Ok, so we’ve clearly established that the major trends and economic averages in terms of incomes and costs, and likely ability to create and grow wealth, have moved way out of favor for the younger generations.

So here’s my question for parents: how are you dealing with this with your own specific kids? Because after all we aren’t raising averages, we’re raising specific individuals.

I’m a believer that as parents it’s generally better to acknowledge shit like this and try to help them develop strategies and way to cope vs just complaining about it or burying your head in the sand. I’m the same with with social media. I hate it, wish it would go away, but it won’t and it’s part of the world and my job, as best I can, is to prepare my single spawn to be able to deal with it.

I have no idea if this is right or not but I’m a huge believer in making sure I am a source of positive energetic for her. Not rah rah cheerleader shit, but just that I believe in her, and proud of her, and she has a fantastic future ahead of her because she lives in a world where she can make it whatever she wants. Don’t worry about conforming to anyone’s specific view of what or how she should be (including mine). And don’t get bogged down with the stress that can come from too many options (that’s a real thing imo). And that despite all the shit in the media, I think her generation (she’s 17) is going to do fantastic things - these kids care, they’re empathetic, and most I see genuinely want to make the world a better place. Which I contrast with my generation (X) - we were just a bunch of assholes in hs and college. The thing that’s strikes me most from the many teenagers I’m around though is a lack of confidence. My theory is they get so beaten down with social media, regular media, just negative messages everywhere (you aren’t skinny enough, you’ll never be able to afford a house, our country is horrible, gender roles are all screwed up and over compensated for, etc etc) that they are basically just scared shitless. They don’t have a bunch of years of examples of good shit happening to counteract the messaging. Combine that with just general challenges of being a teenager even in perfect times and it seems to me they just don’t quite know how to act or who to be. So I’ve tried as best I can to counteract all that with positivity energy. Not just preaching but in leading by example. Honestly I think that’s the number one thing missing from these kids lives. And our society does a pathetically horrible job of providing it.

Anyway, I could go on all day about it, and I’m sure I’ll get accused of being polyanna, but that’s my approach. Positive energy. Firm believer here in the idea that the energy you put into the world is largely the energy you get back.

    What are other parents approach?

Money in the 529, encouraging her to level up by doing things, reinforcing stories about people who accomplish stuff by going out and trying and continuing to try, “I love you forever no matter what”, “I love being your dad”, “I’m so happy you’re my daughter” every day.

What does it actually mean that a system disdains that - and why is societal value on personal ambition bad?

Your industrious neighbor founds a new company called Lulumelon transforming lycra into yoga pants for fat people. Youre not in the market. But fat people love the product and voluntarily reward the company with success. Your neighbor is massively wealthy and also generated new value in the economy. Why is that bad for you?

you're asking how it is that yoga pants on modern american fatties is bad for me?

When he talks about “unremarkable” people getting an opportunity this is what he’s talking about. He’s not saying we need sub room temp IQ people going to college, he’s saying that the average person is fucked and that the requirement to be above average to get ahead systemically in America is fucked.

If you're sitting here surrounded by even moderate success talking about how people simply need to become remarkable in order to have a decent life, congratulations on your privilege because you didn't get where you are by being smart. Most people aren't remarkable and it is important to all of us here participating in society that most people are able to have decent lives.

  5. Yeah I have a lot of respect for talented and highly principled assholes. Something about, if it stick to your guns on principled stands that are highly unoriginal or inconvenient, and you’re successful in doing so, being a huge asshole maybe makes you even more respectable.

  6. Here's a good rundown of the diifference between the 28 and the HD28. I think some of the details of how they do the "forward shifted bracing" has changed in the past couple of years, although that may only be relevant to HD28s. Short version is that in the late '40s, they made some changes to the D28 that involved using straight braces (rather than scalloped braces) and shifting the X in the bracing back a bit. They also replaced the herringbone purfling with the binding you see on D28's. Sometime in the 1970s, Martin introduced the HD28 as an alternate to the D28 that more closely adhered to the '30s/early'40s specs. I believe that sonically the difference is something like the HD is supposed to be a bit more complex and the D is supposed to be a bit more strong and direct. Both are going to sound like big full Martins and will be great guitars.

Ok if you change your mind you need to list it here. I love that goofy Gibson pickguard. It’s hog, right?

My least favorite guitar show moment:  I was dating a gal but had met a gal who would become my (starter) wife.  I'm not the kind to cheat, I hadn't strayed any farther than Jimmy Carter did.  So my then-girlfriend and I went to a guitar show at the Austin Convention Center, and I fell in love with a mid-70s Fender Strat.  I mean, I was drooling.  We moved along, and separated for a bit for bathroom/drink break, and when we were ready to leave, she says "just a minute, I have something for you".  She had arranged to buy that Strat for me.  I was apoplectic, I was literally going to (and did) break up with her that night.  I managed to push back enough on such a generous gift -- like mid-$3K range -- and we got out of there.  I did the deed a few hours later.

    I'm a dumbass.

Jimmyjazz music video that’s just this backwards

  8. In high school my sister took forever to get anywhere. I rode with her once and realized that she only knew how to get anywhere from our house, so she would drive from wherever we were to our house and then from there to the next destination.

  9. Wife was worried that nobody would come to Rory’s 3rd birthday party. We invited her whole class, the neighborhood kids, and some of her dance friends. Counting adults, roughly 50 people came lol

Have we discussed the Sam Ash closure?

I still haven’t made it out to the one here, right across from the guitar center. I’ve been incredibly busy or I would have swung by to check out what deals they have for liquidation. Overall very sad.

  11. I’m up to 150g of lard per pound of flour, still 1 cup warm milk and a tsp salt. I think more fat makes everything come together quicker - I mix the dry ingredients and the lard with my hands until it is like sand, mix in the milk while I’ve got it in the kitchen aid on 2 with the hook. It’s usually ready to be rolled into balls in a few minutes.

I’m from a very small town and it’s absolutely the reason my youth experience had a heavy Gen X vibe. We were very much 3-5 years behind on a lot of cultural trends.

Have you ever read Fargo Rock City by Chuck Klosterman? It’s been like 15 years but I feel like you would dig it. It’s kinda a response to Michael Azerrad’s “our band could be your life” (which is great, about the most influential bands in 80s underground rock). I think he opens it kinda shitting on elitist college rock snobs and talking about how if you didn’t like Motley Crue you never experienced it correctly - blasting in a single cab pickup in a cornfield. Something like that.
