, he was probably never gonna come here.

Most Messed Up is absolutely classic Old 97's.  If you haven't listened to that album much, you should.

I'll give it a spin. I actually don't think I've ever listened to the whole record.

I guess that's the record they made right before Rhett got sober. I read an interview somewhere that Jason Isbell was a resource for him when quitting drinking/weed.

Too Far to Care is one of the best albums of that entire genre.  I heard it my freshman year at ISU and it blew my mind.  It completely changed how I viewed music and even though it wasn't my catalyst to fully embrace country (getting into Drive-By Truckers a couple years later did that) it set the stage.

Comparing other stuff to it is only setting yourself up for a letdown.

I mean, I get it. But if I want to listen to the Old 97s, I want to listen to the good shit that I like that got me into them. I know every note, every lyric to every song on their first three records. I dig Fight Songs and Satellite Rides, but don't listen to those albums as much. And Drag it Up was good but all I really love off that record is "won't be home."

Everything after that felt/feels like the Rhett Miller-easy-listening-pop-experience where the songs could be used in the reconciliation scene of a rom com.

They set a standard that was impossible to maintain.

I still want to see them live again though.

  7. About Ronnie Van Zant and Neil Young

More DBT/Jason Isbell about The Band's Rick Danko and Richard Manuel

More songs about members of the Band - Elton John about Levon Helm

More Jason Isbell about Justin Townes Earle

Edit: Levon isn't actually about Levon Helm. Bernie Taupin just liked the name and wrote the lyrics to the song about a guy named Levon. Still, I think it counts.

  8. Music is important to me. Musicians that make the music that I like are important to me. Some songs/albums are more important than others, including:

    Social/Political Change:

    Billy Holiday - Strange Fruit

Blowin in the Wind - Dylan

Change is Gonna Come - Sam Cooke

What's Going On - Marvin Gaye

Fight the Power - Public Enemy

There's a Riot Going On - Sly Stone

Both Sides, Now - Joni Mitchell

    Innovation in songwriting/recording

    Robert Johnson

    Hank Williams

Revolver & Rubber Soul - Beatles

Bob Dylan - Pretty much everything he did in the 60s

    Jimi Hendrix

    Exile - Stones

    Redheaded Stranger - Willie

    The Ramones S/T

    Pet Sounds - Beach Boys

    Nevermind - Nirvana

    OK Computer - Radiohead

I don't even listen to most of that shit regularly. But I recognize and understand the impact and importance of each in the evolution of popular music. There's a lot more shit but that's what I thought of off the top of my head.

I'll be at this one for sure:  daughter's band has been added to SPIN's 3/16 party with Sunny Day Real Estate:

Sunny Day Real Estate + Get Up Kids + Die Spitz SXSW

That ought to be a fun one. Saw Sunny Day about a year or so ago when they first got back together at Emo's. Really fun show. Get Up Kids are always a good time too. Still haven't had a chance to check out your daughter's band, but it's on my list.

Brendan Jaimes started at LT for Nebraska for several years and is a member of the LA Chargers now.

To be fair, we have been better at QB, WR, and RB than on the line. But this kid is different and there are several 6'5+ edge and DT prospects coming up including Bobby Duncum's kid.

I think the concern is how cavalier (see what I did there?) you are in dismissing this kid playing a "prank" on a teammate that could have killed him. That's some Joe Mixon/Sooner shit.

I feel like I am taking crazy pills myself. What in the fuck is being discussed here? Did a target at Lake Travis (who would that even be?) instigate trying to kill a teammate with peanuts? This is a thing?

Dude. Everything is OK. It was just a stupid prank. No football players will be held accountable for actions that could have killed a teammate. Nothing to see here. They apologized!

    BBQ

The last time I went about 4 years ago I remember liking their sausage. And while don't typically put sauce on quality bbq, I do fucking LOVE their bbq sauce on a smoked chicken.

Just learned I'm having breakfast tomorrow at Waffle House.  It occurred to me that they make a lot of different things and will customize and so I wonder...

    How do I order migas?

I'm going with "Hash scattered and smothered and covered, hold the hash add scramble, add doritos, scratch the raisin toast and slide me a tortilla on the side." unless someone has a better plan.

I mean, if you insist on being "that guy" and creating a dish they don't serve, then I would get the two scrambled egg breakfast, smothered, covered, peppered and diced. I'm assuming you've done research to know that they have doritos (gross) so you could get a bag of doritos, crumble them into the mess of gross you just ordered. I don't think the cooks are gonna open a single-serving bag of doritos and do that for you. Or if you're committed to Frankensteining your order up, throw some tortilla chips in your pocket instead and bring them into the restaurant instead of crumbling a bag of doritos into the mess. Sub tortillas (if they serve them) for toast. Boom. You've got shitty migas.

Or you could order something they're not gonna fuck up...

  13. Texas has combine participants at every position group on offense and defense except QB, who would have been there if he had declared for the draft, and P/K. That's how you build a fucking team. Have a guy who will play on Sundays at every position group. It's just that easy.

Not strictly HEB-centric, but I'm not gonna start a new thread about pickled jalapenos.  These are my go-to brand, not particularly hot, a little sweet, fantastic on nachos, etc.  However, there are about eleventy billion other options on the shelves -- any particular recommendations?

It sucks it’s like $5 for a jar

I buy the big-ass can of pickled japs and empty them in a large old pickle jar. The markup on the smaller jars of japs is absurd.

  15. I'm team "gravy on the side" so that the breading stays crunchy. White gravy and lots of black pepper. Don't need any more protein because I'm already eating a deep fried steak.

I've had the cowboy style cfs from Matt's. It's pretty good. But when I go to Matt's (usually not my choice), I'm getting the asadero tacos, as those are the only true standout menu item that I've had there.
