  1. Big series of home matches for the Horns these next few weeks. Really important to get some wins against top 40 opponents. Texas is down in the ITA rankings due to having only three good wins. Baylor currently counts as a ranked win but they're not going to be in the rankings next week (now 5-11 and playing two walk-ons). Florida State is very talented, having two French players with past rankings in the top 800.
  2. Not saying the match will be competitive but this is almost commonplace in other NCAA sports during the off season. The basketball and volleyball teams are playing pro teams whenever they go on their European tours. The Japanese Softball team (2nd in the world) also played University of Florida this year in the preseason. There's also a lot of amateurs playing pro tournaments in golf and tennis.
  3. Beat Georgia on the road today. Hopefully Georgia starts winning some SEC matches and they'll shoot up the rankings. Markes seems to have really found his stride this season. IIRC he was a walk on.
  4. Opened up the bakery shop today against Incarnate Word. I know this match was in place of the Tulane match but not sure how much of a gain if any there were for the players. Yuya's opponent never had a game point and only had one break point the whole match.
  5. Two time Big 12 Champion out for the year
  6. If you add in Paralympians, Esther Vergeer should be in the talk. Wheelchair Tennis- 48 Grand Slams, 7 Gold Medals, 470 win streak which only stopped when she retired
  7. Stanford returned every member from last year's championships team in May (and then promptly added 2 blue chip freshmen) Poluta beating Janice Shin (who was 15-1 before today's match at line 5) and Tijana beating Higuchi (who was 33-1 before today's match at line 6) shows how deep this team can be. Add in the fact that Petra's status is unknown, this is a good sign of how high the ceiling can be for this team.
  8. Play canceled today due to unsafe road conditions. Looks like there's going to be more snowfall in Seattle the next three days. Not sure how they're going to get the rest of the tournament completely finished.
  9. Loss to UM, bummer. But let's not forget how Texas lost to (a less talented) Illinois team and went 0-3 last year at indoor nationals before turning things around in the outdoor season Still a good win against Ohio State this weekend with a shorthanded team
  10. Looks like the injury bug is hitting not only Texas but also Oklahoma State. A day after a stunning loss to Arkansas (picked to finish last in the SEC after 5 of their starting 6 didn't return this year), they are currently down 3-1 to UCLA with two losses coming from retiring mid-match.
  11. Top 10 win over North Carolina today! Biggest win of the year so far. Huge effort by Yuya today. Saved at least three match points.
  12. Good win considering there was so many factors against the Horns: Road trip in the middle of the polar vortex, playing indoors, Petra injured, short roster (walk ons didn't come for the road trip), Katie having to step in and delivering not only in singles but also doubles with a new partner (interesting sight seeing the tallest and shortest playing together) A win is a win and Texas will get the 10% road bonus in the computer rankings No time to rest as Michigan is on Sunday
  13. She was missing so many forehand returns lol. Thank goodness it started working again when they were down match point. (saved 2 in the tb) In bad news, it looks like Granic is in a boot
  14. Interesting thought about forfeiting the season. IMO, it's a lose-lose situation. Don't play the season and everyone sits around unhappy and restless. Contracts and agreements between other schools, PAC 12, TV networks, sponsors, etc. get broken leading to financial penalties. Alumni giving, fan support, and funding goes down the drain. Play the season with 10 position players (majority freshmen) and 2 pitchers and risk player health. Continual losing through the PAC 12 decreases player moral and won't make a good impression with recruiting.
  15. Good to see Labrana continuing her fine form, also nice to see Tijana get her first dual match doubles win in a tight situation Now on to the indoor portion of the season, just a reminder of last year: Outdoors: 19-0 Indoors: 5-5
  16. 4-0 win over MTSU. Fernanda looked really good- much more confident and fluid forehand compared to last year Also it looks like Poluta did not make herself available for Fed Cup this year. South Africa named its team and I'm confident to say she is at a higher level than two of the five members on the team. Makes sense as this year Fed Cup dates are during indoor nationals (compared to last year where Texas was playing bottom of the league opponents) and Texas is a bit short handed with the roster.
  17. As I suspected, no Marta for the year https://texassports.com/news/2019/1/25/no-6-womens-tennis-preview-ita-kick-off-weekend.aspx Hope the rest of the team stays healthy!
  18. Lineup is out. B. Turati, A. Turati, Granic, Markovic, Labrana, Spasojevic, Poluta Doubles is Granic/Spasojevic, Labrana/Markovic, Turati/Turati No Marta listed for the weekend
  19. Ouch...now an eighth player is transferring out of Oregon. Any scholarship money for her!? https://www.ducksports.com/sports/20190123/oregon-ducks-senior-outfielder-alexis-mack-is-eighth-player-to-leave-program
  20. Looks like he isn't playing good enough to crack the lineup. Here's the lineup submitted for this weekend: 1. Christian Sigsgaard 2. Yuya Ito 3. Leonardo Telles 4. Harrison Scott 5. Colin Markes 6. Chih Chi Huang 7. Rodrigo Banzer 8. Johnny Goodwin 9. Nevin Arimilli
  21. what a choke
  22. https://texassports.com/news/2019/1/22/granic-earns-big-12-womens-tennis-player-of-the-week-honors.aspx Congrats to Petra for winning Player of the Week! To give context how big the Freeman Memorial tournament is, here are some winners in the past ten years: 2016 Hayley Carter North Carolina (seven time All American) 2015 Jennifer Brady UCLA (currently top 100) 2013 Sabrina Santamaria USC (currently ranked in top 100 in doubles) 2011 Maria Sanchez USC (former top 100 player in doubles) 2009 Irini Falconi Georgia Tech (former top 100 player) On most teams, Petra would be playing line 1. Her game is big (both groundstrokes and serve)
  23. UT played Ole Miss at the Miami Invitational just three days ago and won 6 of the 7 matches. So expectations are that they should win. Of note, Cleeve Harper is listed on the roster but on his Instagram he has it as Class of '23. Might be taking a redshirt year but who knows
  24. First weekend of play today. Might have to revise my assessment on Baylor, couldn't get any of their three freshmen to be eligible for the season meaning they'll have to play with a walk-on. Just lost to Hawaii today (last year UH was ranked in the 60s). Texas ranked number 6 in the preseason polls. This one was conducted by coaches, not the computers.
  25. I think she has some stepchildren if that counts
