next year versus UCONN in Austin should provide a good coaching barometer/comparison since both Hurley and Terry will be retooling most of their rosters.

I think we all know how that will measure out.

got to get to that second contract as early as possible.

JFC, man. This does not apply to QBs at all. Good QBs regularly play into the late thirties these days, so rushing to the second contract doesn’t matter.

If anything, it’s the opposite for QBs. They get rushed into playing in the NFL, so having an extra year of playing and developing in college helps them be ready to succeed and maximize their earnings.

I wouldn't lump Nix in with those guys based on their ratings. Their "tiers" seem to be:

    Caleb Williams

    Daniels/Maye/Penix

    McCarthy/Nix

    Everyone else.

Unless these are your personal rankings, swap Pinex and McCarthy. McCarthy is largely expected to go top 10. Penix is end of 1st/early 2nd.

And yet people are going fucking nuts about Malik Nabors being a top 10 pick. The two LSU WRs in this draft class might be as overrated as anyone. They averaged weak separation, played in a down SEC, and they had a wildman at QB dropping dimes and running around until he could throw them open. Nabors being ranked on par with Odunze and Harrison Jr is as laughable as someone not wanting to take a fucking Superman at TE because other, unrelated guys in the past didn't pan out in the same draft area.

And really, the "low historical hit rate in the top ten for the position" is such a weird premise in the first place. Hockenson and Pitts have had shit heaped onto them from different places but Hockenson is putting together an excellent career even if he isn't trending towards the HoF. Pitts got Johnsoned as bad as anyone on the Atlanta roster. His first season, before the idiot decided to fuck with him as some sort of decoy half the time, was terrific outside of the lack of TDs. Anything further back than 2018 is not a data point. Things change.

Even if you zoom out to the whole first round, the hit rate for TE in the first round isn’t good relative to other positions. TE is also the position most closely correlated with an elite RAS score, like top 10 percentile and up. Bowers is small for the position, so he would’ve had to test off the charts to get near that number, and there’s probably a reason why he never tested for teams, even at his pro day.

So I can see why teams in the top 10 have some pause. Having said all that, I would still take him top 10 and it may happen. I think he’ll go somewhere between 7 and 13.

Well, shit. Our questionable secondary did not need to lose a starter.

I mean, he was a huge part of why our secondary is questionable. He’s blown more coverages than anyone since he got here and doesn’t appear to have the mental ability/eyes to play Quarters. He was routinely blowing coverages on Quarters-beaters that require a DB to stay disciplined in their reads.

He also wasn’t a guaranteed starter next year, so it hurts depth, but it’s not the end of the world, especially when you take into account opportunity cost of NIL money and a possible transfer addition between now and the Fall.

That reads like it’s not a 2024 transfer leaving Holmes as the only possibility, no? Add in 2024 and you’ve got Golden or Mukuba maybe.

I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the WRs left.  Between Wingo, Cook, and all the transfers, somebody will get squeezed out of playing time, and it ain’t gonna be Wingo or Cook.

I’ll be curious to see what happens. I don’t feel Arch is who’s gonna affect this class’s QB.  In reality, Arch will be our starter for the 2025 season (and for some of this year when Quinn has his inevitable few games) and then he’ll be out (if it all plays out the best way it can).  I think this QB will come down to how Sark sees Owens.  He looked great in his minutes during the spring game and I think the dude is gonna be a gamer.  Will KJ stick and come battle with Owens for that spot? Or go somewhere he’ll have a clear path?

Ehhh. The Mannings have been extremely patient with Arch, and I expect that will continue with his NFL decision. It’s far from a given Arch leaves after one year of starting, and Lacey seems to be aware of that.

I don't think five in the first round is a lock

Yeah, I would guess the O/U for QBs in round 1 is 4.5. 4 seems like a lock, but Penix and Nix are both questionable to go round 1. Basically a toss up of whether a team tries to sneak into the end of the first or just wait until Day 2.

I had been hearing good things about him, but I guess I can't believe everything I hear from the 9.95ers. That is shocking.

Why is it shocking? He came in super raw, and he’s only in his second year. Guys like him take time, and he has a bunch of 4th year guys ahead of him.

If Sydir Mitchell is in the two-deep now that’s news to me.

He wouldn’t be if Broughton was at practice. He’s also one of two true NTs on the roster, so that probably has something to do with it. He’s likely going to get pushed down when we add another guy who can play NT in the coming weeks.

To this point, yesterday I was thinking about how the current DT group could compare to recent years. Sure they won't match last year, but could they match the 2022 rotation of Coburn/Ojomo and younger Sweat/Murphy? I think so. And I think that would be perfectly adequate.

ETA this is counting on someone like Bill Norton joining and being an acceptable nose.

I would take the 2022 DT room over this year (as of right now), but they’re in the ballpark. My biggest concern is that both Collins and Broughton are guys who have flashed and made an impact at times, but they’re inconsistent. I don’t love the idea of them starting next to each other, as both have been iffy against the run at times. Savea is very solid against the run so maybe he becomes a running mate with one of them to solidify that. I assume our top 4 DTs will get a similar amount of snaps, so who’s technically starting isn’t all that important.

For context, our 2022 team only gave up 3.5 yds per carry, which was 15th in the country. Last year, we jumped to 2.9 and 5th in the country.

pretty much everyone who watched both of those teams knows 2008 was a better team. The 2009 team did more but lost a number of key players from 2008 on both sides of the ball. However, this year's secondary may make up for losing the DTs and we are able to use the portal to bandaid losing guys. Still, it seems like last year's team felt more complete earlier at every position (aside from safety). This probably also has something to do with my personal beliefs that WR, OL, and DL are - if not the - some of the most important positions in CFB. I'm thinking Gbenda and Hill can step into Ford's spot, but you never know what you have until it is gone.

I’m not sure what you’re talking about really. No way Safety is the only spot.

DE is way more complete with Trey Moore in the fold. He’s a big upgrade over what we had last year, plus we return Burke and Sorrell and have Simmons ready to play a specialty role.

This team is also more complete at OL this year. Yes, we have to replace Jones, but Hayden fucking Conner started all last year. Improving at RG and returning 3 starters with more depth is much more complete.

Same for CB. We have to replace Watts, but Watts was a very limited CB. Muhammad will be much improved and ready to break out this year with Brooks another year older on the other side and Holmes as a quality backup for both spots. We also have Guilbeau behind Barron and elite freshmen  like Mack and Black.

I’d also say we’re better at QB. Quinn will be in Year 3 of the system, which makes a big difference, and I’d take 2nd year Arch over 2nd year Murphy at backup.

Regarding their current outlook for starting OL, it's really, really grim over there. Holy shit, from Tarp:

I've provided some thoughts on Texas A&M's offensive tackles but focused primarily on them as players. Now, here are some takes on the offensive line this spring as a whole (the following is solely a product of my thought process).

    1. You're going to have at least five starting caliber guys for the five spots up front. Your questions are more about who's going to play as opposed to can so and so be an adequate player at a particular position.

    2. A lineup of Trey Zuhn (left side) and Dametrious Crownover (right side) at tackle, Chase Bisontis and Armaj Reed-Adams at guard, and Mark Nabou at center makes a lot of sense for multiple reasons going into the spring game (this isn't necessarily a projection for the season opener…we've got a long way to go before then).

    3. Zuhn is experienced and has a nice kick step to stay with people on the edge. He's got to deal with people getting their hands into his chest but he's gradually improved that aspect of his game as he's gotten bigger and more experienced. Crownover offers a lot of potential and is probably the best pure athlete up front. He has dominant reps when everything works for him and that's something that everyone seems to be attracted to. However, he has to reduce the problematic reps and individual games, particularly in terms of his usage rate.

    4. Bisontis is a big guy with a quick first step. He looks good on initial contact and his legs keep churning to sustain his advantage. Playing between people and getting help in pass pro will enable him to avoid the "play in space with no help" scenarios he faced far too often in 2023 as a converted guard on the edge (and he was a true freshman to boot). Reed-Adams is a massive guy and he's got quite a few starts under his belt. The trick for him will be dealing with quicker players on the interior since (like Bisontis) you're not going to run over him in pass pro.

    5. Nabou is solid on the inside as the pivot man. He doesn't seem to struggle with snaps, and he can be very physical. He is another guy that you're not going to run over. The trick for him will be getting off of the ball, keeping his feet moving, and getting his hand placement going.

    6. Beyond what I think would be the first five, there's still generally a lot of people trying to reconcile themselves to a new campus or offensive scheme, gaining experience as youngsters, in track, or dealing with injuries (either from the spring or last season).

    7. I think that Reuben Fatheree is an exception to all of the above, I like him just fine, and I could be wrong, but we'll see.

    ----

To translate, they have Crownover and Bisontis starting and neither guy has any film that can be viewed positively. They have a guy at C that was trampled repeatedly last season. Reuben Fatheree is their offensive line's MacGuffin.

The part that cracks me up about all of this is I’ve seen a lot of national media lazily approve of the Colin Klein hire without giving it much more thought.  Klein took over a top 20 offense under a HC with a clearly-defined offensive scheme that he continued to run while adding in some more QB run game.

He didn’t improve the offense; he merely kept it going at top-20ish for 2 more years, while inheriting a top 10-15 OL room in the country full of 4th and 5th year guys.

Now, he has a total mess at OL that is not going to be able to win with the power run game, and a QB made of glass that he can’t default to running if he wants to make it past game 3 of the season. Klein could end up being a good OC, but he’s a big question at this point. This season is going to make him adapt in ways he’s never had to before, who knows if it will work out. Or he could choose not to adapt, like most college coaches, and fail miserably. Either way, I’m looking forward to it.

Honestly though, are we cautioned at all that we’re getting D1-AA players or are they really good!??

JFC, man. We have like 3 or 4 guys returning on next year’s roster. Not every transfer you get is going to be a star. These are extremely good pieces to add to a top 25 college roster.

Will Buxton (i know) said something recently on a podcast that made sense to me which was why drop Antonelli in Williams for example to learn F1, the team, etc only to drop him into the MB seat in another year where he has to learn the team, etc a second time. if you are bailing on 25 (and at this point they are closer to last than they are the WDC) why not just take the leap?

Because Antonelli’s nowhere near ready, and having him be absolutely murdered by his teammate probably won’t be all that helpful for his development. Leclerc had one of the best rookie seasons in recent memory, scoring 39 points in the 2nd or 3rd slowest car. He won F3 and F2 going into F1 and it took him about 2/3 of the season to adjust. He scored 13 points in 14 races, and then scored 26 points over his final 7 races.

If you put Antonelli in a Merc and he takes that long or likely longer to adjust, then he could be losing to George by over 100-150 points and things could be pretty rough for him.

Two backs drafted in early rounds last year and another one this cycle (maybe two is Robinson is snagged at the end of the 7th or something). It's clearly up in the air in terms what Blue does this next season, but I think it is credible to argue that his measurables will play pretty at the combine/pro day. It would be kind of kickass to see a back moving on to the NFL after each season for a while. Seems like Bama pumped out a back from their factory every season for a decade, but I'm sure there was a cycle or two where they missed. Still, we're walking in some high cotton with the roster right now.

To add some context to the work Sark’s done with the roster, from 2012-2020 we had 9 guys drafted in the first 3 rounds. Sark hasn’t even had a single one of his full recruiting classes on campus for 3 years and he’s about to have 5 guys drafted in the first 3 rounds this year.

Wasnt one of Bo's gripes was he wanted to coach the whole line. And his way?

Idk if that ever happened. But kinda funny the new guy gets the whole line for at least pass rush.

I think his primary gripe was about his guys having to occupy blockers instead of attacking, and we already changed that the last couple years. I don’t remember him wanting to coach edge/OLB, and LSU has a dedicated edge rushers coach so that’s not part of why he left.

  19. 1 hour ago, Catdaddyhorn said:

I felt Blue should've gotten the larger share of opportunities behind Brooks last year and never understood why he didn't.  It seemed to me that Gerry Hamilton went out of his way to downplay Blue's qualities in favor of Baxter. I guess he was getting that view from his contacts on the staff because the imbalance in usage between the 2 last season never made sense to me.

Blue entered the portal last offseason and fumbled the ball when we were trying to run out the clock against Wyoming. It’s not a mystery why it took him time to earn more touches.

in fact IIRC @Hookem2147 proclaimed that fumble against Wyoming would be Blue’s last ever carry at Texas.
