  1. The purple asparagus is coming out strong
  2. I don’t know if they were afraid of the tree or the scary yellow parking block:
  3. That's great shooting with a light contour rifle. I have a T3 Lite in 270, but I don't shoot it anywhere close to that level of accuracy. Were you shooting prone or from the bench at 1125? Are the rings 20 moa?
  4. The biggest factor I’ve seen that seems to determine if people think it has “rights” or not is how much charisma is it has. I.e., Deer, cattle, foxes etc have people protesting; meanwhile bees, quail, bighorn sheep, and boatloads of other stuff on the ESL, etc have been having some real struggles and none of these folks are doing anything about that. This leads into another factor I don’t understand the logic of: I think they are more pissed that people are killing and eating the animals than if the animals were dying of disease, or indirect human cause. A new resident around Yellowstone asked an old backcountry guide “what can I do to help preserve the ecosystem around the park?” The answer: burn down your house and move back to California. We all live in buildings that destroyed habitat and displaced fauna. Farming vegetables on a industrial scale displaces fauna. Our individual existence results in the death of animals. Killing them to eat them vs driving them out of their habitat and/or into death by some other means seems arbitrary.
  5. Troph, I’m not giving the daquiri dude any clicks by going back and reading why you’re moving to the Axis - is it for surfing?
  6. What about insects? Do these folks not use bug spray, etc? E.g., pouring fire ant killer on a single ant mount possibly kills more “living things with a brain” than the total number of “living things with a brain” an average person eats in their life. As a species, we are committing genocide against ants, I guess?
  7. What about snails, oysters, etc. that don’t have brains, are they on the menu or not?
  8. That’s apples and oranges though. The Kalahari Bushman is a professional hunter in his element, a tourist from Seattle out for a drive with his guard down is about as far out of it as he could get. Most of the folks that get fucked up by mountain lions are hikers/joggers/kids playing (i.e. folks with their guard down), not hunters.
  9. Here’s what I’ve never understood with these people - isn’t eating vegetables “killing” as well? The carrot is growing, I pull it, skin it alive, and eat it. Where does it end? Where is the arbitrary line drawn?
  10. I’d wager it would go about like the mountain lion attacks here; if you can keep it off your neck you have a good chance of fighting it off, but yeah, you’re going to get fucked up, might bleed out on the way to get help.
  11. Yeah, that’s my preference too. It seemed like they didn’t make may 357’s years ago, do they make more now? I wanted a lever action 357 rifle years ago and they were so hard to find I just gave up.
  12. That should’ve said “listened”, damnit. It turned into an extra special day today, as my 8-yr old shot my late Great-Uncle’s Hi-Standard 22 for the first time. First time shooting a gun, she hit the steel 4/5 times, and really wants to shoot more. Hell yeah!
  13. Took my 8-yr old turkey hunting this morning, along with my late Grandad’s Marlin Model 120 Magnum. If you listed close, you just could hear a guitar playing Vivaldi’s Largo. Life is short, make the most of it.
  14. And now we wait... Had a Jake talking to me, but I think Ol Raspy intimidated him

    Ski Season 17/18

I took the fam up to Taos for spring break. One day of ski school at Taos was huge for my 7 and 5 yr old. I was able to enjoy skiing with them on greens the second day. I’d tried to teach them myself the last two years and it just didn’t work. Snow wasn’t great, but was just enough. I love TSV. I’m thinking about buying some land or a little cabin in/around the Kit Carson area within an hour of the ski valley. we stopped in ruidoso on the way back for the night, I enjoy the town, they just don’t get enough snow most years now for any enjoyable skiing.
  16. Yeah, and we were really lucky: the 270 bullet bounced down the barrel and actually nicked the spike buck he was shooting at. I don't want to even think about what a 300 WSM round or something which would have chambered, but the bullet would have been oversized for the barrel would have done.
  17. Here’s what a 270 case looks like after you shoot it in your 7mm Mag. My dad has two identical Rem 700s, and had a little “oops” last year. Some brass even blew back and cut his face. He doesn’t like to practice shooting; if he’d brought his gear out a few weeks before the season in broad daylight he might have caught the issue, but not at 5am on opening morning. I know for myself and most other people, this is the case: If you go hunting and haven’t shot your rifle since last year, your first shot is going to be bad; this one was just real bad.
  18. It would be convenient for the Gun thread, the Hunting thread, the knife thread, and the boating thread to be in the same forum; not to mention the “what tractor should I buy” type stuff that usually gets posted in the Help forum. Petition signed
  19. A friend of mine bought an older Malibu, we went up last week. Had a little tailwind here, but not bad for 17gph:
  20. If you mix milo into your corn feeders it seems to make the turkeys more consistent in my experience. They were strutting at our Lampasas place last week. I take the breasts out, and put them in ice in a cooler or refer with some kosher salt, just like I would a deer, but not as long, maybe 3-4 days, draining bloody water and adding ice and a little salt everyday. Drain, slice against the grain into tenders, batter and bread with Panko and corn meal and spices and deep fry. Alternatively, after the ice treatment, I butterfly the breast and stuff it with cream cheese, smoked Serranos, and some venison pan sausage, then bacon wrap and grill/smoke. You will not be disappoint.
  21. Does a harpoon shoot out of the mag tube?
  22. I haven’t used one, but the Nikon P-223 3-9 gets good reviews and the price is nice.
