  1. The expected colder seasonal changes affecting indoor/outdoor activity appear to be manifesting as expected.  How much it spikes probably is (has to be) affected by how hard regional populations were already hit in the spring/early summer, for one.

Compared to the US as a [shit]whole, the normalized new daily cases/1M population is substantially lower in Poland, Finland, Canada, and Russia.  Meanwhile keep NY's uptick in context:

    Spoiler

    Ej9VwF6WkAEN6s0?format=png&name=900x900

NY peaked at over 11K new cases per day in Mar/Apr and was at over 7K new cases per day for essentially a month.  While 1500k new cases per day in NY is worse than the ~500/d it had for July/Aug it's hard to see that daily rate approaching over 7k/day again.  Even factoring that NY is down from 11k new cases/d to 1500 cases/d, NY's normalized rate today (~79 new cases/1M) is still higher than current spikes in Canada, Russia, Poland, and Finland.

I guess the takeaway is that even with the expected seasonal increases, we're not yet seeing signs of a recrudescence that will equal or surpass the severity of the first half of 2020.  Hopefully it won't even approach being half as bad as the worst days for a chunk of US regions that have already weathered big spikes like NY, FL, TX, CA and several others.

Obviously there's no mention whatsoever of his mental status or if he's getting medicated with any psychotropics (other than pocket adderall) to counter his, uh, iatrogenic exuberance, which arguably is a bigger risk than covid right now.  Pelosi taking up 25th Amendment considerations tomorrow probably isn't theatre, ie there's likely information getting to the Hill about what's happening with Donald at the WH beyond what is manifestly apparent to the public.

I’m more than happy that the FBI is taking these terrorist cells out. I am concerned that, as implied above, the circle of QAnon, gun gangs, and  gullible mentally unstable citizens has too much crossover.

Just a reminder that FB essentially wiped out all the QA accounts just days ago.  I don't recall reporting on the "why now" of the mass takedown, but the timing of these so-called countermeasures might not be entirely unrelated.

I mean, this is a huge deal. If I’m reading that correctly and it’s 123 employees at Congress...this will ramp up the pressure on McConnell to shut the process down on the SCOTUS confirmation shit.

That was my first thought as well.  It doesn't say over what time frame infections of US Capitol workers totaled 123, but it sounds like it's happening more or less now.

  5. covid Unchained in DC

I'm reminded of the one time a few years ago I took prednisone for a few days for a single episode of suspected gout in my big toe.  I was chatting in a roomful about to lead a meeting and my mind was effortlessly generating wildly inappropriate sexualized jokes like a fountain.   I was able to rein it in, but damn.  Then at home that day or the next I got engrossed with scratching off fine bits of paint with a razor blade from the glass old patterned window panes.  tirelessly for hours.  Felt pretty barfy from it by day 2 or 3 then stopped thankfully.  Afterwards I made the conscious decision that it's better to stay well hydrated the rest of my life.

my first reaction was : hilarious.

my second reaction was : how come KellyAnne is not quarantining from her family/Daughter? WTF.

So many disturbing things in there.  And what lie did the daughter allegedly say about mom and covid?  That kellyanne called him Donald Crump? The Great Gaspy?

  7. Trump was doing Frank the Tank in the backseat rolling away from Reed to Marine One and his pupils might be blown in his balcony vid about dominating covid.  Yet we still don't have confirmation whether he has signs of covid pneumonia.  The treatments suggest evidence of lung involvement.  It'll definitely be interesting to watch how that little pharmacologic wave he's riding breaks.  Although not refusing care, there's a fair chance he insisted on returning to the WH against medical advice.  He doesn't appear holdable right now but the current stressors combined with systemic steroids and whatever drug of choice he might be adding on his own elevate all kinds of risks right now.  If you think you've seen what Trump crazy looks like, his mental state over the next week could take on a new look.

How will that play if someone falls critically ill and/or dies from Covid and  it is traced back to Trump's events the last two days?

     GOP Donors "freaking out"

"Republican donors who attended President Donald Trump’s fundraiser at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club are panicking after being around the commander in chief hours before he announced that he was infected with the coronavirus.

GOP donors have been reaching out to Trump campaign and GOP officials for any guidance following the event, according to a person briefed on the matter.

“The donors have been texting and calling. Freaking out,” the person with direct knowledge said. This person declined to be named as the conversations were deemed private.

Trump’s campaign, as of Friday morning, has not sent out any official guidance to many of the donors involved with the event."

  9. Following up on the post about the 1911 above, after some more learning, turns out both 1911's have serial numbers preceded by "C" indicating commercial production, not military issue.  Based on that, it shifts the production year of the one pictured above to a 1916 made "Government Model" instead of 1913 military issue.  The nickel plated one was manufactured in 1925.  pics of the 1925 pistol:

I now know these guns were not owned at any time by my great grandfather, who died in 1908, right after my grandfather was born.  Found this :  He was shot to death by the bartender Walter James at the "Board of Trade Saloon" in Ft. Worth on 20 May 1908 at the age of 38. During his life he had killed about 6 people but never served time in the penitentiary. He left behind a widow and two small children.

So these two 1911's were acquired and used by my grandfather.  I did find this out about his service and work history from his obituary:

He was born Feb. 8th 1908 at Forth Worth and was reared there and at Amarillo.  He joined the Texas Department of Public Safety in 1930, serving in the South Texas and Pecos districts.  He assisted in the search for Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker.  After World War II service in the U.S. Coast Guard, he took retirement from the DPS in 1950.

After that, in 1950 he was briefly employed in Saudi Arabia by Aramco before returning to live out his life Midland.  I knew him in early childhood, but he suffered for a long time from emphysema and died prematurely.

I'm just grateful to have this piece of family history.  I'll be forwarding my brother the proper magazine belonging to 1925 Colt.

  10. @Armybrat - Thanks.  Been looking around and found -  forum.m1911.org - that takes it there.  Of the two extra clips I have, just realized one goes with the nickel plated 1911 and the other has an 'L' stamped inside the toe, for MS Little, WWI and WWII era magazine manufacturer.

  11. Some family heirlooms were passed on to us a few weeks ago.  One set of items was a pair 1911 .45 ACP's.  One is blue steel and the other is nickel plated.  I let my brother pick which one he wanted and he chose the nickel plated.  Last week I started some research on the blue steel 45.  Turns out it was manufactured by Colt in 1913 with a SN tied to the 44001-60400 batch.  The distribution location of the 16,400 batch isn't reported.  The immediate two preceding batches of 100 guns each made in 1913 were sent to the USN-USS New York and USN-USS Texas.

This one is stamped 'government model' above the SN on the right side.  I believe this came into our family by my paternal grandfather who served in the USCG during WWII and was stationed in Cairo, IL and San Francisco from what I know.  It's possible my great grandfather originally owned this gun, but need to do more family research to find out if he ever had military/govt ties.  We think the nickel plated 1911 was used by our grandfather during his career as a highway patrolman in West Texas post-WWII.  Have to check the SN on that one as well.

Details of interest are the Colt mfg proof stamp "VP" in a triangle on the trigger guard, the rearing colt stallion in this case located in back near the hammer, and the lower case "b" on the trigger guard.  I have no idea what the lower case "b" signifies and haven't found any references to it yet.  It's got the original two-tone metal clip plus two extra clips with the case.  I don't know where the case or extra two clips came from, but I'm guessing probably not a part of the original issue.
