I hardly ever go to TG any more. I drink their beer regularly (it’s on tap everywhere here), but the giant tap room thing isn’t my scene. Pulpit makes a wider variety of beers, and it’s probably better, plus I vastly prefer the taproom (right next to where I mountain bike and trail ride). Lastly, Pulpit’s better people. Clark Lewey is one of the biggest pieces of shit I know.

Quick story on that- and maybe this will spin off into a broader conversation about how to act in an establishment that you own.

We went to Pulpit Rock first and had one or two before Pete's wife joined us.  She greeted us and then went to the bar to order a drink for herself but immediately came back, stating the bartenders were busy and she would wait.  Once it died down, she went back up, ordered her beer, and paid for it in cash (plus tip).  Pete joined us a little later and did the same thing.  An unknowing patron wouldn't have guessed in a million years that they were the owners.

Fast forward a couple hours and we said goodbye to go check out Toppling Goliath. It's a huge place, but was busy so we sat at the bar.  There were about 3 bartenders behind the bar but we kept noticing that a random guy kept coming down from upstairs, going behind the bar, pouring beers, and walking out to rejoin his group (Eventually. Sometimes he just stood there drinking a while).  Not once did he pay, or enter anything in the POS system.  The bartenders put up with him but he was clearly in the way and causing a distraction on a busy night. At one point, my wife looked over to me and said "man that guy's walking around here like he owns the place".  A quick google search confirmed that he did.

I didn't know anything at the time about Clark Lewey (I've heard plenty since), but the difference between his behavior and what we had just witnessed from the Espinosas was shocking.

I think they have a knack for fruit infusion.

My wife and I (mostly her) are friends with the owners.  Went down there in the fall for the first time, just to visit Pulpit Rock and TG (I was generally surprised at how much more I preferred PR to TG in every aspect but that's another post).  I had a beer there called Banana Straws, which is a sour brewed with bananas and strawberries. Sounds gross right?  Instantly became a top 5 all time beer for me and the couple of times I've had it since has only confirmed that opinion

Probably nothing if they didn't unclog whatever is plugging the main drain pipe.

It was ice.  Had they known that was the issue they could have warmed the pipe. As it happened they replaced and rerouted.

hate to ask, but what's to keep the drain pipe from freezing again?

They rerouted the pvc pipe that led from the furnace, across the floor, to the floor drain. It now travels away from the exterior wall instead of along it.  That minor temperature differential will make all the difference the next time it gets -25 degrees outside.  Even if it does freeze up again, now that I know, I'll just warm up the pipe.

  5. Fixed!  3rd crew in 3 days came first thing this morning and had it diagnosed and fixed within an hour.  The PVC drain pipe that runs along the wall from the unit to the drain pipe froze up.  That's it... 16 man hours and 2 expensive (and completely unnecessary) part replacements later, they determined that it was a 10 minute replacement of $10 worth of PVC.

As frustrating as it's been, it really wasn't that bad in the grand scheme of things.  With a gas fireplace and 4 space heaters, we've been able to keep most of the house at a fairly comfortable temp.  For the kids, the boredom of being locked in the house was a far bigger problem than the temperature within it.  As or the repair, it didn't cost us a dime.  Parts and labor were warrantied and the placement of the drain pipe so close to an exterior wall was deemed an installation error.

  6. Night #3 of no furnace, here I come!  This sucks so bad.  Guy today came, replaced two parts, and left 5 hours later having fixed nothing.  They're stumped.  If I didn't have a gas fireplace I'd be so hosed.

At least I managed to fix the dishwasher that died yesterday. It sits against an exterior wall. When I pulled it out (heh, heh) there was frost on the wall and the pipe had frozen.  Thawed it out and we're good to go.

You don't walk the dogs. You try to get them to at least step outside to do their buisness but some dogs are just not down with it, so it can be an issue.

I'm now entering night 2 without a furnace. Guys spent 4 hours working on it today but they needed a part they didnt have in order to finish. It'll be a fun story 20 years from now but right now... not so cool.

Jesus wtf... you're in minneapolis and they can't find the part locally? I went and got a big mac for supper to get out of the house... my hands froze the entire time even with climate set on 85 degrees.

The part can be found locally, they just didn't have it on them and it was after hours by the time they left.  Funny thing is that, although it's a big company, they didn't show up in a company van.  They were in somebody's truck.  They explained that 4 vans in their fleet wouldn't start, forcing them to use their personal vehicles.

On another note, the local utility company has put out notice for everyone to set their thermostats to 55 because they can't keep up with the demand for gas.  This reminds me of the part of my story I haven't told yet.  On the night the furnace went out, we first lost all gas in the house.  So, no furnace, no fireplace, no hot water, no stove.  Wife called the utility and they sent out an emergency crew which determined that the meter had frozen up.  They replaced it and got everything going for about 20 minutes before the furnace quit for an entirely unrelated reason.  Oh, and my one year old dishwasher quit yesterday too- that's awesome.

At least the liquor stores are open.

I am all for it, but I will believe it when I see it. This comes up nearly every session.

The biggest push back on this is from the Spec's and Twin Liquors of the State that don't want to be open on Sunday, and those folks are extremely generous to the folks that vote on such issues.

We went through this same debate a few years ago (and won).  It wasn't the Spec's and Twin Liquor types that opposed it though- the big stores were all about it.  It was the independent, small stores in small towns that didn't want it. The Bill in my state failed a couple times before it passed.

That has to be dangerous for their lungs.

Don't know how dangerous but it sure as hell hurts to take a deep breath.

I nearly wrecked today fishtailing the truck at 50 MPH (speed of traffic) merging on to the highway- luckily I somehow recovered.  The roads are clear of snow but the exhaust from the cars freezes and salt is useless in these temps.
