  1. Got on another horror comedy kick. Obvious recommendations there are Tucker and Dale vs Evil and... Ready or Not I think you could say falls in that category. I watched Snatchers on Hulu, which is probably a B but made me laugh a lot. Maybe a bit of a "Booksmart" dynamic going on, except it's a girl who has a strange pregnancy.
Then, came across this movie that I'd never heard of called "The Voices" with Ryan Reynolds and Anna Kendrick which went straight to VOD. It's a.... dark comedy.  You know there's "Dark Comedy" and that could mean Fargo, or even Parasite, and then there are "Dark Comedies" that are really just horror movies with a tinge of comedy, and this one is not... quite either of those things. It's very dark, but has a very light feel. And the really light feel makes how dark it is pretty fucked up, and then on top of that I think it might actually be a pretty good depiction of a schizophrenic killer. The depiction of him and his surroundings on his meds vs off his meds was really interesting. Also I was surprised that it was Ryan Reynolds voicing the animals.

I can see how some company ended up with the distribution for this film and then said "ahhhh fuck it" but it's a... good movie.

I really liked The Voices. The theme song will stick with you. Some other “Horror Comedy”:

Mom and Dad - Crazy Nic Cage
Mayhem - Decent, helps if you are a fan of Samara Weaving but who isnt’t?
    Little Monsters
Happy Death Day, and the Sequel
Tusk - Hate it, love it. I love it.
What we do in the shadows - Genius
The Final Girls - Cool idea, worth a watch
Behind the Mask: Leslie Vernon - To me, this is a must see.
Housebound - Cool movie from New Zealand.
Krampus - Love this damn movie for the Holidays
Trick r Treat - If you haven’t seen this, do it
    The Babysitter - More Weaving
    Killer Klowns - Classic
100 Bloody Acres - Worth watching if you can find it
The Loved Ones - Is this Horror/Comedy? Maybe. Whatever it is, see it! It’s awesome.

  2. This is a great dating app filter. If she likes this movie, she’s probably legit.

Only woman I’ve ever truly loved we watched it the first night we hung out.

“You go back and you get Busy Bee!”

“How many years ago did he poke me?”

  3. You want me to strike it?

People don’t like to have fire poked, poked in their noses.

    My ranking:
    1. Best In Show

    2. Waiting for Guffman
    3. A Mighty Wind (But I freaking love the soundtrack, Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara are always magic together).

    4. For Your Consideration

Haven’t seen Spinal Tap in so long, not sure where to put that one.

  4. So a little tangent. I’m lookin at a friend’s Plex library and he just added a russian movie from 1979 called Stalker.
The description reads like a Stephen King/David lynch movie. It’s scores are 100/93.
anyone already familiar with this?  I think I’ll have to watch it one night soon. 2 hr 41 minute run time is a long watch for that genre and presumably in russian w/ subtitles.

I haven’t seen it but I have seen it mentioned as one of the most influential movies of all time. The movie snobs on Letterboxd (which is awesome) love it. It’s free if you have a Kanopy account. Check it out and get back to us!

  5. Oh shit. I just watched The Old Guard. It brings a terrifying thought to the whole Groundhog Day life. When you watch it you will know what I’m talking about.

  6. I really enjoyed this movie.  Thanks for the recommendation.
Of the same day time loop movies I'd put it second behind Groundhog Day, but ahead of Happy Death Day and Edge of Tomorrow.

All 4 of those are quality imo, strangely enough. I loved Palm Springs but putting it ahead of Edge of Tomorrow is tough.

  7. Ditto
loved the Lion of Love performance and reading some backstory about the artist its based on it sounds like an accurate portrayal.

    Ditto ?

    Ditto ? You provincial putz?

    Always wanted to do that.

  8. In my opinion it has to be in the conversation for one of the top artistic achievements- I don’t know how far back you go. I didn’t think seeing it on Disney would change my opinion that much, but I was blown away. I was chatting with a very skeptical buddy of mine watching it at the same time and I think I enjoyed his reaction even more.

I hate that Miranda is having to deal with the blowback right now. On some review sites/apps I’ve seen there is a staggering amount of people that are virtue signaling - and it ranges from “he should be ashamed of himself” to demanding it be cancelled immediately and anyone that supports it is racist. I was telling my kid headed off to college that Hamilton will be a dirty word on campuses within a year or two.

  9. What I keep wondering - how bad was his original counsel?? The two most basic ideas to vindicate someone it seems would be determining where they are during the crime and a visual ID. Did it say why they didn’t pull his cell phone records the first time?

  11. Amazing. I’ve been obsessed since it first was released and went out and bought the CD. My “married in to a shitload of money” ex and my kids went to see it immediately and paid something like 2500 a ticket (I was/am extremely envious but love they got the experience with original cast) and my kids are still obsessed with it to this day. We watched it 3 times over the weekend.

Love that people are getting to see it.

    Loved using the subtitles.

  12. Watched Zombieland 2 and enjoyed it. More importantly I am officially a huge fan of Zoe Deutch and will watch everything she’s in. Helps that her Mom is Leah Thompson.

Also - the post credits with Bill Murray was great.

  13. Watched the original Parent Trap last night with my kids.  They've never seen it before and I haven't seen it in 20 plus years.
It still holds up pretty well.  Brian Keith is good in it.
And Maureen OHara.  She was never not great in a movie.
What a woman.  She had it all

  14. My wife kept laughing at something on the iPad, turns out she was watching this.  She never laughs at a Ferrell movie outside of Step Brothers or Anchorman.  She really liked the movie.  I liked it for different reasons.

    I’ve watched it twice already.
