The fuck we don't know how the transfer portal will work out. Other than a few outliers that the dipshits in this thread will continue to point out as the exception that proves the rule, the rich will overwhelmingly continue to get richer.

Even the dumbass examples you give support what I'm saying. Burrow transferred because he got hurt and couldn't beat out a first round pick at QB. And went to fucking LSU... not Oklahoma State or Texas Tech. We couldn't get a decent QB for damn near a decade, but if we were in the portal era it would have been a million times easier to money whip one to Austin instead of trotting out Tyrone Swoops and Jerod Heard and whatever brain cells David Ash had left. Poor Georgia's depth has been so depleted by the portal they've only won back to back championships while putting 8000 dudes into the league and are the preseason number 1 again. Nobody "lost" JT Daniel. He got processed the fuck out because he sucks -- USC to UGA to WV to Rice. You think Rice is getting over on Georgia in the transfer portal? You really think JT Daniel chose to be playing QB for Rice instead of Georgia? Let's hope the poor Bulldogs can recover in time from his loss to field a team against the rest of the SEC.

Got dammit I swore I wasn't going to wade in this cesspool of dumbassery, but here I am again. Fuck me.

I should also mention that one of Tech's starting DB's this year was UT's very own Tyler Owens who ended up transferring to Tech.  He's the NE Patriots #1 target on their draft board for special teams specialist.

But yeah, just another outlier.  What is the magic number before we can say they are no longer outliers and you admit that the transfer portal has good players going to these "tier 2" schools from "tier 1" as well?

    Quick summary:

    1. Tyree Wilson - transferred from A&M to Tech, drafted in 1st round.

    2. Tyler Shough - transferred from Oregon to Tech, has a lot of NFL scout interest.

    3. Tyler Owens - transferred to Tech from UT, top target for NE Patriots' special teams draft board.

    4. New WR who transferred from Austin Peay - one of the fastest players on the field when they played Alabama last year, accumulating nearly 100 yds receiving against the Crimson Tide.

    5. New DB from Fresno St. - tons of speed.

    6. New Center from WKU - also has NFL potential.

    7. New DE from Syracuse - being scouted by multiple NFL teams

But yeah, the transfer portal is only going to help the SEC and BIG and it's going to hurt the rest of us.  🙄

Plus their cheating culture during their SWC days.

No one who was in the SWC can point fingers to anyone else who was in the SWC when it comes to cheating.  Except maybe Rice.

There are still 22 guys on the field at a time. They need playing time and exposure to make the NFL. All of these guys think they can make the league.

For every diamond that gets stolen by a blue blood, there’s a talented dude on an SEC roster not getting the PT he wants.

This is gonna traffic both directions and lead to the same aggregate talent differential we already have. It’s just that the path to that point will look really different

This.  Mitch's fallacy is he thinks the transfer portal only goes in one direction.

Didn't TCU get two players from Alabama this past year?

Tech's starting QB came from Oregon, and Tyree Wilson (#8 overall NFL pick this past Spring) transferred to Tech from A&M as a preferred walk-on.  That's right.  A scholarship player at an SEC school transferred to Tech as a walk-on his first semester, and ended up being a #1 draft pick.

This is exactly why I don’t ever care to play A&M or any current Big 12 member ever again. Not one. Ever. Fuck them all. You don’t lose if you don’t play their game.

Um, got some bad news for you, Sparky.

'77 always comes to mind.  After Texas lost the Cotton Bowl to ND, they dropped from 1 to 4 in the final poll, behind Arkansas who they beat in Fayetteville.  Kentucky dropped to #6 behind Penn St. who they beat in Happy Valley.  All the top 6 had 1 loss.  Going into the bowls, #2 OU and #6 Arkansas had lost only to Texas.  Don't get me started about 2008!

Fred Akers first year.  Always felt bad for Coach Akers.  A really good coach who got close, but just couldn't get his team the championship like his legendary predecessor did.  He was the Danny White of UT football coaches.

I'm old enough to remember when we made fun of stupid fucking comments like this on Shaggy/Surly.

In fact, I believe it was squarely pointed at Aggy around a decade ago.

You're not even in the SEC yet and already going full Aggy. Lulz

Any playoff spot decided by a committee and not won in a pre-determined way set out by rules, IE in every other level of football from peewee to pro, is fucking stupid. Play your way in or out. Letting fat ass writers, coaches or anyone “choose” who gets in just chaps my ass. Playoffs should not be decided by money, favoritism or media. Full stop.
I know I’m in the minority. And I’m old and have never liked polls in any way besides some beer talk. The idiocy of polls is on display every year when teams are ranked higher than teams with the same record that beat them. They decide nothing. And I’m out.

Normally, I detest the use of the phrase "full stop".

But in this case...you are fucking-a-right.

Pretty sure the Big XII has had a rule for a while that one non-con game has to be P-5, so that's been 10 P-5 games for some time now. The SEC has a literal tradition of playing FCS teams in November and refuse to go beyond 8 conference game, I don't see the FCS tradition changing, and while 9 conference games feels inevitable, I think it's weird that there's been pushback and they are staying at 8 for now.

I'm generally fine with FCS schools getting a nice payday to give a P-5 program a warm up. They aren't particularly interesting for fans, but I would prefer long term that my team have an opportunity to figure out the roster, and an FCS opponent is a good opportunity. I'm not sure what kind of bonus would be needed for playing more than 10 games. It helps strength of schedule for the final analysis and draws more money into the team than paying an FCS opponent, so there are already incentives to not play FCS, but many programs still like it for a number of reasons.

    1. It's not weird.  It's all about the $$$$.  They want to try and get two teams into the CFP, and multiple teams into the bigger bowls, so they only schedule 8 conference games to inflate their win totals.  It's the same reason they will want to push for fewer or no auto bids to non-SEC/BIG conferences.  It's all about the almighty dollar.

    2. Coach McGuire said something in his press conference yesterday about the college football being the only sport without any warmup games.  NFL has preseason, high schools have scrimmages, etc.  Maybe we pay the FCS schools to scrimmage the FBS schools.

Sounds great to me.  I hate the FCS game ISU plays.

Same with me for Tech.  We have no business playing Tarleton St. this year, or ACU or SHSU* or SFA in previous years.

*SHSU does have a national championship at least.  But still, P5 should not be playing FCS period.

  10. 17 minutes ago, Hurtlocker said:

    So let's:

    • Remove any benefit from playing an FCS opponent, e.g. does not count as a win on the record
    • Force the ACC/B1G/B12/SEC to play a minimum of 10 P4 games a season. allowing 2 regional FBS/G5 games
    • Playing more than 10 either provides a bonus or provides a safety net as only your best 10 games are rated, with the other two being tie breakers.

Not doing that bars you from participation in the CFP.   Then everyone's resume would be at least slightly similar.

Your suggestion is lucid, intelligent, and well-thought out.

    BIG & SEC:  Overruled.

    Yes, seriously.

Any 9-3 team from the B1G or SEC deserves to be in the playoffs over any 2024 Big 12 team.

Bullshit.  That may be one of the dumbest takes on here, and that is saying something.   SEC and BIG are top heavy, and deciding on just 8 conference games and having the possibility of not even playing the best in the conference for YEARS proves this statement false.

Maybe your point would be more valid if they were forced to play the same amount of conference games the Big 12 is playing, and not be allowed to schedule the November cupcake game to rest and heal their starters.

If the 10-2 Big 12 champ played competitive games (or won) against Ohio State or Michigan, I don't think they're getting left out. If they schedule Incarnate Word, Long Island, and a directional Louisiana school while getting a bullshit draw in the Big 12 and win a weak conference at 10-2? Yeah.... I think that a 9-3 Big 10 or SEC team is probably better than them.

Ok, now do 2023 Georgia schedule.

    Apprenticeship, if you will...

Funny part to that is he came from Cooper, Texas, now a 3A school probably with around 60 kids in his Senior class.  There he is finding his niche.   LOL and SMDH at the same time.  If Tech has had a better BIG back in my lifetime, i don't remember him.

One of my friends on our intramural flag football team that freshman year was from somewhere around Kilgore.  Had to go up against Bam in a high school football game.  The guy is like 5'11''-6'0'', maybe 185-195 lbs playing DE in high school.  Said when he went to tackle Bam, it was like a freight train had ran over him at full speed.  Bam was bigger than any other player on the field except for maybe 1 or 2 OL, and he's just a man amongst boys destroying anyone who got in his way.

My freshman year at Tech I'm living in Weymouth.  Bam would hold court down in the lobby, just hanging out in the lounge.  Rumor is he was doing more than just hanging out and holding court...he was engage in certain business transactions.

  16. Raider Red does not take the shotguns on the road.  Those are only at home, and most of the time, it's a Saddle Tramp who shoots the blanks after a score rather than Red himself.  When I was in school we had two incidents with those shotguns.  One was the Saddle Tramp carrying them over to Red accidentally shot one while it was pointed down, leaving a burn mark in the astroturf.  The athletic facilities assistant AD, Ron Damron, completely lost his shit over that.  Then a couple of years later, he REALLY lost his shit when the dumbass who was responsible for the shotguns decided he wanted to impress his girlfriend and get a picture of him shooting the shotguns AFTER a game was over.  We all turned around when we heard them because that never happens after a game.  Damron and the campus police descended on him rather quickly.  It took a lot of pleading by the Saddle Tramp sponsor to the administration to allow them to continue the tradition and not have it banned because of the actions of one dumb kid.

Now if the big wooden pistols Red has as decoration are "banned", then that's just being stupid.  Those are just wood cutouts.

A New Yorker piece on willie Nelson described Abbott as being near a famous train crash site in west Texas.

I emailed the writer and said great profile but it should’ve read west, Texas.

She said she’d never received so much feedback for one missing comma and that Texans are nuts.

She's a writer for the New Yorker and doesn't understand the importance of distinguishing between West the town and west the region with a comma?

I bet she doesn't like (and by default, doesn't understand the importance of) the Oxford comma.  Sounds like the New Yorker's standards have gone downhill.

  19. I thought ESPN+ has become the de facto Big 12 Network?  I mean, if I want to watch Texas Tech volleyball or soccer, I can pretty much be assured it will be on ESPN+.

Meanwhile, Spectrum (at least Spectrum in North Texas) did not have the Pac12 network for me to watch the USC game this weekend.  I was pretty much anti-ESPN+ when more and more Big12 basketball games were moved to it over the past couple of years, but looking at that vs. the Pac12 network options, I rather have ESPN+ be the de facto conference network, especially since I'm already subscribed to it for the sake of basketball watching.
