  1. How is Memorial Park for beginner-ish players?

I just started playing but am down 30 shots since i started a few months ago.  Happy with progress since i started in April but happy in the way one is happy with someone on My 600-lb Life who lost 300 lbs…. Easy to lose 300 lbs when you are fat as shit just like it’s easy to drop 30 shots when you suck and shoot 130 first time out ( just cracked 98 at Sugarcreek).  So still suck.

I still have clubs gifted to me that were made in 1999 but now that I feel I’m committed to learning and playing this game, I’m going to buy new clubs in next month.  I’ve take seven lessons and instructor finally told me my swing is far along to consider buying since swing is stabilizing a bit.

Long way of saying I still hate slowing groups down so if Memorial Park is for like players in the 80s, I’ll continue playing at random places…but I live right by park so it would be nice to go play less than 5 minutes from my house rather than hodgepodge of places all over Houston I’ve played at that are 4-5x further.

  2. My daughter was 3rd grader on 3rd/4th grade league that was way more serious than I thought.  Some parents acted like if their daughter was being scouted by UCONN.

Even as serious as parents were, I did not see one purposeful pass the whole season so check your expectations.  League was 100% pick and roll based and winning team had the better pg and defense.  So yes to advice above about layups and defense.

in this league, you could not double anyone whatsoever unless they were in paint and you couldn’t guard a girl in backcourt and no zone.  Rules meant to allow some fluidity in game so I hated them at first but then grew to understand once I realized that without these rules, over/under would quite literally be 0.5.  With these rules, over/under would be probably 40.

  3. Replaced a terrible light fixture with this one I made.  Bought white oak and dug channels up top for the wiring and the six black pipes for the lights.
This wood was so much harder to work with than regular Home Depot wood.

Also pretty damn heavy so had to put it up with help of handyman.  He had to hit the ceiling joists (?) exactly for large screws to go into.  It was a process but was happy with his work.

Where are you located?  Depending on budget, you may be better off finding a decent set of used "game improvement" irons.  I think for the value, they'll be better than an off-brand at Academy or Dick's.  You may even want to go to PGA Superstore to hit some demo clubs.  Figure out your swing speed and something that feels right, then try to find them used on FB Marketplace or some place like Play It Again Sports.  Just my two cents.

I’m in Houston and will def try FB Marketplace though for some reason, I feel like I want to buy something new.  Emotional decision versus logical, just like a car purchase.

however, my logical side might win out and buy better but used set.

  5. Just starting to get into golf so wanting to buy some clubs as the very very old ones I was gifted suck.  I am nowhere good enough or committed enough (yet) to get fitted….given that, where is best place to buy set of clubs….Just go to PGA store or Academy or somewhere else?

if I’m still committed a couple years in, I’ll do things like get fitted but I have to show I love it enough before I commit to bigger dollars.

Not sure where yet…just have seen great things about the area/city. Thanks for the input…I’ll check out the surrounding area.

@Tailgate Did you end up going and if so, thoughts?  Thinking of going myself

  7. While I hate Mack, this has been a problem for a while….maybe why we underachieved for decades.  I was playing 2 on 2 basketball in summer 1997 at an outdoor court on the east side of 35 when the starting UT linebacker crew came and challenged us to a game.  Clearly, we were athletically outmatched but hung in there due to two reasons:  (1) we played as a team and they did dumb one-on-one type bs but more importantly (2) we didn’t constantly smoke out in the middle of plays like all of them were doing.

Around 60 days later, I’m guessing this crew got winded from chasing UCLA RB’s when they scored 900 points against us.

  8. While this isn’t a show that will go on the Mount Rushmore for TV, I have enjoyed it.  I can understand what some are saying on pacing but I’ve never once thought that I regret watching it.  It is what it is….a solid 8.  Nothing more, nothing less.

And even dirty, grimy RF brings the heat.

If you need something to tide you over, you could do worse than the movie Rebel Ridge on Netflix. I heard it described as Black Reacher.

Not as enjoyable as Reacher IMO.  Reacher is just the right amount of masculine ridiculousness.

I felt rebel ridge tried to halfway be serious but also had some ridiculous moments.  Pick a lane.  Be Rambo or not but I don’t like halfway measures.

  10. When Aggie goes 8-5 next year again, I’m trying to figure out how they keep the payments going on the roller coaster….’Year one of Elko’ was obviously always going to be the excuse this year but the rationalizer-crystal-ball gets a touch tougher next year.

Marcel Reed will be junior with lots of experience…..click?
Two full classes of Elko recruits plus all the stud true freshmen that will play in 2026 so…clak?
we get UT and LSU at home again….click?

No breakup is ever clean, but only an idiot holds a grudge for shit that happened over a decade ago, especially towards a guy who brought us a completely revitalized program, massive national respect, and a fucking national championship.

Welcome him back with open arms. Put him in burnt orange, smiling and glad-handing in someone's luxury suite during games. Cheer like mad when he's smiling on the screen. When he's pumping sunshine, celebrate it; reward the behavior from him you want to see. If he starts getting ornery about this-or-that (in public or even in private), pat him on the head and have Sally come collect him until he's had his orange slices and feels better.

I don't think this program is so delicate and insecure that it can't handle Mack's peripheral existence. Calm down.

Sally, did you keep your house here or are you using Saban’s realtors?

  12. I bet some dork has already done this but my inner dork wants to know what % of people who transferred last year and are not graduating have decided to transfer again.  I just follow longhorns but seems like a decent percentage who transferred from us are transferring again because obviously grass is greener again somewhere else.

I knew some guys who used their Jester sink as a spit cup. For the whole year. Without ever cleaning it or washing it or probably not ever even turning on the water. It was basically full of hardened dip spit grime at the end of the year. It was the grossest thing I’ve ever seen.

That had to be some kind of record.

I know some guys who didn’t touch a boob all year even though they were at a UT dorm.
