Pretty damn funny scenes. The Drum v. Ouiser rivalry is great. M’Lynn’s grief is so raw and real. Sally Field is an amazing actress. Also peak Julia Robert’s hotness.

I always group Steel Magnolias and Terms of Endearment together because of Shirley MacLaine and the mother-daughter dynamic. A terrific movie shot in Houston in the 80s. Peak Jack Nicholson charm. The lunch scene at Brennan’s is a personal favorite of mine. Also I like Debra Winger.

Also has one of Jack Nicholson's all time best lines, in response to Shirley MacLaine telling him she loves him:

"well, I don't know what else to say except my stock answer."

    "which is?"

    "I love you too, kid."

A few months ago we had a holiday party for work where our international team was in town and I was running the show.  We originally were at one place and move to another.  Somehow, despite texts, email, verbal conversation that week and day of telling here where when and how to get there, she went to the original place instead.  Mind you, I told her one time MONTHS before the original place.  Of course she goes to the wrong place, then complains that I didn't tell her it moved (easily 3 verifiable in writing things day of, including 2 texts up from where she was complaining I didn't tell her), and she was running late anyway because she always is from work and then had to back track 35 minutes and was an hour late.

I can't stand people being late.  I take it as complete disrespect to me and the event.  She really does try but work days are hard for her because she works at and owns her own salon.  But man, I had a hard time that day not being pissed.

I do not invite my wife to any work functions. She doesn't want to go, I don't want her to go, problem solved.

  3. That's how you do it.

When I was in college, I spent a summer working for a professional hunting guide near Denali. We had a very friendly fox nearby with pups (his name was Fat Boy; we never saw the female). In the afternoons I would walk in the woods with Fat Boy about twenty feet behind me and hunt red squirrels with a .22 short. He'd grab the squirrel, run it back to his den, and then come back to me and sit down, waiting for the next move. Pretty cool.

The new line of air rifles pushing 1100-1200fps are wild.  Basically 22's.  We were excited back in the day to match half that in terms of velocity.  Having that ONE shot that you had to make count was so important back in the day.  I remember my first duck, we brained two greenies on a stock tank, cleaned them and ensued to cook the worst duck anyone in the planet has even tasted.  I think it turned me off duck for decades until I had some from someone who knew what they were doing.

I have a Gamo with a scope on that. I live on a 1.5 acre wooded lot and squirrels have been chewing on my house. I have killed probably 25 squirrels in the past month with it. It is pretty awesome being able to tattoo a squirrel that's 60 feet up in a tree with an air rifle.

we're booked for ten days in March.  Florence > Rome > Naples.  We've got friends living in Rome, so we structured the trip to spend a few days Florence, extended weekend in Rome, and a few days in Naples.  The vagaries of the calendar being what they are, we elected to head straight to Florence after landing in Rome so as not to burn an additional day travelling.

Question for the initiated:  how long should I anticipate it will take to clear customs at Fiumicino?

We booked one of the Florence in a day tours to bang out the big hits on day 1 so we can spend the other days getting lost and eating

Coliseum Underground and Pristine Sistine booked as well so we can bang out this hits and spend the rest of the time getting lost and eating

Only thing we've booked in Napoli is a culinary backstreets tour the internet seems to think highly of.  National Museum, Herculaneum, Statue of the Veiled Christ on the agenda.  Probably won't have time to visit Secondigliano, much to my chagrine <sucks teeth>. rest of the time getting lost and eating

    Open to recs, mofos

    'ta poste

If you've never been and you're going to Herculaneum you should try for Pompeii as well.

Just found this 35 year old Daisy BB/pellet pistol on the back of a closet shelf.
It belongs to one of my sons who apparently forgot it when he moved out 30 years ago.

I just tried it out in the back yard, and it seems to work fine.
Guess he’ll have a surprise next time he comes over.

Being a helmet school is still going to carry some weight.  As much as the rest of the world wants to see y'all completely tank, you're still going to win a lot of games in the coming years.

Just probably not 8 out of 14 national championships, or whatever that crazy stat ended up being.  Sorry about that.

I agree and the larger playoff format will keep us relevant. But it won't be the same and I'm not sure the local proletariat will be able to handle it.

That’s the last thing my checkbook needed to hear after yesterday which brings me to this question. What is this black thing forward of the side charging handle?

    IMG_8520.png

That looks like a ramp to make sure the charging handle doesn't get caught on anything accidentally. Brush, rope, whatever, will be pushed up and over.

Seems crazy to me that Bama didn't prepare for this and start working on a more robust NIL infrastructure. Did they really think nothing was gonna change after Saban left?

They tried but there's just not that kind of money compared to a lot of places. Alabama's place in the sun is over.

Part of why Downs is gone, and why multiple other guys might be leaving, is that Deboer and Byrne immediately gutted the support staff. As was told to me today by someone there - Downs lost his position coach, his position support coach, his player personnel contact, and everyone he dealt with on the health, wellness, and nutrition front, all in the span of 4 days. He went from having no interest in leaving to wondering why in the fuck he was staying. His family member or agent had already received outreach from Ohio State, so in the portal he went.

I have not heard anything about the support staff. DeBoer tried to hire Downs' position coach as the DC but he declined and went to UGA.

Like I said, Bond is very very good. He was my favorite WR this year by far. I don't think WRs matter that much if Milroe is the QB because he is so limited as a passer.

Again, anybody who thought Saban would retire but that everything would still be fine at Alabama is an idiot. I think all this attrition is totally understandable and getting upset is stupid.

Being a WR for Milroe is like the old joke about Helen Keller's dog running away

Sayin is a genuine headscratcher. Downs and Bond are huge kicks to the nuts. I am really curious how next year looks for Bama, but my guess is 9 wins.

Sayin makes sense to me. There are better coaches out there and unless DeBoer has the guts to walk into the QB room and say "Milroe thanks for the memories but you're out and Sayin you're the man now" (which would probably lose him every decent player on the team) then Sayin can enter the portal and sky's the limit. I get it.

Downs is a huge loss. He was among the best freshmen I've ever seen at Alabama. Bond is very good but I don't think his loss is that big.

Mackovic was a good coach and even won a few conference championships, but he was also a tremendously arrogant prick.

I'm not saying DeBoer is Mackovic, but he sure is acting like him for no reason at all currently.  Should be fun to watch.

How is he acting like anything? I have heard him talk one time and I live in Birmingham. I think he's just trying to put together a staff, retain as many players as possible, and retain as many recruits as possible.

  13. I don't understand why everybody is upset. There is no "good time" to lose the best coach of all time. His leaving obviously has negative consequences for retention and recruiting. Furthermore, these kids went to Alabama mainly to play for and be developed by Saban. Once he left how can you possibly be upset at the player for making decisions in his own best interest? And by the way acting like a douche who is owed loyalty by students from all over the country will not be helpful for recruiting in the long run.

Wish them well, thank them for their effort and loyalty, and go recruit your ass off and then kick off late August and let's play the fucking game.

  16. In other news, I've posted here about trying to find a decent left-handed rifle for my son's first deer gun. I finally found one in time for xmas, when a dealer friend sold me this rifle in 7-08 and a Leupold scope for cost, bore sighted it, and threw in the rings for free. Smoking deal.

I really like this rifle. Took it to the range and it was sub-MOA out of the box. I see where Christensen quality is a little inconsistent, but this action and trigger are great. I think this will be a life-time gun for the guy.
