Alright, I cracked the lid on my BGE and I’m ready to step up to an offset/stick burner after 8 years of practice with lump on the BGE. Does anybody have any advice or input on the following three options?
Lonestar Grillz https://lonestargrillz.com/collections/smokers/products/20-x-42-offset-smoker
Lyfe Tyme Inc - 20l 20”x40” single lid offset

Klose - 20”x42” without 1/2” firebox

These are all $1600-$1900 and I’m not really looking to go over $2k. I’ve had a hardon for the idea of a Klose forever, but the LSG actually looks like a better design with plate construction giving a lot more real estate inside compared to pipe. I’m also not wanting to wait forever to find a used Klose because football and smoking season is a week away and I need something to distract me from how pitiful USC will be this year.
There are some decoders online if you want to hammer out the date. I picked a handle of 80 proof AN Turkey from ‘09 last year but haven’t thought of a reason to open it.
Yeah, I’ve got a 114.4 proof open and it’s really good. I bought them every time I found them for $40 or under and used one or two in trades. It’s nothing like an older MGP or Barton rye, most comparable to Handy in that it’s young and hot-ish but packed with rye spice and citrus. It crushes even 10+ year Alberta ryes as well.
I bought a dovetail because I found it for $74 and the salesman had just whipped out an EH Taylor SiB from the back room and I was feeling generous. It’s about 1/2 as good as Blood Oath Pact 5 which I’ve seen as low as $88.
I have a 14 yr Barrell store pick from OLC that’s pretty solid, but overall there’s a lot out there better for the price.
I have a bottle of the Canadian Club 41 yr and can safely assure you it’s not the dominant flavor profile in Little Book 02.
Also picked up a bottle of the Old Ezra 7 in trade for a WFE 4 yr rye and would say it’s pretty much the best Barrel Strength on the market for $40.
I love Little Book 02 and have a spare bottle because it will eventually be hard to find. At the $89 Specs price it’s kind of a no brained. There’s some type of toasted marshmallow note in there that I just love, but the palate is pretty similar to OF1910 if you’re looking to save a few bucks.
Guy now wants 2 W12s and the store pick. Not sure I want to do that when I could easily get 450 for them
ORVW is not that great. It goes for more than GTS on secondary but you’d have to be a huge wheater fanboy to like it more. Like anyone else I’d buy at retail but you need to try it before unloading that much for it. If you’re in Austin it’s $15 at Oasthouse. Or $16/2 oz at the golf club in my neighborhood.
Not worried about $50 OWA, that should effectively killl the secondary except for NCF single barrels. Should have popped W12 up to $85 while they were at it to knock off that stupid hording and flipping game.
Speaking of $85, Yellowstone 2018 LE is all over TW and other locations right now. It’s really good, nice proof, excellent caramel notes, quality oaky finish and sitting on shelves. Go get it.
People have talked a lot of shit about it online and it’s one of the lowest priced PHC bottles on the secondary. But i had a pour at Oasthouse last week and really enjoyed it. Was expecting the orange finish to overpower but it’s actually really low key. I’d buy the hell out of it at retail and I’m considering paying $135 for a bottle.
I think they can get more 1910 out in short order so I’m not sure there’s a need to stock up. Based on some podcasts I’ve heard it’s the last in the Whiskey Row series but all will continue to be available. The rye is supposed to come out in ‘19 as well.
