  1. The only movie I remember crying at as a child was Ben Hur.  When his mom and sister have leprosy and he can’t be with them.  Fucked me up Royal.

Now that I have kids, everything makes me cry.

2 scenes that get me no matter how many times I watch them (and I watch each at least once a year):

Band of Brothers: “…but I served in a company of heroes.”

It’s a Wonderful Life: “…my brother George, the richest man in town.”

Who is they? The Fed? The alleged non-political, election-agnostic agency?

I really don’t want to CR this, but the Fed’s rate decisions have political implications, one way or the other.  Whether or not the Fed is actively trying to assist the incumbent, or just trying not to help the challenger, or just doing their best to have as minimal impact on politics as possible, the closer we get to November, the less likely I think it is that the Fed does anything outside of what they’ve already announced they’ve planned.

the Fed is stuck in “monetary policy purgatory,” said KPMG’s chief economist, as it deliberates if and when it will cut rates. All options are on the table, including a dreaded rate hike.

I will be very surprised if they raise rates again this year.  They don’t want to tank the market before the election.  Raising rates is far more likely to do that than letting inflation stay higher than desired.

  4. Good thread.  I often lament how Austin has changed over the last several decades, and the last 3 summers have seeded daydreams of moving somewhere cooler.  But at least once each season I have an experience that reminds me why I live here:

-My birthday is in January, and in the last few years I have started 2 traditions: I go to dinner with my wife at Fonda San Miguel on my actual birthday, and then the Saturday closest to my birthday, I go walk campus, shop the Co-Op, and meet friends for beers at Mockingbird Saloon (formerly Texas Showdown).  Fonda is a reminder that Austin has world class restaurants.  Walking campus and having beers down there is nostalgic, but even outside of that, the weather in January is often fantastic and the vibe of that huge college campus is something you don’t get in most cities.

-The Capitol 10k in March/April is always a reminder of my love of the city.  Tens of thousands of people gathered to do something healthy and fun.  Live music.  Free shit.  Beer.  And many times the weather is perfect.

-Barton Springs Pool, Hamilton Pool, Krause Springs.  As mentioned above, jumping into BSP on a 105 degree day is bliss.  During the aughts I had a tradition of going down there on the week the first college football magazines came out each summer; some of the best solo days of my life.  I can’t wait to take my girls to jump off the diving board now that they’re old enough.

-Every time I walk thru the concourse of DKR at the first home game, I get goosebumps.  Thats my Austin.  And the pregame scene is light years better than it was back when Austin was “cool”.

This list could go on.  ACL, UT baseball, UT basketball, RR Express, endless restaurant choices, live music (even if there’s less of it), running Town Lake, Mt Bonnell…

The traffic is shit.  The culture of the city has deteriorated.  Everything is too expensive.  The politics in Texas is stupid.  And the summer heat might end up forcing me to move in the end.  But I would still easily rank Austin among the 20 or so best places to live in the country overall, and for me personally, I’m still right where I want to be.

That's a great episode. Liked the message and it's one my kids need to hear. I interpreted it as Afghanistan. His letter said it's super hot. Not sure Australia sent people to Iraq, but definitely Afghanistan.

Isn't every wife a throw blanket hoarder?

There were Australian soldiers in Iraq, at least from 2005-2007.

why don't you want to discuss the current economic data?

I’m fine with discussing it.  It’s just odd (and telling) that you run to this thread with your peepee wagging every time something bad happens.

I have a hard time seeing unemployment rise to the point of stagflation.  What’s it called when there’s moderately high inflation, moderately low economic growth (not recession), and low unemployment?

  7. Hader, Pressly, and Brown having an 0-7 record at this point in the season would not have been something anybody would’ve predicted a month ago; flip that around to something more expected like 4-3 and the Astros are 11-14 and nobody is panicking.

Everything else pretty much makes sense.  Nobody should’ve expected Arrighetti, Henley, Suero, or Scott to pitch well enough to win games.  Hell, 6 months ago nobody would’ve even expected any of those guys to have thrown a pitch for Houston this early in the season.

The Astros season got completely derailed by pitching injuries.  That might be something to blame on the front office, but I don’t see how any organization absorbs constantly having 5 of their best 7 SP on the IL for the first month of the season.  They really needed a lot more out of Hunter Brown and France, 2 guys who were relatively established compared to their other healthy options.  And then Brown’s bedshitting got compounded by Hader and Pressly running into horrendous luck.

Just the shit sandwich of life.

I sure the fuck hope it doesn’t but my feels tell me something is gotta break. What triggers it? Personal debt? Something else?

Spending is going to be reduced soon. We need a correction. I just hope it doesn’t happen prior to the election.

There is so much pent up demand waiting on rates, there is no way the Fed wouldn’t rush in to lower rates the minute it actually looks like the economy starts to turn.  And as soon as rates come down, another boom starts.  The deficit will come home to roost at some point but it won’t be before the election.

Gotta admit I could not stop laughing at the thought of the Republican nominee for president (and a former president) calling a NYT reporter named Maggie “Maggot” multiple times.  LMFAO.  At this point anyone who votes for that guy is an indefensible piece of shit.

Has anybody done a deep dive into the logic he uses to decide which words to capitalize?

If he goes to jail he’s not gonna fundraise shit. I think some of you have failed to realize how tapped out his base is. They have been grifted completely. DJT is the latest thing that may work against him. Now people feel like they are going to win when he wins - why just donate when you can buy DJT shares. Huge miscalculation.

I am excited to get to ~September when Trump can liquidate his shares.

True, it would mean nothing for his fanbase, but there is no way in hell Trump would allocute in the way required to sustain a plea. He would insert all sorts of nonsense like a five year old arguing with his parent.

"Do you admit that you called the Georgia Secretary of State and asked him to find additional votes?"

"Yeah, because there really were more votes, and I won, so I admit that the election was stolen."

No court anywhere would accept that nonsense as part of a plea. He's physically incapable of speaking truth without adding nonsense.

I initially had a much longer set of choices but figured I needed to pare them down.  I should have changed the wording on the “plea” choices to also include if he’s convicted without jail time.  In my mind there’s not much meaningful difference between him reaching a plea or getting convicted.  It might matter to his followers or others, but in terms of real world impact, the real barometer for me is how it effects his odds of being president again.

I don't think it's as binary as you're framing it. It's that there's more uncertainty and risk in having a child now than ever, and costs are higher than ever with median pay remaining almost stagnant. Even if it's not as much of an impediment to career growth now, having a child is still a massive burden that with little to no safety net, many couples don't feel they have the breathing room or time to responsibly have kids. So you get fewer kids, born later in the parents life

I agree with all this.  My point was that what seems like a logical fix (make it easier for women to have both a career and a family) appeared to have been tried elsewhere and not addressed the full problem.

I kinda feel like society has reached a point of ugly truth: having kids kind of sucks.  Even if you have the resources to accommodate them, whatever you don’t outsource is still a real pain in the ass.  Life has evolved to the point that we don’t need children for work or companionship or religious obligations.  So we are left with some pretty narrow benefits of having kids and a lot of people don’t see the value.  I say all this as someone whose entire life revolves around my kids; they are my primary source of joy and purpose in life.  But I wouldn’t really recommend having kids to anyone and totally understand why more people are choosing to forego the experience.

this is probably "i'm 14 and this is deep", but i'm curious about the change in "%women participating in the workforce" alongside "number of incomes required to achieve middle class household status" over time

say more, i'd be interested to read whatever studies you're referring to. I work at a danish company, anecdotally it seems like having children (and taking extended maternity leaves) is much less of an impediment to career growth for our female danish counterparts than I've seen in my experience in the US. But, that's highly speculative and anecdotal.

Studies show that the policies do in fact make it easier for women to have both family and a career; unfortunately, that does not translate into an increased birth rate.  So basically, even though it’s easier to have both in those places, those women are still choosing to have fewer children.

What happens if he is actually fucked here? Shit seems to be getting real real fast.

Wondering this same thing.  Not know king Jack shit, my best case would be a plea to house arrest for 1 year that would effectively make him unable to run or serve.  That’s probably asking WAY too much.  I consider the chance of Trump going to jail somewhere between 0% and 0%.

Who would you want as manager, based on availability, if Espada was gone today?

Only 2 guys I can think of who are available midseason would be Buck Showalter and Mark DeRosa.  Fuck no to Ausmus.  After the season they could look at Don Mattingly, Steven Vogt, or Clayton McCullough.  None of those guys make me all that excited, but I thought Espada was the right choice so wtf do I know.

  15. Christopher Nolan feature film rankings:

    1. The Dark knight

    2. Interstellar

    3. Inception

    4. Oppenheimer

    5. Dunkirk

    6. Batman Begins

    7. Insomnia

    8. The Prestige

    9. Tenet

    10. Memento

    11. The Dark Knight Rises

    12. Following

1-5 are excellent films bordering on genius.  6-8 are meh.  9-10 are films that people say are good so they look smart or sophisticated, but they’re really just stupid and intentionally confusing.  11-12 are mediocre for very different reasons.
