  4. Went to the San Marcos River for Father's Day.  Had not been in years and took the family for their first trip.  Pop up thunderstorm caught us in no-man's land and we ended up having to pull out of the river.  We were lucky and were near a fishing cabin and we made the decision to get on the porch and wait it out.  We didn't touch anything and left it like it was.  After an hour delay we had the biggest hatch of mayflies I've ever seen.

It was a slog for the kids, partially brought on by them taking too long to get in the car which impacted our timing but there was no sign of rain in the forecast.

I'll see if I can post some pictures.

Trumps complete lock on the Republicans party was because of the Death Star of money that was Elon.

It’s not like republicans are going to find religion and oppose him in mass force, but not being able to absolutely bully moderates into voting for Medicare and Medicaid cuts or Fiscal hawks into 2.5 trillion in deficits will severely limit Trump’s lasting agenda.

Hell still get to do his executive order dictator schtick. But any lasting change via legislation will not be achieved.

Any changes will come from Congress sitting on their hands during presidential overreach and the Supremes throwing out decades of precedence.

Yes, similar to the Greg Abbott stranglehold on Tx Ledge and the private school subsidy bill.  That does not happen because it is good policy, it happens because the funding was there for a purity test and purging anyone with a spine.

Okay, I am going to split this into parts and put each part under a Spoiler so it's not super TLDR.

First part, a sort of overall review:

      Hide contents

This was a great experience overall. I felt like I moved the needle at least a bit each day toward making the world a little bit better, saw some amazing things (the Ukrainian Motherland Monument is jawdropping, IMO), met interesting people, and got in touch with my roots. I also grew quite a bit because this was the first time I’d traveled in a while to a place where I could neither communicate beyond the basics nor read the majority of the signage, given the Cyrillic script used in Ukraine, at least. Here's the monument:

If you have the opportunity to volunteer, do it! I do a fair amount of volunteering, and sometimes it seems like “well, this good stuff would have happened just the same with or without me here.” In this case, with so many able-bodied people scooped up for military roles or lost entirely because they emigrated or died, it’s all hands on deck for the rebuilding and volunteer type activities. I really felt like I was helping rather than just being a body. Here's a typical scene as part of a job where we were doing demo on an old Soviet-era hospital so it could be renovated into a mental health center for veterans.

If you don’t have the opportunity or desire to volunteer, I encourage you to donate to these two groups. The first group is called Brave to Rebuild (https://bravetorebuild.in.ua/en). Out of the two “building/rehab/demolition” type groups I worked with, they were more organized and did a much better job of leading, directing, and motivating their volunteers. Only downside is that a lot of the leadership has day jobs, so they usually just work on weekends. The second group I can recommend is called Без Дому (Without Home) (https://www.instagram.com/bez.doma.ua/?hl=en / https://www.volunteeringukraine.com/en/volunteer-opportunities/ngo-without-home). I also worked with Dobrobat and it was okay. General consensus from talking to people is that if a group makes the Volunteering Ukraine site, they’re pretty vetted and legit: https://www.volunteeringukraine.com/en.

    As for the travel:

      Hide contents

Outbound flights: Worth it to pay for the overnight lie flat seat in this case, given that I only had a hair under two weeks and wanted to minimize adjustment to the new time zone. FWIW, the new Delta One suites on their 350-900 are nice. Google them if you want a detailed Youtube review or something like that. They’re nice. After a couple hour layover in Amsterdam, I had a short KLM flight to Krakow that was uneventful. Overall, a nice experience and about as good as air travel gets. I had a couple hours to kill in Krakow, and Old Town Krakow is nice:

Outbound Trains – After killing a couple hours in Krakow, I hopped a couple hour train to Przemyśl, a Polish town about 20 minutes from the border. Once there, you go through outbound EU/Polish customs and are herded directly onto the Ukrainian overnight train by customs people and a couple armed guard types. Once the train is loaded, it goes for about 20 minutes until you are at the Polish-Ukrainian border and then they lock the doors to leave the cars and lock the doors to go between cars and then go suite-to-suite (4 bunks per “suite”). The train *to* Ukraine was pretty empty and I only had one other person in my suite on the way out, a Canadian scholar going to interview leaders of the government and military. He was cool. We shared numbers via Whatsapp and grabbed a beer in Kyiv one night. Anyway, aa gruff Ukrainian soldier then takes your passports and disappears. About a half-hour later, they give you the usual customs questions (Where you going? Why you here? Etc.) and our guy ended our interview with a scoff and a the most dismissive “Good luck” I’ve ever gotten in my life! Regardless, we had passports stamped and were cool to stay in Ukraine for up to 90 days. Here’s what the suite looked like:

Return trains: Overnight train was the same thing in reverse. This time, though, my suitemates were three Ukrainian women. One babushka that I would say was like 70, and two 50ish woman, one who was a smokeshow. Not sure what to call her. Older than a MILF but younger than a GILF. Anyway, the two younger ones hustled on two bottles of sparkling wine and a makeshift charcuterie. They invited me to join after learning I came all the way to Ukraine to volunteer. We all got a nice buzz and flirted and giggled while translating via Google Translate’s conversation feature (pretty neat, btw. Star Trek’s universal translator is basically here). Eventually, the older woman chastised us, the younger women started talking back to her, and the conductor came and yelled at all of us and told us to shut up or we were getting kicked off at the next stop. I didn’t understand shit until they explained the next morning, but I had my head on a swivel watching the animated discussions between the women and then eventually the women and the conductor. A fun evening all around, and I was ready to pass out. Same thing in reverse with respect to stopping the train at the border, and going through customs. BTW, Kyiv’s station was nice but not the Soviet-era opulence I expected:

Return flights – Here, the lie flat was super clutch on the return. I had a 6:00am flight out of Krakow on Friday, so I decided to just stay out all night on the night before I left in order to reacclimate to my home time zone. Thanks to meeting the Bulgarian chick, who took me to a couple really cool clubs, it was easy to stay up, head back to the apartment for one last shower, and catch a cab to the airport. Once I got to the airport, though, I was dog tired. I slept about an hour on my Krakow-Amsterdam flight, rented a sleep pod in the KLM lounge at AMS for 2 hours, and then slept 4 hours on the plane, which gave me about 7 hours that roughly aligned with my home time zone. That’s a win by any measure, especially following a good night out. Here's my drunk ass saying goodbye:

The problem with having career officials from the embassy or department present is that then somewhere an official record will be created. That is what this is about.

This happened during Trump's first term Trump spoke to Putin at the White House and then he learned his lesson with the Ukraine blackmail call being documented that led to an impeachment.

Then you'll love this.  I've read several times that the flag went up but they did not capture it on movie film but the people sending back clips to run in the news reels identified the photo taken as the perfect war bonds sales ad or something like that.  They staged a reenactment that was filmed but the original guys that put up the flag had moved on so they rounded up a few guys that arrived later to do the photo shoot.
