  1. dal makhani - served with Trader Joe's paratha, which are excellent 3/4 cup whole black gram beans (sabat urad) 2 tablespoons adzuki beans or pink beans (choti rajma) 2 tablespoons split chickpeas (chana dal) 1 cup plain whole-milk yogurt, whisked 2 cups finely chopped onions 1 1/2 cups chopped tomatoes 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh ginger 1 teaspoon turmeric 1 teaspoon ground cardamom 1 teaspoon paprika 1/2 teaspoon chili powder 2 teaspoons salt 3 tablespoons sunflower or safflower oil 1 1/2 teaspoons minced garlic 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin 3/4 teaspoon garam masala 1/2 cup plain low-fat yogurt Combine the legumes with 4 cups water (I used 2 cups water, 2 cups vegetable broth) in a large saucepan and bring to a boil; cook, uncovered, for 2 minutes. Turn off the heat and cover the pot; let the legumes soak for 2 hours. Add the whole-milk yogurt, 1 cup onions, tomatoes, ginger, turmeric, cardamom, paprika, chili and salt to the pot and bring to a boil once more. Cook, partly covered, over low heat for 90 minutes, or until the dal is very soft. Turn off the heat and purée the dal for about 1 minute; it should be saucy but not soupy. To make the tadka, heat the oil in a small saucepan over high heat. When the oil is hot, add the remaining cup of onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften, 3 to 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring constantly, until medium brown. Turn off the heat and stir in the cumin and garam masala. Transfer the dal to a large bowl and cover with the low-fat yogurt; top with tadka, stir gently and serve.
  2. vegetarian SB snacks white bean hummus and muhammara baba ganoush buffalo cauliflower. homemade ranch kind of sucked, will probably stick with the packet next time lulz. will pull and post any of the recipes if anyone wants them. i made pretty big batches of the dips/spreads and will use the leftovers as the bases for lunches throughout the week. the white bean hummus and baba ganoush were both "i don't know if I can buy store bought again" level good. next time i will make tabbouleh to go with the baba ganoush - that would have gone great with it.
  3. some cooking, some assembling vegetarian breakfast tacos - refried white beans and cheese, homemade pickled beets, homemade pickled red onions, avocado, japs, salsa. delicious
  4. Of course - Republicans are fundamentally dishonest. They uniformly worship a pathological liar. Trump doesn’t have the support of 99% of Republicans in spite of his complete dishonesty, he has it precisely because of it.
  5. yep. every one of these Republicans, along with Trump, need to be dragged out of their buildings and strung up.
  6. not sure why anyone would expect anything else. 100% of all current Republicans are complete and utter frauds.
  7. ^^^ mainstream Republican
  8. the best and brightest minds of today's Republican party
  9. and not a single Republican speaks up about it.
  10. of course - 100% of Republicans act in bad faith at all times.
  11. hey look, a Republican pretending to do the right thing.
  12. that would be great; however, hard, miserable years in prison would be highly preferable. executed for treason, even better.
  13. went to The Peacock last night. in the new Proper Hotel. probably not my personal ideal spot for a date night because it was crazy loud in the dining room, but the food was top notch. the dining room is right next to a very busy and loud bar, and the wall separating the two areas has windows built into them that they had propped open. posting here because there isn't a "new" or "nice/fancy" restaurant thread like i seem to remember OTS - and the noise is probably less of an issue for other folks than me (i'm getting old, ha). it is billed as Mediterranean, but seems far more Middle Eastern IMO - lots of tajines. i suspect that is a marketing issue. shared the roasted carrots with yogurt and blood oranges and pistachios to start, and the fish (cod) tajine with fennel and saffron broth, preserved lemons and olives, and shared a side of saffron rice with pistachios and dill. also tried the tajine with lamb meatballs in a spicy tomato sauce with barberry and peas and mint. shared baklava and a sticky date pudding with homemade vanilla bean ice cream. all of it was excellent. the date pudding is one of the best desserts i have ever had in austin. solid A. will be going back soon for sure - probably on a weeknight when its probably a bit more subdued than a Friday night at 730. they said they are opening a Oaxacan restaurant on the 5th floor of the hotel in about a month. mmmm.
  14. it is, and any vote for any Republican is support for and complicity in that treason.
  15. Donald Trump is way, way dumber than your average con doing hard time in the pen. And cares about his country way, way less. And 100% of Republicans fully support him.
  16. 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 pound sweet potatoes (about 2 medium sweet potatoes), peeled and cut into 3/4-inch cubes 1 medium yellow onion, chopped 3 tablespoons Thai red curry paste 3 garlic cloves, minced (about 1 tablespoon) 1 (1-inch) piece fresh ginger, peeled and grated (about 1 tablespoon) 1 red chile, such as Fresno or serrano, halved, seeds and ribs removed, then minced 1 teaspoon ground turmeric 1 cup red lentils, rinsed 4 cups low-sodium vegetable stock 2 teaspoons kosher salt, plus more to taste 1 (13-ounce) can full-fat coconut milk 1 (4- to 5-ounce) bag baby spinach ½ lime, juiced Fresh cilantro leaves, for serving In a Dutch oven or pot, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil over medium-high. Add the sweet potatoes and cook, stirring occasionally, until browned all over, 5 to 7 minutes. Transfer the browned sweet potatoes to a plate and set aside. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil to the pot and set the heat to medium-low. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until translucent, 4 to 6 minutes. Add the curry paste, garlic, ginger, chile and turmeric, and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the lentils, stock, salt and browned sweet potatoes to the pot and bring to a boil over high. Lower the heat and simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until the lentils are just tender, 20 to 25 minutes. Add the coconut milk and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the liquid has reduced and the lentils are creamy and falling apart, 15 to 20 minutes. Add the spinach and stir until just wilted, 2 to 3 minutes. Off the heat, stir in the lime juice and season with salt to taste. Divide among shallow bowls and top with cilantro and coconut flakes, if using.

  19. Now THAT is great leadership. -All Republicans
  20. this for sure. for the past couple years or so i have had salad or a vegetarian meal for lunch on work days at least 4 of 5 days of the week, and mostly ate what i wanted for dinner and sort of figured i was doing well. my doctor put me on a high fiber diet last year and in the past few months my GF has been on a plant based / vegan friendly diet, which i have done my best to join in. (btw, its hard to get 30-40g of a fiber a day, ha). we try to have at least 60-70% of our total food intake be plants, and shoot for as much upwards from there as possible, without going cold turkey on anything. limiting dairy has been hard because i love cheese and ice cream, but i've ditched milk and creamer for soy and almond milk, and there are some decent coconut milk and cashew milk ice creams out there. what has made it easy for me is beans and lentils. i started getting Indian take out once a week and making two meals out of that, then found that there are shitloads of dal recipes out there and i can make most at home as good or better than the Indian places in town (in my opinion anyway). making some dal makhani tonight. the OP asked for recipes - I was thinking we should have a "plant based/whole food / vegetarian shit i've cooked lately" thread where folks can post their dishes, recipes, ideas, successes, etc.
  21. what is, what you get when you vote for or support any Republican, for any office?
  22. Trump is going to lose the popular vote by a larger margin than 2016 - probably much larger - and he will be re-elected in a sham. It doesn’t matter who the Democratic candidate is.
