  1. Didn’t Mercedes start working two years before everyone else on the last major engine, the hybrid?
I will read that link but, at first glance my initial reaction is that Hamilton is showing an incredible lack of awareness.

    They did not.

Once the early regulations were mostly rubber stamped in 2010 for the inline 4s, they built a 4 cylinder mule, but then had to dump it (I actually think some of this tech went into the M133/M139 road car engines) when the FIA finalized the change to the V6 hybrid (at mostly Ferrari’s behest) in June 2011, which also pushed the new regs to debut in 2014. Merc then had an early V6 mule running by December 2011.

  2. Saw this on Reddit and someone posted his entire comment. With context, it's not unreasonable.
But yes, he certainly wasn't making these sorts of comments when he was dominating.

Yeah he did acknowledge his dominant car run as well in the entire quote. To be somewhat fair to him, he has always said he wanted closer competition during those years. I am relatively sure Max has even said the same thing at some point already, too. These guys are all super competitive and wanna race each other, they just gotta be diplomatic and politicky sometimes.

  3. Anyone know how long the wait at Dayne’s typically is?

Got here about noon, stuff was running out quickly once I got closer, but still had brisket.

Brisket is elite, but does need more pepper.

The “cheesy brat” isn’t a brat but was dang good sausage with cheese in it.

    Overall, really damn good.

  4. True dat. Of course, as the DougO curse dictates, I bought the Nikon ES-1 a few years ago to start trying this method. Then they came out with the ES-2 that includes its own negative holder. Also has some kind of Picture Control negative filter that you can download, so that it does most of the work in camera. But I haven't figured out a way to download it or similar one to make it easier. I can invert the color, but the color shift is still there. I think the wonky light I'm using so far is part of the problem. But it's just in the experimental phase, not too serious yet.

Yeah, that’s likely too (the light source). My current light has three temps of light which makes it easy to get a better base.

I dunno the light temps, but it says this.

The Cool Light mode reduces the orange mask that is present in color negative film like CineStill 800T, 400D, and 50D, providing color balanced scans with better color separation and less noise.

The White Light mode is ideal for scanning black and white film, as well as slide film that has been processed with the warm-tone dilution of the CineStill D9 DynamicChrome 1st Developer.

Lastly, the Warm Light mode is perfect for scanning standard E6 (or CineStill D6 DaylightChrome) processed slide film, as the tungsten-balanced light can produce richer tones and enhanced color separation, especially within the red channel.

When scanning Kodachrome slides, I find the “White Light” mode is best.
  5. I have the Plustek film scanner that they still sell today, as well. It's not bad but the process is pretty slow and tedious. I think the DSLR method gets better results in most cases. Color negs may be the exception. I never installed it to my current computer, though.

Big reason I invested in a DSLR setup, even though it costs much more than a decent flat bed scanner or a PlusTek, is because it’s just a million times faster. Dust can be a problem, yes, but it’s still just blazing compared to other methods.
  6. I'm using Nikon es-1 attachment on the 60mm macro for 35mm slides. Makes that part easy since you don't have to line up the camera and worry about movement. I have my old Nikon scanner from the 2000s that provides a negative holder, clunky, but it works with the es-1. I just played around with some little cheap LED lights for starters, but I have a more legit photo light coming to get a bit more serious and accurate color balance. That part is doable. But processing the color neg capture is a bitch. Can't get the conversion right. I'm not used to messing with RAW and Lightroom, either.
I will need a 120 holder at some point for some of my dad's old stuff. I wish I could rig it like the 35mm stuff on the end of a lens to make it easier.

I use a plug-in with Lightroom (negative lab pro) which makes it incredibly easy, but you can start with just inverting the black and white points. It will of course make adjustments backwards, though.
  7. Have any of you film shooters or people with old film stuff tried digitizing with a camera and macro/gizmo attachment or other somesuch thing?
I started poking around with it a again recently. I found that it really works great with black and white negatives, which I had never really tried before. But color negs are a major pain. Slides are hit and miss depending on the exposure but the originals never looks as good as you thought they did when you shot them back in the day. I just ordered an LED light to get some more consistent light source happening, but dust is really a bitch of a problem, too. Why does stuff have to be hard?
I have a shit-ton of old stuff of mine and family that I need to get digitally archived...though I'm really not that sure why.

I do. If you wanna do it super cheap you can use this just on top of a light source by itself. It’s expensive for what it is but makes it easy. I have the entire Valoi 360 setup which has been pricey but pretty great.

I also have this which I don’t use anymore after getting the Valoi. It’s okay but the film holders are not nearly as good (for slides it’s awesome though).

  8. I would prefer a Land Cruiser more like the old FJ version, the kind used in Africa by warlords with 50 Cal’s mounted on them.

Looks like we’ll get a rebadged Lexus car based chassis.

Well, the Lexus GX has always been a rebadged Toyota (Land Cruiser Prado), so we are getting pretty meta here. But the Prado is a BoF chassis (FJ Cruiser is also built on it).

All that said, it’ll just be on TNGA-F like every other new Toyota.

  9. It's an RL 2-sided Monarch with one very faint, non-affecting scratch. About as mint as I've ever seen.

    Hell yeah.

    I have:

    A G+ ish 2 sided Monarch
A VG ish 2 sided Presswell
A VG+ ish RL/LH Terre Haute. And really the LH sides are still RLs, they just don’t say RL, so they can be had for cheaper (until recently, but still cheaper than a true double RL).

Also previously had 3 beater copies (1 double sided Monarch and 2 RL/LH Terre Haute) that I found in the wild, but sold.

The first Japanese press actually rips pretty hard, too. Not like an RL, but damn good.

  10. Badass. Being able to see the the second most famous room in Graceland should be on every music lover's bucket list. (Since the public isn't allowed to see the first...)
It's been a few hauls since my last post, but to catch up a bit, here's some from the past few weeks.

Keeping with the Elvis theme, From Elvis in Memphis One Step hit. I hope to see more audiophile Elvis releases because there are quite a few more deserving of the treatment. (I still need to pick up MoFi's Blue Hawaii, speaking of.)
That's the limited to 500 edition of Eat a Peach by the Allman Brothers. The last album to feature Duanne Allman. RiP, Skydog.
Polyphia's latest, Remember That You Will Die, in LE Oxblood Vinyl. Ego Death, with Steve Vai, is enough to warrant the price of admission, but the album is stacked with single-worthy tracks.
OG George is still country music the way God intended.
Acoustic Sounds recently repressed Boss Tenor by Gene Ammons. If it's still in stock, brother, you could do worse. Jug is a top 5 all-time tenor saxophonist and here he is at some of his best.
Speaking of re-releases, this is the first time since 1982 that A Flock of Seagull's debut album has been available in the US. Space Age Love Song is a track that helps define an entire decade, to say nothing of I Ran, obv.
And finally, an American 1st pressing of LED Zeppelin II with the Ludwig hot master. Definitive, nuff said.

In related news, I upgraded my sonic cleaner with the spin-drying attachment and in-tank filter. Now I can clean 10(!) Records at a time and dry them without touching them. Here it is cleaning Zeppelin II by itself since the filter keeps the water usable after use, I can store the "used" water, which means I don't have to wait to have 30 records or so to justify the water consumption. Looking at the filter after a few runs is eye-opening. This also means I don't have to go through so many Kimtech wipes. The whole process is MUCH less wasteful now.
And SIAP, how was this year's Austin Record Convention? I wish I could've made it.

Sick. Which pressing plant is your RL?
