i get the point you are trying to make, but if you don't think its a problem to beta test self driving software, which only is using cameras + AI, on the roads in general - i think we are going to have to continue to agree to disagree

this isn't a "it's bad for drunk people to drive" discussion, it's a "beta testing full self driving on the roads is bad" discussion.

I'm hedging a bit, because vision-only with AI could end up being a dead end, but my initial experience is very positive.

you are going to have to believe me and everyone else here - vision only is a dead end. not enough inputs. there is a reason that every other company on the planet going down this direction is going down it with multiple inputs not vision only.

Tesla literally cannot hit Level 5 Self Driving with their current setup. they can call it whatever they want, but it is not possible from a technical standpoint.

Let’s check in a few weeks.

The treatment checo is receiving currently is wayyyy different from last year. It’s pretty obvious. Thanks to the preseason dumpster fire!

check in a few weeks? lol i just want to point this out that he has had the literal shit kicked out of him as the second driver in the car for each of the 3 full years he has been in it

in two of the three years that they have been in the same vehicle, PER could have doubled his point total and still finished behind Max. doubled!

    image.png.40045154687d73583c19509bb9702eaa.png

2021 he finished 4th in the constructors championship, almost 200 points behind 2nd (HAM) and was 36 points behind BOT for 2nd. he won 0 races. Lewis won 8, BOT won 1. BOT finished 36 points ahead of him despite having 4 retirements and MB treating him exclusively like a 2nd driver and doing a bunch of testing on his engines/engine modes to help HAM 7x vs Checo's 2

2022 he finished 3 points off of LEC for 2nd, despite LEC having an additional retirement. he won 2 races, LEC won 3. LEC had 3 retirements to Checo's 2.

2023 he didn't grab 2nd place until HAM was disqualified at COTA. despite having a vehicle that was miles better than the Mercedes, he still only beat HAM by 50 total points. he had 4 second place finishes in what was very very very clearly the 2nd best car on the grid. Alonso had 3. Lando had 5 2nds. LEC had 3.

in the last ten races of the year, he had 2 podiums. NOR had 5.

i get what you are talking about, but no. he has never put any pressure on Max. even this year, even today with 3 races under his belt he is not 2nd in the WDC (1 point behind LEC, 6 points ahead of Sainz)

PER is incredibly lucky he signed his renewal in Monaco last year. i think if he had held off until the summer break i think they go a different direction.

Yeah; i would like to use the oven method but I'm gonna have multiple briskets.  I could definitely put one or two in the oven if need be.

you should put what you can in the oven then the rest in the cooler. it will make a huge difference, seriously.

i think i could fit 2-3 easily in my regular sized oven after shrinkage but i typically do a more aggressive trim than most.

    22 hours ago, dcbc said:

Preheat the cooler by putting a container of near boiling water in there for 10 minutes or so.  After the briskets rest, wrap them (and the paper) tightly in foil.  Don't just put a towel over them.  Put as many towels (loosely) over them to fill the airspace between the food and the cooler lid.

    this is the way.

preheat the cooler - i would go longer than 10 min but that's me

    fill the empty space.

the temp is going to drop a good bit, but if you do what you can in the oven and the rest in the cooler you should be fine.

i would absolutely not pull at 195 though. cook them to done then rest. you will wish you had done this if you don't.

how many are total you talking about here? if you are using a cooler maybe see if you can borrow a large(er) rotomolded cooler from a friend and do it that way?

Did he put pressure on him early last season?

for 5 races it was close, then Checo shit the bed worse than any driver over the last decade.

in a car that was drastically better than anything else in the field - Max clinched 1st with 7 races left. Checho didn't clinch 2nd until after the race at COTA, and only then clinched because Lewis got disqualified.

    even then..."pressure" lol

    Spoiler

wirecutter goes into it but basically all formula in the usa is from 1 of 4 companies

    https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-baby-formula/

    Quote

Four companies manufacture the vast majority of baby formula for sale in the US. Those companies are Mead Johnson (Enfamil), Abbott Nutrition (Similac), Nestlé (Gerber), and Perrigo (which makes generic formulas sold in many grocery and pharmacy chains and by other brands, including Earth’s Best and Bobbie). A few smaller manufacturers have more recently entered the market: ByHeart (made in the US), Kendamil (made in the UK), and Aussie Bubs (made in Australia).

    and

    Quote

Brand-name and store-name formulas are nearly identical. A 2017 article on infant feeding in the journal Pediatrics states this. Pediatricians Jenny Thomas and Anthony Porto both told us that parents should feel comfortable using store-brand or generic infant formulas because they contain all of the same FDA-required nutrients and ingredients as formulas made by Enfamil, Similac, and Gerber (which cost two to three times as much).

Perrigo makes basically all the generic formula you see and you can tell across the board based on top color/box style. they are the same no matter where you buy it. this gets super important if we have another formula shortage and their website has all their products on the top and you can click on it to see what is what and where to find it.

    image.png.1ae556485c9794f88b231cff8b0cfbef.png

here's an example for their "advantage premium" formula (silver top) https://www.perrigopediatrics.com/advantage/

    image.thumb.png.d0aefc43772f1527a2a2c8cb91d03254.png

we use the kirklands, can't recommend it enough - during the formula shortage it was hard to find anywhere so we did some switching out/around but Kirklands was stocked way better/more than everyone else.

looks like Perrigo makes the formula you showed above, but just know you are spending a fuckload, literally, for that vs something like Procare or "generic" formula.

that Bobbie is about $1.84 per powder oz (i'm sure there is some savings if you order ahead/subscribe or whatever) while Kirklands Procare is $0.69 per oz - the advantage premiums above are somewhere in the $0.70-$0.80 per oz range depending on what you get and where you get it.

here is some work someone on reddit did on a big comparison across the board last year on cost: https://old.reddit.com/r/FormulaFeeders/comments/yrhehr/i_did_a_comparison_of_all_the_big_brand_name/

    • bobbie organic is at about $0.93 per 4 oz bottle, ballpark at 8 per day for 32 oz / day = 240 bottles per month = ~$223/month
    • kirklands procare is at about $0.35 per 4 oz bottle, ballpark at 8 per day for 32 oz of formula / day = 240 bottles per month = ~$84/month

if you are 100% in on organic, the wirecutter article i linked above has some more info in it and offers an option that is much less expensive on a per oz basis - somewhere around the $1.39 / oz range

again - no judgement here around what you end up doing or organic vs non organic or formula vs breast feeding. just trying to educate.

don't let fucking anyone bully you around formula vs breast feeding. nurses at hospital will ask but that's only because they have to. if you go exclusive formula feed from day 1 there is no downside to the baby. if you want more info on the "value" of breast feeding Emily Oster touches a bunch on it in Cribsheet

be ready for the olds to ask you what you are doing, folks you don't know, everyone. EVERYONE HAS AN OPINION. just lie to their faces if they are old, you don't know them well and they ask - just say you are breastfeeding the baby

re: owlet - we got a great deal on one when kid #1 was born and little, wife used it a good bit. we have used it 0 times in 5 months with kid #2. its a nice thing to have but it's annoying as hell to actually use on a day to day basis.

re: monitor - i very strongly recommend the eufy spaceview pro. it uses basically the same cam and doesn't require a network which is a live saver. it also has a large battery on the monitor and you can turn it off while still having the sound on. if you need something network connected just get a cheap cam and use that. but not having to have wifi makes life SO MUCH EASIER when you are anywhere that isn't home - and even at home you don't have to worry about if the network goes down for a few minutes, etc. you can add a second cam to the setup.

the ubbi steel diaper pail. don't use the ones that require a specific brand of bags for it. this uses kitchen trash bags. shit is gonna smell no matter what. put it in a dog pop bag, then drop it in here and it makes a huge difference.

    image.png.9f56bad2005b675eafd3858ba72fe622.png

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00821FLT4/

you will get a ton of recommendations on baby bottles: we tried a bunch and ended up with the boon nursh system. it's all interchangeable, you have different sized nipples, you can use sippy cup lids, they have a straw conversion top lid - you can buy individual pieces too. very highly recommend them

    image.png.3137a775fe071b5fcb7e43b05228df21.png

if you end up using formula, just buy one of the formula mixing pitchers, there are a bunch of them that are all basically the same. makes life SO EASY. also if end up on formula, buy from costco/sams. the dollar difference per OZ is shocking and you will pay for the costco membership out of your formula savings alone in the first 30 days of having it.

Sorry, what happened? Bottas having wheel nut issues again?

    from VB:

    Quote

“We have actually an issue on both cards with cross threading,” Bottas explained. The team has acquired new equipment for this year, the honorary Aussie noting that it “is faster; it’s something that the top teams are using.”

He added: “With the wheel nuts, we tried to go for a route to make them super lightweight, so the material we are using is the issue.

“In pit stop practice over the winter, there was no issues, but we’re seeing that in races when the temperature gets higher because of the brakes, then the wheel nut [has problems].”

The 10-time grand prix winner underscored that the issue is with the hardware and not the pit crew.

“It’s more about components,” he said.

“It’s nothing that the pit crew is doing wrong or nothing the pit crew needs to change.”

Smoking briskets this weekend for Easter.  Need some insight.   My plan as of today is to start the smoke early in the morning, say 7 am and hope to be done in 12-14 hours if the brisket cooperates.  My question comes with the hold.  Now I usually paper wrap.  I'm planning to pull the brisket at say 195 degrees and then wrap in plastic wrap and a towel.  Then take an ice chest with a towel in the bottom lay my brisket package in there and cover with another towel and let that thing hold until the next morning.

Anyone have any expertise in such?  I don't have a YETI just a Coleman 5 day cooler, etc.

how long are you talking about holding? you get diminishing returns at a certain point - like 10ish? hours

i do the long rest in the oven, turn it as low as it will go and sleep well. don't have to worry about anything that way - i do this with the foil boat method but it is absolutely fine with peach paper. just remember to pull it from oven early and let it cool to cutting/eating temp on the counter - don't pull it, it then cut it immediately.

you will never do another one without the long rest, it makes a huge difference.

Do we put any value in that Sainz is the only person other than Max that's won a race since Perez in Race #4 of last year?

Not being sarcastic, but do we judge only on points or on the ability to win?

i mean, are we going to sit here and say he would have won yesterday if Max's car didn't die under him? because that's quite a leap.

Wins matter, sure, but so does overall performance. Last year LEC had 2x as many podiums (6) as Sainz did (3) - in 2022 LEC had 11 podiums and 3 wins, SAI had 9 podiums and 1 win. LEC beat him by 62 points in the same car.

even with the win last year for SAI, LEC still had a better avg finish and out qualified him 14-8 and had 5 pole positions vs SAI's 2. in 2022 he out quali'd him 16-6. in 2021 LEC out quali'd him 14-8. Leclerc has been the better driver in the car during their time as teammates, even with his brain farts and Sainz having 2 wins - based on points at least.

    re: 2023 Singapore

Singapore last year was easily the worst race for RBR since the the 2022 Bahrain double DNF. only time last year Max didn't finish on the podium and both Red Bulls were knocked out in Q2, article said this was the first time since 2018 that neither Red Bull made it to Q3.

RBR came in with subpar to bad setup, couldn't get it fixed (article said they brought a new floor and then they reverted back to the old floor for FP3, quali and the race? brough new wing changes too), made bad strategy calls during the race and got unlucky (strategy was to hope for a safety car for a cheap pit stops + tire strategy), and then paid for it by finishing 5th and 8th.

    per Horner:

until the last stint (Max on new Mediums, Carlos on 20 lap old Hards) Max basically never was running a faster lap time than Carlos - even then Carlos was holding the field up as part of the strategy. once again, subpar setup considering how dominate they were the rest of the season.

    Spoiler

    image.png.820f4dac250ad9bbaf6902b69cc41985.png

Sainz led every lap of the 23 Singapore GP, Max had 6 laps total in the top 5. Checo had 3. RBR had no laps in the top five after lap 27 of a 62 lap race.

Sainz did everything he could with the car and deserved the 23 Singapore GP win and yesterday's win for sure. but acting like he outdueled Max to win either race is incorrect.

lots of backroads, sure, but an incredible # of people driving in because of how close Austin and San Antonio (and even places like Houston) are to the totality.

oh man, i have a very hard time saying that about someone who has never finished better than 5th in the constructors championship, and only beaten the brakes off his teammate once since he left Toro Rosso (he smoked the hell out of Kvyat in 2017 54-5) was smoking 19 year old rookie Lando

last year, LEC had 2x as many podiums and outscored him despite SAI winning a race. the year before that LEC beat him by 62 points. the year before that he beat LEC by 5.5 points and LEC had a DNS from pole at Monaco and another retirement while SAI finished every race.

SAI is good, clearly, but at non backmarker teams he has very rarely been noticeably better than his teammate. he's consistent and that has a ton of value but at this point i think basically all of the top teams would take LEC over SAI.

Funny, I like Sainz and when you said he was second best my initial reaction was "Pffft. No way..."

Then I started trying to think of who is better other than Max...

    - I started to watch when Hamilton was dominant and he went so long without making any mistakes. Not sure if he has faded or if his car just isn't there.
    - Leclerc actually scores more points/poles, but I can't shake the feeling that Sainz is just a better race day driver for some reason. I'm always on edge for Leclerc to have a mistake
    - Alonso?
    - Norris?

None of them I can say they are better than Sainz, but I feel like he has a lot of equals. Then Max is just on another level. It would be amazing if Australia shows that Ferrari took a step to catch up with Red Bull and we get more battles at the front.

last year Leclerc, Alonso, Norris scored scored higher in WCC than Sainz. Hamilton beat Sainz by 34 points in a much worse car

in 22 Russell and Leclerc beat Sainz (LEC by 62 points)

Sainz is a very good race day driver and will do well the rest of his career. but if i am starting a team i am happy to take the higher upside of someone like LEC or RUS (british version of LEC honestly) or even ALO over Sainz.

i think h2h Sainz gets more out of the Red Bull than Perez. i think he's easily a top ~5 driver with Max, Leclerc, etc. but 2nd? not in my eyes. much closer to 5th than 2nd.
