Well. If Rising, Buechele and Thompson are all leaving what gives. I’m not stating a fact that’s why I say “if”.  Therefor I’m not making shit up. This doesn’t look good going from the healthiest QB room in maybe ever to this. Whose responsibility is this then?

Herman has three experienced quarterbacks at his disposal at Ohio State. Shouldn’t we be able to keep one? Thompson states that playing time isn’t the problem... just posing questions. Lighten up people.

Keeping Casey Thompson on board may be the largest remaining recruitment for 2019 left.  Sticks and stones mother fuckers. Sticks and stones.

You've got to change with the times, or progress will fly right by. I don't think Texas lands Demas, but I also don't think they're being naive at all in their pursuit of him. There are several guys in this upcoming class that are program vaulters if you land them, and whoever lands them will be doing so because they're current in their recruiting practices. Texas is going to be current in this cycle.

@Walden Ponderer might want to consider his health before clicking on non-2019 recruiting threads going forward. I know he's an old hippie and he don't know what to do, should he hang on to the old? should he grab on to the new? His call, but he may want to up the dope-smoking if that's part of hippie-ness.

Good to hear. I’m all for modern recruiting practices, I’ve just yet to see it from the staff up to and including a certain OT in the 2019 class who has the same handler as Demas.

if this staff does modernize, it will almost certainly portend a top 5 class in 2020.

Well, I guess that's good news. This kid and Evans are going to be a goddamn circus for the next 11 months.

I wouldn’t pay much attention to Demas. He’s got a handler—I mean kind-hearted individual sacrificing his time and resources to provide for a better future for young Demond—and is up for auction. We don’t do well in those recruitments.

That core muscle tear was Nick's only injury over his entire college career, no? Just because his brother is injury prone doesn't mean he will be too lol

It’s not just injuries. Joey held out for a long time and missed significant playing time and Nick bailed on basically his entire last season at tOSU. They’re not exactly guys who put it all on the line for their team.

And you said the same thing about manziel I’m sure...

Lulz. Nah. Manziel wasn’t nearly as good of a passer and I never thought he’d pan out.

Look, I don’t like Kyler anymore than y’all do but he has legitimate NFL passing skill, and he produced at the highest level of CFB. I’m not saying he’ll for sure work out in the NFL, but it makes way more sense to go for a high ceiling guy like him than draft guys with measurables that have never been that good at football like the dues I listed earlier, or also Lock and Herbert (before he decided to return) who were mentioned as potential top 10 picks at times in the last year.

You really are a jellyfish when it comes to Stanford. It feels like you insert them into the conversation about OLs at every turn.

Shaw did a great job transitioning the program after Harbaugh. They had a great 7-8ish year run. Now Shaw's staff has degraded on him a bit. I don't see them as a perennial Top 15 program, and if they slip and fall back into the abyss, mediocrity is their historical norm and there isn't a "football is fundamental to the university" culture there. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few years and how often we hear about Stanford in the next few classes, outside of handwringing from you, sarvanaash and a few others.

If Texas felt they absolutely had to have Majors, there's a good shot he'd be a commitment right now. It will be interesting to see if they push. Numbers are already shifting on the staff for 2020. Sounds like they didn't expect to lose both QBs and they may not be enamored with their late 2019 options beyond another dude or two. Grad transfer market looks really good for Texas on filling some gaps for 2019 too.

Majors is an interesting prospect. He has great flexibility all the way through his lower body and uses that to explode through blocks with his hips instead of standing straight up. He’s got good not great feet.

To me, the real question is his size. He’s listed at 6’4, 280 lbs. but he looks smaller than that. My guess is if the staff slowplays him some it’s because he’s smaller than listed, so he’s not quite as much of a priority and they think they can find higher ceiling guys as the process goes on.

That all may be true, yet QBs still get hurt all the fucking time.  Ask Alex Smith.  Ask Colt.  Ask Cam Newton.  Ask Garoppolo.

I can see some NFL teams thinking that by drafting Murray they'd be getting the next Mahomes.  Problem is, Mahomes is a gamer who isn't afraid of contact, has a much bigger arm, and isn't an effeminate bitch made out of paper.  Oh, and he can also see over his offensive line.

I won't ever underestimate the stupidity of the NFL, but if they have any common sense he's no better than late 2nd round.  And that's pushing it.  Especially considering he hasn't even proven he's all in on football.  You're going to blow a top round pick on this guy just hoping he doesn't decide to bail to baseball?

I agree on the baseball issue. If I’m an NFL team, how do I trust Kyler will stock with football when he told the A’s the same thing last year?

But from a skill standpoint, I think he’ll be a first rounder. He’s got a great arm, extremely accurate, and he runs a 4.4. He was effective avoiding contact this year and if he gets with a team that has a modern, spread offense, I think he’ll have success. He’ll have a lot of quick throws and movement to mitigate his height issue.

I’d rather take a chance on someone like him than all the teams that have drafted guys in the 1st who weren’t even all that good in college but had good measurables like Bortles, Gabbert, Locker, Ponder, and EJ Manuel.

  9. SIAP. All of our recruits had some good flash plays, besides Watson who was hurt and people raced about him in practice.

Roschon may not test crazy well, but he’s an explosive and dynamic runner for sure.

Gbenda showed some really good acceleration. I think he’s a perfect Big 12 ILB.

  10. We have one OL from the 2016 classwho will be around in 2020 (Okafor, not counting hudson until he shows he can stay healthy)

We took 2 OL in 2017, 4 in 2018, and will take 2-3 HS OL in 2019.

That leaves us with 10-11 OL in 2020 besides freshmen. We need to load the fuck up on OL in 2020. I think it needs to be a class of at least 5 and we should try to hit 6 if the quality is there.

We need to get 4-5 of Lindbergh, Parr, Majors, Garth, and George and then see who pops up late in the cycle.

This class is going to be about the lines. We need to take 4-5 on the DL and 5-6 on the OL and they need to be blue chippers. Time for that Sugar Bowl win to start paying dividends.

The OU midget going in the first round is ridiculous, how many 5'8 180 pound QB's are there in the NFL?

Offenses are changing and rules to protect the QB have never been stronger. Looking backwards for a comp isn’t a very good method to assess his chances of success.

I’m struggling to figure out whether the transfer portal is a net positive or a net negative for the blue bloods of the sport. I think it’s net negative.

It’ll be a net positive for blue bloods just like HS recruiting and grad transfers already are.  Once coaches like Herman adjust to it, probably by next offseason. Guys who blow up at smaller schools will want to come here. We’ll lose some guys cuz of it, but as long as Herman utilizes that avenue, we’ll come out positive on talent acquisition.

Is there a difference between admissions standards for recruits out of high school and normal (non-graduate) transfers?

No. Unless they’re trying to get into McCombs or a couple other programs. This idea that we don’t take kids based on academics is dumb.

As stated above I think he had a couple bad games against Westlaks and North Shore but both of those teams had great defenses this year. He also had several games where he lit it up, I’m interested to see how he does on the camp scene this spring and summer.

I’m still unsure what to think of Card at this point, but Lake Travis’ OL was significantly worse this year than usual, so they really got eaten up by good defenses and didn’t give Card much of a chance.

I’ve never seen him written about as anything other than Saban’s ace recruiter/bagman. Is there someone in that Cleveland FO/coaching staff that knows different?

Would make more sense if he was wanted by Gregg Williams with the Jets. At least then Tosh could continue his role of overseeing illegal payments.

While I agree with the general premise you're attempting to put forth here, I will raise you Taylor Hamm, Billy Liucci, and Geoff Ketchum. James Hale, those Baylor cum stains from Sic 'Em 365 who think that rape is well within the purview of a football player, etc...

JFC. Seeing all those names together  makes you realize how truly terrible $9.95ers are.

What a weird last couple of pages this has been.

Is everyone in agreement that Shaka sucks, and we're all just debating how badly he sucks?  Or are people still defending him and thinking he shouldn't be fired at the end of this year?[1]

[1] Whether Shaka will be fired is obviously dependent on a number of factors, including money and other potential candidates.  But whether he will be fired and whether he should be fired are two different things, only the latter of which is relevant to this thread and discussion.

Fozzz is clearly attempting to defend Shaka.

I never said it was only due to luck, but that no one has provided any evidence as to some portion of under/over performing expected winning% being attributable to a particular skill.  If it has then what sample is required for that skill to "stabilize"?

I also never said that W-L is not performance.  I said they are not the best for obvious reasons.  Particularly, they aren't adjusted for quality of opponent and they are subject to things that are out of the team's control (turnover luck, for instance), and thus, comparing S&P+ rating with KenPom rating would be a better comparison.

It's funny how I am the one who is either trolling or in over his head when you are the one misstating my claims.

Your actual quote. “Texas has performed better this season relative to its peers than our football team this year.”

im not twisting your words. You made this asinine comment. Advanced stats are not inherently flawless. Their rankings do not dictate actual performance.

The Footbalk team performed exponentially better than our basketball team this year.
