If you had to bet 5K of your own money, yes or no, is PK employed by Texas this time next year?

I’d say yes. Texas wins 9 games this year and it will be hard to fire your DC after a 4 game improvement. I also think GP doesn’t want to be the DC. He is enjoying the ability to be around the game but with no pressure. This year is about learning Offense from Sark as much as it is helping tie up the secondary to the front end for the defense. GP wants another head coaching job.

(After watching Watts in the spring, former Longhorn and Pro Bowl safety Michael Griffin said on The Flagship Podcast, “Watts is a safety. You can line him up and call him a boundary corner. But he’s a safety.”)

That has been my worry. They are playing the best CB (Barron) at Nickel and mayeb the best fit at Nickel at CB

I feel the exact same. To go further I wish we played Watts at safety and Crawford at corner.

But the coaches want the best corner in the slot cause that’s where a lot of teams try to attack with their quickest WR. Watts at corner is because PK likes corners with length to play his version of cover 3. Also why Guilbeau was pushing Jamison so much in the spring. They want corners with length.

I already have a gold football. It's attached to a key ring, so we're good there. I might have set the bar a bit high saying that I'd set myself on fire. Normally when I make commitments like that it is set someone else on fire, like Derek Warehime or Drew Mehringer. If you can get either of them to the spring game, I am content with offering to douse them in lighter fluid and sling

Ol Drew is up in the PNW so it might be a little easier to get Derek in town to be set on fire. Tho there is going to be a lot of disappointed Surly members who were looking forward to your personal bonfire.

Just make sure you put your card that is on file for the drinks in a safe place before you start the fire, whether it’s you or Tom’s whole initial staff that is getting the burn.

I don't remember a Blue bet. Who did I make it with and for what amount?

No amount. You promised your Surly family you would shit out a solid gold football and set yourself on fire if Blue is still on the team Spring Game 2023.

We are headed to an recession so just trying to get that gold football versus having to invest my own money in the gold market.

I will throw a fucking party if Steve Sarklostagain pulls off 8 wins this season. That's the height of my fantasies. I just don't think the dude is a head coach.  If they exceed 8-4, drinks are on me for an hour at whatever spring game happy hour @immamac wants to set up.

If Texas wins 9 games and Blue is still on the team, next spring game is going to be epic.

Nahlin's full post on UT's '23 WR class:

Just to get it off my chest I won’t be in love with a Cook, Hale, Niblett, Wilson class.

Cook will be very good but concerns on hands have merit.

Niblett is as raw as any WR I’ve ever seen ranked that high. I see a corner when I watch his tape.

Hale’s ability to separate is a concern. He might be Theo Wease. I like him and would take him but he isn’t a no-doubter.

    I like Wilson.

I wish Pettaway was in the class because he adds floor and ceiling. I feel the same about MH-P from a Whittington standpoint.

    IT poster reply:

So if in the Fall we’re sitting at Hale , Niblett , Cook , and Wilson with a lot of big names off the board is there a few guys you’d fill with the 5th spot? Assuming no MHP

    Nahlin's reply:

I’d be more tempted to find a portal guy. Texas should have proof of concept every way it would matter to a WR.

I personally would have had Wilson or Hale as takes, but not both, and would have considered Niblett more in the ATH category that MH-P was figured into for a while.

I urge everyone to watch Niblett then MH-P before responding.

Recruiting has gone very well for Texas and they have a chance to lock up the majority of the class before game one. In that situation there is not a lot of drama to drive site views and interactions. He just trying to stir up something.

Bledsoe and Ross both are lighter than I thought they would be. I figured both would come in around 285-290. Ethan Burke already at 235 is gruntling. Brennan Thompson listed at 162 is surprising to me as well. He looks thicker than that from his track videos. Agbo at 6'6'' 337 is a nice surprise, I didnt think he was that tall.

Agbo’s numbers surprised me as well. I just hope he has patience. I expect Williams and Banks to be ahead of him in his class at tackle. Hopefully he doesn’t mind redshirting and providing depth as career starts.

Ross is smaller than I expected but IT also has reported that he is the best athlete out of the inside guys and may be able to move around some to find snaps.

If Tapp and Finkley pan out as real players I’ll be happy as hell with the defensive class.

  8. Surprised in the weights for some of the freshmen DBs. That’s a big group but I expected Guilbeau to be listed as bigger than some of those other guys weight wise.

Majors at 315 gives me some hope.

If Tapp can keep that weight through fall camp he will be playing more than expected.

If we ever get Big Cam down to 360 he is going to demolish people on the right side of that line.

I thought it was all but confirmed that Traylor didn't like Herman but wanted to stay or the AD wanted Traylor to stay?

Herman just wanted to bring in all his guys. Didn't they have an "interview" ?

He wanted to stay and would have stayed if offered the opportunity. His dislike for Herman grew out of how Herman handled his “interview” and come in talking reckless to everybody associated with the program.

  10. Patterson has told multiple people in the coaching world that he was brought on to do two specific things.

    1. Scout opponents defense

    2. Scout our current defense and help Gideon and Joseph better merge the secondary with the front 6/7.

They were duly aware that the front and back end didn’t mesh well. That hurt the team last year. At Washington Lake handled the DBs and understood what PK was trying to do. Patterson spends his time with Gideon and the secondary players. Focused on the backend during spring practice and added some coverages. I doubt we play the two high much and that’s the only thing that makes me have some hope. Still don’t think we are very athletic on the backend.

I’d disagree, Watts is thin, unlike Crawford who had the frame and physicality  to come down and feel the holes. . Plus he’s still able to cover the inside slot unlike Foster . .

We keep hearing that our coaches want more man coverage. Watts can press with his length but I don’t believe he has make up speed. Crawford does. Honestly I wanted Crawford and Barron to get the reps last year at corner.

watts has a huge frame so him lurking over the middle from safety would be nice.

Bama also hired DuBose, Franchione, Price (does he even count?), and Shula.

An upgraded roster will be nice. Incidentally, why didn't "the purge" begin last spring? Now we gotta hope Sark doesn't need to make any halftime/2nd half adjustments in close games.

    Kkk I’llo pm

  13. The Kool Aid strong. I’m going to need them to add a little water, it’s June. At this rate Texas will be better than an NFL team by the time the late July reports come in.

I do like the news about big Cam tho. His expectations based on talks with the staff have always been you’re a tackle 100%. Now it’s up to him to get and keep the weight down.

  14. I get making the move to the 3-3-5 Stack out of necessity, but I’d honestly prefer PK run the scheme he knows. Year 1 was a wash and we need to learn will his system work at Texas and how well can he teach it. Him running another scheme will give the staff another excuse to not can him if our defense is below standard again.
