no money shot.  busy cooking for the non-steak eating members of the family and forgot to snap a pic before digging in.  one side had good sear, the other not as deep a sear as i wanted, but i did not want to overcook them as they came sliced thin (about a 1lb each)

    It's like I'm there

  2. In addition to Redmont and Tutwiler, there's Elyton and some others. They seem to be perfectly nice. I would avoid Uptown and I would avoid Five Points except to go to Chez Fonfon. I don't think I'd stay there. Homewood is a good choice, as is the Grand Bohemian in Mountain Brook Village. If you're a golfer you could check out Ross Bridge which would shave some time off of the drive to Tuscaloosa. But unless you can Airbnb or similar in Tuscaloosa, your options there are very limited.

OK, from what I can tell:

Holiday Inn Express in "Tuscaloosa East" is way out (8+ miles) from the stadium, or anything else Tuscaloosa-ish in the real sense as opposed to a fanciful line on a map.  Nothing close by except an Interstate exit.

There is a Holiday Inn Express in Homewood, a suburb touching Birmingham and therefore about 55 miles from the UA stadium. Homewood has a pretty cool little downtown and some good restaurants, but you won't walk to any of it from this Holiday Inn Express because it is in a half-empty shopping development named "Wildwood" which has no woods or wildlife. While there you could romp around various chain restaurants with sticky tables, or maybe go check out this new concept they call "Walmart." There is also a Hooters where young ladies work because they love 40-year-old men who frequent Hooters. Oh and I forgot Lowes. Gotta hit Lowes tomorrow for more packing tape.

Yes that's technically Homewood but it's a total dump there. There are nice hotels in Homewood proper, and plenty of good hotels in downtown Birmingham.

There are frequently large game day buses that run from Hoover (another suburb) to the stadium and back. They are really for Bammers but they should be nice to you since every Alabama fan in the world knows we got away with a face mask that should have cost us the game last year. The ride back on the other hand could completely suck ass.

I just cracked up when he said the Baby Lionel (the Toilet Baby let's not forget, and who is enormous) can be the announcer when he learns to speak (Lionel drools).

Every time he said "Toy-lut Beh-beh" last season, I lost it.

    "But I weren't no turd. I was a baby!"

...and just like Austin, "Old Nashville" won't stop complaining.  Talked to a customer last week who was complaining that he doesn't recognize Nashville anymore and how sad it is.  Yeah, never heard that around here.  Old Austin and Old Nashville should pair up.

Yes except Nashville sucks AND has always sucked

  6. I don't disagree but I'd also recommend the Omni Parker House. You can easily walk to the North End but it's more centrally located so you can see the State House and the Common right there too. Plus they invented the Boston cream pie there and my colleague who ate two every day we were there for a week swears by them.

And I missed the earlier posts but if I had a large crowd, including kids, I'd probably go to Mother Anna's in the North End. It's not the best restaurant there by any stretch of the imagination, but it's affordable and the lobster ravioli and Chicken Creation are legitimately excellent.

And no person who goes to the North End should skip Mike's. The experience is memorable and the cannolis are good.

  7. Actually the best breakfast spot is the City Cafe in Northport but it’s not open on Saturdays

Yeah, about 20 years ago they took the Strip, which at one time was a stretch of quirky dives, and tore it to bits and remade it into a mall food court.

Not that it was great in olden days, but at least it was original.

Gallettes is the only "old" place I know of, depending on your definition of "old." I guess Egans finally caved in.

Egan’s was gross. The old Houndstooth slammed.

Since this got no traction, I’m reposting in another gun thread.

Local news just had an interview with a veteran advocating for mental health awareness, which of course I am all for.

Problem was, the reason he is an advocate is because 13 years ago he took his wife hostage and attempted suicide by firearm.  Horrible and way too common among veterans (the suicide part, not necessarily the hostage part).  He admitted he sees himself as the "enemy" inside his own home and has taken steps to secure his firearm within his home so it is harder for him to access, in case of another incident.  This is part of the program he is advocating for as well.  Essentially, making your firearm more secure within your home.

I have every sympathy for veterans and their mental health.  One of my good friends was a Marine sniper who took his own life a few years back.

    Now, my basic question is:

Wouldn't it make more sense to just...not have a gun?  Why does he need a gun?  He's already proven he may not be the most trustworthy person to have a gun.  Why is that logical step just too much to take here?

In a rational world he would have been adjudicated mentally ill and then categorically restricted from owning guns under federal law.

When Uncle Baby Billy is at Cousins' Night showcasing his show and gets everybody to introduce themselves, he is walking around the table and Keefe starts to say something and UBB just says "uh uh" and keeps moving - that is one of the funniest things I have ever seen in my entire life. I have been laughing about it for nearly a week, several times a day.

    I still laugh

Hey Brooke said you were looking for recommendations on bars to hit in ttown- the strip will be a shit show but definitely make sure you get to Galletes and get a yellowhammer and the Houndstooth is a pretty bumping place on gameday. CopperTop or Rythm and Brews in downtown Tuscaloosa would both be great spots to tailgate/pregame that won’t have as big of a crowd as the main spots. Of course there is always Innisfree but they will be charging a $40 cover to get in there…best bet would be to hit the strip like an hour and a half- two hours before kickoff and then hit the bars up there then, it’s a legit shitshow of people these days

    any insight on these spots

Houndstooth sucks. It's just a big open concrete sports bar. It used to be cool but they tore it down.

Gallettes is right by the stadium. It's cheap, with good drinks, but will be slammed. Still I recommend it over downtown and then the long walk in.

If this is the same cunt that made Dunkirk, his film making rights should be permanently revoked.

That movie was 100% dogshit.   He fucking sucks.  He could make 10 of "The Godfather" and it wouldn't make up for Dunkirk.

    Dunkirk was excellent

  12. Tom doesn't care about power. He cares about prestige. He hordes information and absorbs pain and contempt for the purposes of achieving prestige. It's the foundation of his personal insecurity. A CEO that actually does nothing is a perfect job for him.

I bet his childhood dream was to grow up to be Vice President of the United States.
