Holy fuck, this is ridiculous. Just be smart, wash your hands, and go to the doctor is you get flu like symptoms. Shutting down the country is retarded.

I was on this boat. Seeing the virus utterly ravage Italy & Iran changed my mind. First clue should’ve been China (country that has never given any fucks about human life) going through unprecedented quarantines and fucking their economy. They wouldnt do that for something that was no worse than the flu. This thing is not something to take lightly.

    Dave Winfield was pretty good.

I literally outlined why he isn’t an apt comparison, but thanks for the input.

Maybe I’m not clear in my position. Tall & strong guys can be good ball players, but not at a physically demanding position like outfield. The ship has sailed on Stanton, but Judge could have a few more good years with a permanent move to 1B or DH. Winfield was tall but kept his athletic & lean build most of his career. He wisely didn’t try to turn himself into Hulk.

I hope not.  That's the kind of overkill response (phrasing) that could actually lead to violence.  Better to do a soft voluntary quarantine.  It won't be as effective, but will still make a big difference.  You've got to let those working critical jobs get to work, people get to the store if they need food, etc.

Edit:  Though let's see what the reality of NY's containment efforts are, versus how it is initially reported in our idiot media and social media numbskulls.

Lol. There will be very little if any violence towards the military. Most gun nuts & militia types will throw their weapons down & surrender at the first sign of a challenge, despite how much they say otherwise. There’s a huge difference between a paper target and one with a weapon pointed back at you.

60 games should mean 250 PAs. I don’t know what his walk rate is historically but even if you give him one per game that’s 190 ABs. You don’t think he can pull off a home run every 19 at bats?

He’s like Judge, every game that they play now they’re dealing with a fairly serious core, hip, or shoulder injury. That completely saps your power. I really do think this is the year the wheels fall off for Stanton. Dudes that big & strong just aren’t meant to play baseball, and sadly I think Judge will find that out soon too.

And please don’t bring up Winfield. He was tall but many of today’s players could snap him in half. There’s no comparison.

  5. I need all the money possible to survive the impending quarantine and/or medical bills, can’t risk it on on Encarnacion-level fluke. Even I can admit a healthy Giancarlo is good for 35+ homers if he plays in 110 games or so. However it’s clear we’re never seeing that Giancarlo again, as the injuries keep piling up. He’s already going to start this year on the DL, so my point is proven. I think 60ish games played this year and <10 homers is a lock for him.

    Yeah, Jeets!

Member when everyone thought Jeter was a dumbass for giving away Stanton? I member.

I also member when people said I was an idiot for saying Stanton hits fewer than 10 homers this year. Don’t look too stupid now do I?

They found some debris confirmed to be from the plane in 2015 and 2016 in the Indian Ocean.

  8. It will always be correct to say that the Red Sox were the last MLB team to integrate, that can never change.

Theoretically, it may not always be correct to say UT was the last all white national champion, because an all white team could happen to win a future title though some miracle. Maybe once the sport is reduced to 7 on 7 flag football in 100 years. Point still stands.

  9. I’m in my 20s and not too worried about dying from this. Would still suck to catch it though, since the long term effects aren’t known.

Sobering to think that if I live long enough, there will come a day when I’m old and will have to worry about something like this. And I’ll be the one listening to young people say it doesn’t concern them.

300 people have been killed on Texas roads so far this year. Maybe we should cancel cars as well.

And there’s been even more homicides than that so far this year. So we should just legalize murder since the law is clearly not doing anything.

Getting to R0 less than 1 is the strategic long-term goal otherwise fuck it all.  We don't still have the Spanish Flu running around.  It eventually was contained.

Slowing the spread to save the healthcare system has been stated over and over and over as the #1 goal right now and asymptomatic spreaders are the #1 problem that will prevent that goal.

It never really got contained, it just burned through the global population and mutated to a far less deadly strain.

The Corona virus is everywhere out here and Ebola too. People should stay away.

Ha, my coworker just bought a new house at 46 & 281, total boomtown up there. He has a son in middle school right now I think. He says SV has a freshman o-lineman that’s like 6’10 300 lbs or something. Wonder if he’ll blow up on the recruiting trail.

That whole area used to be country as all get out, crazy to see how much it’s changed. I could never imagine that commute but I guess some people don’t mind it. Heard they’re building a new HS up around there soon, wonder if that’s gonna screw up the SV sports teams.

It seems that most of the analysis is looking at the CFR rate and total death number but is anyone else looking at the deaths compared to the total number of recoveries? You can't look at much data because until recently the spread has been primarily in four countries China South Korea Italy and Iran of which I don't know that I trust the Chinese and Iranian numbers.  In South Korea and Italy it looks like 3 are recovering for every one person dead.

    That doesn't sound good.

There’s been a lot of talk already about how “recovered” is a useless and meaningless stat. Someone that tests positive, has mild or no symptoms, then gets sent home to recover on their own will never count as “recovered” if they don’t return to the hospital. But they will count as an infection.

But it’s just like the flu.  Or a cold.  Oh but it only affects the elderly.  Or those with cancer, immune system problems, diabetes, heart disease, smokers, or those named Edna or Fred who live in Chickenfucker, Texas.  And the heat will help keep it at bay, it’ll never take hold in Africa or South America at this time of year.   And a mask will protect you - don’t worry about your eyes and hands and clothes.  And we don’t need to test, we know it’s here, just make sure and wash your hands and drink your Ovaltine.

What I truly don’t understand from reading that article, is if it’s infecting the brain stem, causing fibrosis in the lungs, and fucking up the heart that bad, why doesnt everyone or even most people that get it die immediately or need critical care? It doesn’t sound like an infection that could ever only cause mild symptoms.

    fuck_this.

They're reporting risk for permanent lung damage even following recovery.  No messing around here.

A little bit of a click-baity title. The same Chinese doctors said in the article that they’re basing their findings on just 9 autopsies, and that it’s impossible to tell if it’s irreversible damage given how new the virus is. Regardless it really seems like it sucks to get infected.
