Baseball dads get super serious, especially when their little babies get beat. I was coordinator (commissioner) of our league this season. We had a few formal protests. These were not appeals during games about illegal bats - we had those and handled them in-game per our rules. These were formal protests. Our league rules make it pretty tough to protest, but that didn't stop these dudes. First, you have to notify the umpire during the game, then notify the opposing manager of intent to protest, and notify the scorekeeper. Then, within 24 hours, you have to file a written protest to the coordinator/board. We received written out, 4 page, authored by dads who are attorneys protests. Sooooo ridiculous. Each of them because something wasn't "fair" - which is most easily interpreted as "I won't volunteer any of my time to help the league but I will bitch and moan when my son's team loses to the Mexicans from the north side of I-10."

I'm a pretty serious dad about coaching my boy, and it's select baseball...so we're trying to win.  But the most important thing he's going to take from sports is handling adversity.  How in the hell am I supposed to guide him through that if I'm making excuses and protesting when he gets bet or bitching about balls and strike calls if a kid fans him (which happens all the time...dads are insane about this)?

  2. I liked Waterstreet that was in the building that's now been Sam's Boat for a decade plus.  That part of town had no options like it then.  You could do a decent piece of fresh fish and a wedge salad for like 8 bucks, and it was close to my office.

Still is actually but different office/company.

I miss Musashino's below China town on Mopac.  I know they've reopened, but the new location isn't the same.

Didn't even know it was closed, haven't been in forever.  That was the site of my first date with the wife, circa 2001.

  4. It's Central Texas and Kansas City for me, though I'm only in KC a couple times a year, so I stay pretty tightly focused on the best places when I'm there.  Other than obvious differences in brisket prep, the best Texas and KC places are more similar than different.

The depth of really good (if unspectacular) joints that Central Texas has developed over the last 5-10 years is staggering.

Ugh, even button mashers may not river pot it at 1/2 without the goods. Does he really do that with Ax?? In H2, he checks his top pair, although it was versus 2 people. H1 shows us his dumb x/minraise line. Wish we knew what what he had there. Did he do it with Kx and call it off?

It's gross either way, but I probably fold unless I'm really confident that he does that will all (or most of) his Ax combos.

This is pretty much where I'm at.  Fold, because I don't see enough paths to victory, mathematically or by gut.

Ever since Oasis Brewing decided to do a kitchen I couldn't imagine why anyone would decide to go to the shitty Oasis.

Had lunch there yesterday, wife picked it as a "something we don't normally do" for Mother's Day.  The food was predictably pretty terrible (combo fajitas), and the service was even worse.  15 minutes before greeting, queso/guac showed up but we didn't have chips, yet.  Took 5 more minutes (and two employees) to solve that.  Food took about 30 minutes.

I don't know if they didn't know it was Mother's Day or if they're just even more terrible than before.  I'm glad I only go about once a year.

Should be interesting to see whether this makes things more corrupt, less corrupt, or pretty much the same. Not being a gambler myself, I'll be watching with amusement.

I think it will land on "about the same".  There are lots of hands in the cookie jar for widespread sports gambling...leagues want compensation, governments want their piece, and ultimately those hands are powerful enough to get it done.  All in all, if I'm betting legally in Texas but paying a worse price due to all the mouths to feed, I'm going offshore or through a bookie, anyway.

  8. Austin's traffic is legitimately worse than cities of similar population due to the lack of freeways/lanes.  If I need to get downtown from 183/Mopac, the fact that my default would be something like Burnet -> 45th -> Lamar instead of the two N/S thoroughfares doesn't really have an equivalent in places like Indianapolis, San Jose, Cincinnati, Kansas City, etc.

Houston is a different beast just due to population.

Not a BGE owner.  So curious.  Do the temperatures fluctuate on these things that much?  I've got a WSM and it's pretty easy to lock in on temp.  I figured with all the ceramic on the BGE type grills, there would be less fluctuation.

It takes a little while to get a feel for when/how much to close the vents, but once you've got the hang of it...they're incredibly stable.

I didnt bully him just pointed out that he cost the whole table with an extremely stupid play....and the second reason i made the thread seems to be working since we didnt have a blackjack discussion going before hand

Except he really didn’t. Once you understand that, you’ll understand why you’re getting laughed at.

It was a stupid play, but it had literally no mathematical effect on the table unless you know the cards in advance. And if you know that, I’ll stake you for your next baller hundred and we can go in halvsies on our own Caribbean island.

Gotta admit I love some Taco Bell from time to time, too. But damn I miss Baja Fresh. And wtf is a Moe's Southwest Grill?

An assembly line burrito place that has good queso and salsa, which helps down out the terrible burrito.

But they can't stay open in Austin, locations at Parmer/35 (years ago) and out in Cedar Park (recently) both closed fast.

I mean - I’ve had ~10 years of bbq’ing as a hobby, so I’m not going to put liquid smoke on a brisket after roasting it in a turkey pan or anything. Just new to the ceramic grill/smoker game

On ceramic, no lighter fluid, no briquettes, don't get it super hot for the first couple of cooks, and don't have your face nearby when you open the dome.

You'll get used to it very fast.

question I never got a good answer on from the old place - is there anyplace in Austin that's particularly good for repairs?  The clasp on the bracelet of my speedy isn't functioning correctly (pops open with even a little bit of pressure), and the guy at Throckmorton's couldn't figure out why I thought that was wrong. Russell Korman?

I don't have any firsthand experience, but in this position I would call Bernard Watch, ask if they repair Omegas, then when they certainly say no...ask for a referral.

  14. Under Kansas for as much as you can stand. The wildly optimistic view would get them to 3. Having that be a push, and needing 4-8 to lose, is Mayweather/McGregor easy but sadly with lower limits.

I've reached out to my waiter friends, but I have not gotten a reply.

Not for $17 an hour you haven’t. That’s a bad lunch shift at Applebee’s.

i hired a bartender for a Christmas party roughly that size. $150 for 5 hours and guests also tipped.

It is if the only sports you care about are Cowboys, Longhorns, Rangers, Cubs, Texas BB and Golf.  Throw in the MLB package I access through the Smart TV menu and that's everything I need.  Fuck the DirecTV NFL package.  Only Fantasy Football dorks need that crap.

Out of market NFL team has me by the balls.

I use my 12.9 Pro more for fun than work.  Love it, not too big at all, easy to read stuff with aging eyes.  Speaking strictly of screen size, I like it because I can run 2 apps (or safari tabs) split on the screen at the same time and both be big enough to actually use.  Also,  I like being able to see a lot of data at one time, which is obviously easier to do than with the standard iPads.  I don't even bother with our iPad 2 and iPad HD anymore - I just go in search of the Pro if it isn't immediately around.

I went back and forth and landed on the smaller Pro.  When I'm split screen, I wish it was bigger...when I'm just reading forums or news, I like the size.  If I can't even decide which one I prefer, I can imagine personal preferences vary wildly.
