Empire of the Summer Moon on audio book earlier this month. Fascinating stuff to me in part because my paternal grandfather was born somewhere around Evant in 1866 and the later events in the 1870's would have been a very real part of his life. He died some 20 years before I was born but being only a single generation removed I felt a very real connection and an appreciation for my own dad's upbringing by a man who had lived during such times.

Not a bad book, but Comanches by T.R. Fehrenbach is better.

That Sullivan told LSU to pound sand earns him respek from me.

I'll save my digs for the OmaHogs.

Heard Sullivan didn't pass LSU's background check.  Also that the LSU folks are divided on who to hire.

Does this touch much on Austin’s Colony? I’ve recently found out that I’m part of the Old 300 and I’m trying to find as much information as I can on the line of my family. I bought a book that I thought would really go into details since it is about the family, but there wasn’t as much depth to that era as I had hoped.

Not really. I read Big Wonderful Thing and was underwhelmed. Perhaps my expectations were too high.

Never read McMurtry, but just finished Walter Benjamin at the DQ, which to me seems like a good place to start.  He certainly recommends lots of books in the essay/autobiography.  One in particular about Charles Goodnight, which McMurtry claims is the best biography of a western figure.  Am getting it from the library and will report.

Great book. The Bryan Museum has an exhibit on Goodnight I need to check out.

Well the one thing I can tell you for sure about new Orleans that the folks in the Quarter are all immune... Just kidding, but the lines at ACME are definitely back.

I thought this was an interesting place to get an idea of pricing barometer in an area that sells more oysters that anywhere else in the world. New Orleans.  What was funniest to me is that they were selling Texas Oysters from area 25, for $1.75 a pop.  Same area I got my bag from at Quality Seafood, coincidentally.   We ate like 8 dozen at Superior Seafood, and 3 dozen at Luke. The ones at Luke were overall slightly smaller, was about the only difference I could tell.  I wanted to eat regular seafood main plates so I didn't opt for any of the grilled.

I assume all the prices are slightly inflated on the raw, but thought it was a good catch all of the relative pricing of different oysters and their sauce pairings.

That’s because Galveston is closed. Think Matagorda is, too.

If my BIL wants to get a trip together for 10 guys out of Galveston what is his best bet?  Are there charters that are that big?  Or is he stuck with one of those party boat day trip set ups?

Bay fishing would require multiple boats.  He could maybe find an offshore charter that could handle 10 people.  Not sure they could all be fishing at the same time, though.

How deep is Mitchell’s these days?  I used to run out of there quite a bit in high school.  Biggest problem there is that whole side of the bay is so shallow (the whole thing is really, as you know).   It’ll never happen but I really wish they’d halt barge traffic during these once a decade events for 2-3 days.  Frustrating.

Barge traffic halting is voluntary, unfortunately. Problem with this event is that it was so cold for so long.

Looks like it was about 25% as bad as the '83 freeze.  Of course, there was probably only 5% of the people on the water as there is today in '83.   Those I know and trust that lived thru it said the bays were terribly impacted for several years, and then of course '89 happened it went back to shit right as it was coming to normal again.  A lost decade pretty much, to hear them talk.

In some areas I do not think the TPWD survey was representative of scope of the kill.  East Matagorda specifically.

In thses types of cases, blood draws will always be well after the time of driving. In this case there is a boating accident a distance from a hospital so far more delay than a traffic stop in an urban area. There will be lots of issues there. What kind of draws. Legal blood draws or medical blood draws are not the same. Time of draw. Was there both? BAC. Extrapolation factors, if known. Medical treatment prior to draw. Warrant issues, if no consent.

Article in the Victoria Advocate said he had a .21 bac.

Yes, they've been very successful with Redfish and started stocking Flounder and trout more recently. I'm not as up to speed on the Flounder and Trout efforts.

The flounder hatchery at Sea Center Texas just recently got up and running.  They are still working on getting the process down.  A good friend of mine started that project when he was at TPWD.  They've been stocking trout for years.
